Rimvold is the capital of Skarnheim on Valrindor, at the foot of mountains near the Varnhallow border. Its wood-and-stone buildings rise in terraces along the slopes. A river runs outside the city and branches toward the sea.
City and defenses
Timber walls reinforced with iron surround Rimvold. Runes protect the walls and many buildings, while runic and starfield barriers reinforce the city's defenses. Stone streets lead through the market and up toward the Great Hall.
Great Hall and archive
The Great Hall is built into the mountain. Its main chamber has tall ceilings and a large window overlooking the city to the south and east. Ornate wooden panels line the corridors, and essence-lit braziers imitate burning flames.
A vault beneath the hall preserves ancient books, including histories of Valrindor and The Eleven Stories of Old. Access to the books is restricted, and Halgarr holds the key.
An ancient semicircular gate lies deep beneath the Great Hall. Sigurd knew its location but said it had gone unguarded for centuries. He agreed to guide Silas to it in exchange for help against the darkness and the approaching shapers.
History
Shaper attack
Sigurd organized Rimvold's defenders when Zharrek's shapers attacked. Svanhild led the vanguard, and Jin Leiyun and Silas fought alongside them. The city's barriers survived Zharrek's attacks.
Zharrek overloaded his essence, summoning a massive meteor as his body disintegrated. Silas and Zal'therak carried the meteor into the void, saving Rimvold.

Jin Leiyun redirected water into the broken riverbeds. The returning rivers began restoring life to the barren land around the city.

History
Astralem and Skarnheim
In 2085 AX, the city was called Astralem and had become Varnhallow's capital after Astralynne was destroyed. Thalion brought the survivors of his Order there and declared independence from the Malverand Empire. He named the city Rimvold and made it the capital of Skarnheim.
Thalion ordered stairs down to the gate and a nearby vault for valuable books and plans. Benedict became patriarch of Rimvold, and the city housed the Order of Thalion Zenith, whose skyship armada was concealed beneath it.

Rimvold's smiths make weapons exported throughout Valrindor. They also produce stronger individual commissions than the weapons sold publicly.

Ulzathir's occupation
Zain's army conquered Rimvold during Ulzathir's invasion. Runic mages and shielders fled to Jazarel and Bjarnholt, and civilians left for the surrounding plains. Zain's forces could not use the runes covering the captured buildings.
Maric, wielding Renneth, defeated Gabriel outside the city while Virel's army held against the invaders. Maric's battle with Gabriel turned the plains west of Rimvold into molten rock. He cooled the lava into thick black stone. Ulzathir's forces withdrew, and Thorik and Leif reclaimed Rimvold. Thorik worked to restore Skarnheim before returning to Stormhaven. With Sigurd gone, Leif became king of Skarnheim and governed Rimvold with Halgarr's help.
