City and source site
Zarephon is the city of the Oracles of Eternity deep within the Plains of Eternity. The River of Eternity runs through the city, and the central mountain cave leads to the source. It is the Oracles' capital, a prophetic sanctuary, and a source site contested by the Oracles, Rahmavir, Myrravel, Ulzathir-aligned forces, Raphael's faction, and the Order's allies.
The source beneath its mountain leaks dense essence into the world and enables the Oracles' prophecies. After Rahmavir takes the city, his faction studies Zarephon's cave writings, murals, former Oracle knowledge, and origin magic traditions. Zarephon is devastated when the mountain and cave are destroyed during the failed attempt to close the source.
Geography & Layout
Zarephon lies in an isolated valley surrounded by steep mountains, with one main approach through the plains. A heavily reinforced dark wall spans the valley entrance, with a gate and river opening leading into the city. The surrounding route passes through essence-warped forests, rolling hills, blue-green skies, frosted peaks, and eventually toward Lake Eternity, Myriandel, and roads through the plains.
The city is organized around the River of Eternity and the central mountain. Roads and wide streets run through open districts with parks, gardens, trees, and scattered vegetation. In the Oracle-side city, the river flows out from the source cave, where dense essence, small streams, and the deep underground lake mark the main access point to the source and the place where the Oracles' prophecies originate.
Travel to and from Zarephon is difficult because the Plains of Eternity disorient travelers and contain dangerous essence-rich life. Older trade and diplomatic routes once passed through the city. Later routes around the plains avoid the danger. During the war over the source, a road runs from Zarephon toward Myriandel, with rare travelers, merchants, villages, inns, and skyship approaches along the route.
Design & Architecture
Zarephon combines natural grandeur with advanced magical construction. Its buildings have silver-hued or silvery surfaces, glass, smooth exteriors, murals, vibrant artwork, towers, domes, iron or steel beams, and broad arcs. The city has open districts with parks and gardens between structures.
The central mountain cave is lit by silvery essence veins running through the walls. Finely carved walkways border the water, and the deep lake chamber is covered in inscriptions, murals, and spell-like patterns that mages outside the Oracle tradition struggle to understand. These cave writings preserve the Oracles' origin-magic knowledge until the mountain's destruction.
In the Rahmavir-controlled period, Zarephon also has a formal government complex near the black wall: a tall, angular silver structure where the chosen of Zarephon convene.
Society & Culture
Early Zarephon is a secluded town with trade relations, founding records, and rich valley resources. Some residents receive strange prophecies, and those prophetic individuals give the Oracles their name.
In Eira's early visit, residents with little essence wear dark green, gray, or black robes, and elders monitor outsiders carefully. As Zarephon grows, its population includes powerful Oracles, people born into the dense essence of the plains, and citizens familiar with the source, prophecy, and origin-magic traditions.
After Rahmavir and Raphael's faction claim the city, Zarephon remains a settlement and administrative base. Its chosen operate from the government building, skyships dock in the city, locals move through gardens and wide streets, and former Oracle knowledge is studied and absorbed by the new rulers.
Government & Power
Zarephon is the historic seat of the Oracles of Eternity, their elders, and Abraxas as the chief guardian of the source. The Oracles' duty is source guardianship: they protect the source and keep origin magic out of the hands of factions seeking to exploit it.
Control shifts during Abraxas's absence, after Rahmavir and Raphael's faction defeat the Oracles. Rahmavir secures Zarephon, integrates former Oracles into its ranks, and begins studying the source, origin magic, the murals, and the prophecies. In the Rahmavir-aligned period, Zarephon has local chosen who meet in a government building and answer to Rahmavir and Raphael's faction.

History
In an ancient period, Eira reaches Zarephon with Hrzai and a golden wisp. Moranna brings her before the Oracles' elders, and Eira is allowed to live among the community for a time. The town has trade relationships, founding records, and prophetic individuals. Eira also senses unusually thick essence leaking from the central mountain.
Eira eventually enters the guarded cave and descends into the underground lake, where liquid white essence leaks into the world through a tear in reality at the lakebed. Her contact with the rift sends messages about Barachiel and a destroyer and disrupts her magic. The same source history includes Abraxas emerging through the source and Orin existing as a wisp-copy. As the source intensifies, the Oracles become more structured, prophecies grow more disruptive, and the surrounding environment begins developing the strange traits that come to define the Plains of Eternity.
After the Oracle settlement period, Zarephon becomes the Oracles' capital and the center of the war over the source. Rahmavir and Myrravel both seek access because the plains and the source affect their futures. The Oracles refuse to hand over control. After years of the Rahmavir-Oracles war over the source, the old trade and diplomatic route through Zarephon becomes dangerous, leading to routes around the plains.
During the campaign over the source, Thamrielle reaches Zarephon while Rahmavir, Myrravel, Ulzathir-aligned forces, and the Oracles fight east and west of the city. The city is emptied on the surface. Its people hide inside buildings as she enters through the open gate. She reaches the mountain cave, descends into the lake, and retrieves a brilliant crystal from the lakebed. The object is a powerful essence core planted so the right person would take it and lead the Oracles to Thalion.
After Rahmavir and Raphael's faction take Zarephon from the Oracles, the city remains inhabited and administered through the chosen of Zarephon. Raphael's side uses the city as an administrative base, Alistair later plants strange technology in the cave, and Eliona, Azarion, Nero, Eira, Kaelion, and Xarion converge on the source closure attempt.
The failed source closure leaves Zarephon ruined. Alistair secretly plants and triggers strange objects in the cave. The resulting blast destroys the mountain, erases the cave and murals, breaks the valley wall, incinerates much of the surrounding land, momentarily disrupts the River of Eternity, and nearly liquefies the city. Some powerful survivors endure on protected platforms. The city itself is effectively destroyed.

Secrets and Mysteries
Zarephon's deepest secret is that the source beneath its mountain is a sacred power site and a breach or rift connecting to another world. Eira's ancient contact with it widens the rift. The Plains of Eternity grow stranger around the leaking source. Abraxas enters Valrindor through the breach from the other Zarephon. Alistair eventually destroys the mountain with strange technology as Eira, Kaelion, Xarion, and Ozaith attempt to close the breach.
