Maric was a member of Teryndal's Assembly and an advisor to Xarion. A water mage, he became the wielder of his best friend Renneth's lava shard. He died when Myrelia's essence bomb detonated after he took her underground. Nero later recovered his Malverand heart.

Appearance

Maric had long brown hair, which he kept neatly arranged and sometimes tied in a ponytail. After his pact with Renneth, his hair developed red streaks. He wore navy robes during his journey with Xarion.

Personality

Maric often teased Renneth, answering his complaints with jokes and offers of affection. He reassured Xarion when the high arbiter blamed himself for the deaths caused by the confrontation with Soltheris. Administration was his greatest strength, and he kept careful records while organizing the Assembly's work. He remained calm while investigating Rahmavir and concealed his power until he could use it to negotiate his freedom.

Magic

Maric was a water mage who shaped ice boats, parted lakes, and protected travelers in bubbles beneath the water. His water magic could build dams and redirect rivers.

Renneth's lava shard greatly strengthened his water magic and gave him fire and earth magic. He raised enormous waves, froze water, heated it into steam and combined these changes with fire. He used water and fire to propel himself through the air, and shaped molten rock as well as solid earth. His terraforming could raise land from the sea or open deep shafts in the ground.

Renneth taught him to suppress his essence. Maric kept the shard hidden while posing as a foreign mercenary.

History

Teryndal and the gates

Maric served Xarion in the Assembly, working alongside Sarine. He handled permits and preparations for the Tournament of Xalmyrra, arranged the brackets and published the match lists. When Teryndal prepared to confront Soltheris, he helped organize its mages. After Eira's darkness destroyed both armies, he returned to the Xalmyrran Council with Xarion and supported him through his guilt.

Maric later accompanied Xarion to Lythenmere Lake. He parted the water and helped Xarion reach a town in a cavern beneath it, beside the base of Nythenfall Apex. They found a gate there and escorted Ilyra back through the lake in Maric's water bubble.

Xarion and Aldar sent Maric and Renneth to investigate the passage near Varentis. Guided by Rhalyn, they traveled in an ice boat Maric shaped and steered. The group encountered shapers near the passage and returned with Krexyn, whom Maric and Renneth were assigned to guard.

While traveling to Deylin's village, the water frog Spin chose Maric as her companion. Renneth took Gin, and the two mages brought the frogs back to Irrathis. They also met Thalena at the house and agreed to keep her presence secret. When Velundra came under attack, Maric went with Renneth and Ilyra to its defense.

The northern mission

Aldar sent Maric and Renneth north through Erenmyr to seek relations with other nations. Gin and Spin accompanied them on the voyage across the northern ocean. They reached Hanamizu in Shanari, where Maric helped present their diplomatic mission to Arashiiwa.

After Nerissa appeared to Maric during the night, the two men followed her trail across the sea. They reached her moving island and passed through its gate to Pelagos. Maric explained Aldar's mission to the local consulate, and the travelers continued to Pelagia, where Lucilla hosted them.

Maric chose to travel with Nero to investigate Rahmavir. Before their departure, he accepted a pact with Renneth, whose divine power had returned. The lava shard formed in his palm, strengthening his water magic and giving him fire and earth magic. On their voyage, he trained with Nero and learned to raise land from the ocean.

Rahmavir

Maric and Nero entered Halvarim disguised as mercenaries from Serekhai. They investigated its origin school and discovered magic that used no essence. Raphael sought an alliance with Nerissa, but Maric refused to fight his own people.

Zorath and Ravira took them to Zarephon, where they were required to remain until they could attempt to seal the source. Severin trained Maric to use his magic in the city's dense essence.

Alice asked Maric to arrange a dive with Nero and told him that Gabriel was beneath the lake. When Raphael descended into the water, Maric encased the lake in stone and threatened to keep him trapped. He used this to negotiate an agreement with Eliona and Azarion allowing the visitors to leave. He then removed the encasement. Nero and Alice made their own dive while Raphael was recovering.

Maric eventually left Zarephon, while Nero remained. Near Qarezh Ereshval, he reunited with Gin and Spin, who had become astragons. They took him toward Rimvold, where Gabriel was attacking Virel's forces. Maric broke through the god's snowstorm with water and fire, fought him with the lava shard and drove him away. Maric collapsed afterward, and Virel carried him away.

The war in Ulzathir

Maric recovered aboard Haverloch's skyship Axanaxa and joined the forces fighting Ulzathir. He fought Azarion near Cyndarel and took shelter in a fissure when the hurricane approached. Gin later carried him and the surviving mages to Kaldaryn, where he helped Garrik seal the underground city beneath the earth.

During the later battle at Ishtanûr, Maric traveled ahead of the skyships, clearing a path through the storm. He fought beside Jin Leiyun and Garrik, attacking Azarion's armada and confronting Eliona.

After Azarion surrendered, Myrelia's body began releasing the essence stored in Gabriel's crystal. Garrik prepared to take her underground, but Maric stopped him because Kaldaryn needed its leader. He asked Eira to tell Xarion and began carving a shaft beneath the princess.

During his descent, Maric asked Eliona to look after Gin and Spin. She gave him her own Malverand heart, which they implanted in his chest before he took himself and Myrelia farther underground. The explosion destroyed his body. Nero later searched for him and brought his heart to the Valrindor Council. Thalena took it to Chronasis for Jareth and Cyrena to examine.

Relationships

  • Xarion: Maric served as his advisor and handled much of the Assembly's administration. He reassured Xarion after the destruction of the armies and remained close to him during his grief and guilt.
  • Renneth: His best friend and, after their pact, his god. Maric teased him freely and hugged him when Renneth opposed his dangerous journey to Rahmavir. Their friendship helped them attune as god and wielder.
  • Spin: The water frog chose Maric and formed a mental bond with him. She accompanied him north and returned to him as an astragon. Before his death, he asked Eliona to care for her and Gin.
  • Nero: His companion and fellow water mage. They traveled and trained together while investigating Rahmavir. Nero later recovered his heart.
  • Sarine: His colleague in the Assembly and former lover.
