Ulzathir

Overview

Ulzathir is an eastern Valrindor nation long ruled by Ozaith and his lineage. Its capital is Ishtanûr, where the spiraling Council Citadel houses Ozaith's throne and the ruling council. The nation borders Haverloch, lies across the water from Thalassai, and faces the northern danger of the Plains of Eternity.

Under Ozaith, Ulzathir shelters refugees, governs through Ozaith's children and council, and sends forces toward Myrravel and the Plains of Eternity during the war over the source. After Ozaith falls from open rule, Zain seizes control from inside the Council Citadel and turns Ulzathir toward militarization, technological development, and conquest.

Geography and Travel

Ulzathir includes deserts, craggy brown rock, rivers, forests, jungles with palms, coastlines, and colder northern approaches. The Haverloch side of the border is lush with farms and forests. The nearby Ulzathir side turns dry and barren, with winding paths and a closed main road.

Under Ozaith, Ulzathir shelters displaced people crossing through Skarnheim, Haverloch, or the Navan Sea, and its western and southern regions are semi-distinct zones. Because Ulzathir's geography splits its cities and regions, Ozaith descends to address local governors directly. Zain later orders research into Haverloch-style engines and sleeker aetherships, seeks Solvarrian shield technology, and accepts Archibald's engineers for a rail system linking Ulzathir and Solvarria.

Ishtanûr stands amid desert and greener approaches near a large river leading toward the ocean. The Dahruz Desert stretches north of the capital and forms the sandship route toward Khaladun, a northern city and gateway toward the Plains of Eternity. Western Ulzathir includes Brahzûn, a vast city with ibrashi farms and wool trade.

Roads, boats, sandships, aetherships, and later military technology connect Ulzathir to surrounding powers. Its position near Thalassai puts ocean patrols and fast mage movement into Zain's planning against Thalassai, Solvarria, Pyrenis, and Haverloch.

Cities and Culture

Ulzathir architecture favors dark stone with pale-gold or golden accents. Ishtanûr has broad dark-stone streets, gilded roads, angular spires, star shrines, and the Council Citadel above the city. Brahzûn echoes the same style on a smaller scale. Khaladun combines sun-faded sandship docks with polished celestial spires.

Star shrines honor Ozaith, his throne stands in the Council Citadel, and his children and chosen wielders carry political authority. Aether magic is common enough that flying or short-burst travel draws little attention in some areas. High-ranking Ulzathir mages often wear deep black or cosmic-blue robes marked with stars, comet trails, or geometric designs.

Ulzathir also carries the burden of displaced people from across Valrindor. Ozaith orders refugees to be accepted, and by later visits to Ishtanûr the city is more crowded and strained, with refugees, poverty, and unrest.

Government

Ulzathir is governed through Ozaith's divine authority, his lineage, and a ruling council based in the Council Citadel. The council gathers Ozaith's children, wielders, senior mages, officers, and trusted officials around the throne in Ishtanûr. Regional authority is partly decentralized, with Ozaith's sons and daughters governing individual regions and maintaining local peacekeeping forces.

Nadun is Ozaith's wielder and serves among Ulzathir's leaders during the Ulzathir-Myrravel push toward the source. Aurelia, Sariel, Ishara, Anshar, and Lysander also serve on Ulzathir's council. By the time Zain takes power, Alistair Koss is the head of the council. That position has the same power as the other council seats.

After the failed Thalassai invasion, Zain returns to the Council Citadel, kills Alistair Koss on Ozaith's throne, and takes control of Ulzathir through Ozaith's authority. He keeps the image of Ozaith's authority alive and relies on Qadir, Khezriya, Ishqari, Zhulkar, and Archibald to hold the state together, maintain Solvarria's occupation, strike Pyrenis, and defend the capital during the Attack on Ishtanur.

History

During Ozaith's rule, Aurelia, Gren, and Viviana travel to Ulzathir seeking aid for Myrravel. Aurelia enters Ozaith's political world. Helena remains in Ishtanûr under Ozaith and Nadun. Ulzathir sends forces toward Myrravel and the Plains of Eternity during the war over the source. The Ulzathir-Myrravel push toward the source is warped by Sharuzh and Myrravel's betrayal, Nadun's assassination, and the failed attempt to seize the source.

Helena grows up in Ulzathir among Ozaith's children, studies in the Council Citadel, and later escapes with Sariel. Centuries later, she returns with Kira and Frederick as they destroy Malverand records. By then, Ishtanûr has grown under the pressure of refugees and unrest.

Ulzathir joins the coalition that attacks Thalassai. The invasion of Thalassai fails. Ozaith is removed from open rule, Maia/Ozaryn disappears from Ulzathir's side, and Zain uses the failed invasion to take power. He militarizes the nation, repairs fleets, orders research into essence technology and engines, and launches the Ulzathir Invasion of Solvarria with Solvarrian separatists.

Zain's Ulzathir Invasion of Solvarria and failed Attack on Pyrenis put Ulzathir on Thalassai and Haverloch's eastern front. Haverloch reinforces its border, Thalassai takes Solvarria by surprise, and Zain answers with the failed Attack on Pyrenis. During Zain's absence at Rimvold, allied forces launch the strike on Ishtanur. Zhulkar, Khezriya, Qadir, Archibald's shield technology, and Ulzathir's layered defenses hold the capital.

After Zain is driven back from Pyrenis and Raphael dies, Ulzathir leaves Rimvold open and holds Archibald's force at Lumenbury on the Haverloch border. Thalassai and Haverloch coordinate a counterattack aimed at Zain, Khauren, and Ulzathir itself. Zain survives his fight with Abraxas and returns to Ulzathir after retreating.

Locations

  • Ishtanûr, Ulzathir's capital and political center.
  • Council Citadel, the seat of Ozaith's throne and Ulzathir's council.
  • Dahruz Desert, the sandship route north from Ishtanûr.
  • Khaladun, a northern city near the route toward the Plains of Eternity.
  • Brahzûn, a western city with ibrashi farms, wool, and textile production.
  • Sharûmara, a roadside place in western Ulzathir on the main road to Brahzûn. Ibrashi-drawn carts carry wool along that road toward sandships for inland transport.
  • The Haverloch-Ulzathir border, where Haverloch patrols monitor dry Ulzathir terrain across from Haverloch farmland.
