When Jin reached Kaldaryn exhausted, Garrik healed him and urged him to rest. He gave Jin cores freely because of his friendship with Khoradyn and Zhang. Jin reported that the shapers were passing Kaldaryn toward Skarnheim. Garrik mobilized his army to pursue them while Jin flew ahead to warn Sigurd. He planned to attack the remaining shapers in Shroudvale afterward, while promising to spare innocents.

History
Founding Kaldaryn
Garrik served beside Khoradyn, Kren and Zhang when they fought the shapers. They took in Vianna after the attack that destroyed her home. When she attempted suicide, Garrik healed her. Khoradyn shaped a new city from the earth for their followers and the refugees, then offered Garrik its leadership. Garrik named it Kaldaryn.
Kaldaryn's armies worked through Linsothar and Shaoying, restoring damaged territories. Garrik extended its influence westward and established contacts with other rulers. Khoradyn left to explore Xalmyrra, while Garrik remained to govern their growing nation.
The shapers and neighboring nations
Garrik healed Jin when he first reached Kaldaryn and gave him cores because of his friendship with Khoradyn and Zhang. On Jin's report that the shapers were passing the city toward Skarnheim, Garrik mobilized an army to pursue them. Jin flew ahead, and the fighting ended before Garrik arrived. Garrik healed him again afterward.
Following the battle, Garrik traveled to Kyranthos for negotiations with Morozkaya. He signed nonaggression pacts with Skarnheim and Morozkaya.
When Virel accused Jin of attacking him, Garrik accepted that both had mistaken the other for an enemy. During the same negotiations, he rejected a proposed war with Thalassai and hoped to extend peace agreements across Valrindor.
Vianna had left Kaldaryn with her brother Julian and later returned, falsely claiming a peaceful life in Brighthaven. Garrik welcomed her rather than demand an explanation. When her account of her journey was exposed in Morozkaya, he forgave her and affirmed that he would support her. After Kren returned from Thundermarch, Garrik led another delegation to Kyranthos for negotiations.

Isaac gave him an iridescent shard containing no god, which enhanced his earth and divine magic and supplied knowledge of shields and enchantments. He teaches Eira those techniques.
History
The prince of Blackcrag
Astrid taught Garrik magic, while Ulrich taught him governance, history and philosophy. At seventeen, he accompanied them to Morindel to negotiate a defensive alliance. He authorized Astrid to trade a large basalt essence core for a crystal heart and other artifacts from Magnus. Back in Blackcrag, the heart drew essence during a council meeting and regenerated Eremion. George appointed the guardian to serve as Garrik's second when the prince became king.
George died in his sleep. Garrik suspected Eremion of assassination but had no proof. He also opposed Eremion's plans for forced enlistment and for pairing powerful mages to have children. The night before his coronation, he fled in a royal skyship. Astrid found him aboard and joined him rather than returning him to Blackcrag. Sabotage damaged the engines, forcing them to land in Shaoying.
Isaac's student
Garrik enlisted as a mercenary while seeking Tianlei and an account of history beyond Blackcrag's teachings. At Cloudrift, Shaoying's elite mages drained their own soldiers during battle. The deaths strengthened his desire to stop the wars. He sought Ren in Thundermarch, but met Isaac instead.
Garrik and Astrid traveled with Isaac and Simon. Garrik practiced negotiation and sparred with Simon, while Isaac unmade those who rejected his peace terms. At Jazarel, Garrik swore lifelong loyalty to the Order, and Astrid joined beside him. Isaac assigned him to gather an army, bring peace to Valrindor and defeat Eremion. He gave Garrik the shard and permission to recruit exceptional mages into the Order.
Kaldaryn
After decades gathering followers, Garrik joined Khoradyn, Kren and Zhang in defending Thundermarch from Shaoying. He accepted Khoradyn as commander because Khoradyn was better at winning over defeated soldiers, and served as his second.
After Malcairn warned them about the shapers, Garrik and Isaac protected Hengzhou and healed its wounded. Isaac asked him to look after Vianna. Garrik saved her after she attempted suicide and assigned Kren to watch her. Khoradyn built a new city for their followers and the refugees, then offered Garrik its leadership. Garrik named the city and nation Kaldaryn. Astrid settled there and withdrew from the armies' expeditions.
Garrik extended Kaldaryn's influence through alliances, trade and military protection. He supported Radomir's appointment as a diarch of Morozkaya and promised soldiers to protect Drozhvenya and Borovia. He welcomed Vianna back despite her false account of her journey. When Virel accused Jin of attacking him, Garrik accepted that each had mistaken the other for an enemy and signed a nonaggression pact with Morozkaya.

When the shapers moved toward Skarnheim, Garrik mobilized an army, but Jin flew ahead and the fighting ended before Garrik arrived. He healed Jin again after the battle. Later, a timerift in Kyranthos took Kren, Zhang, Ivan and Svanhild. Garrik healed those left behind and asked Virel to find his missing commanders.
Maraveth
Garrik prepared an army at Laizhou for a surprise attack on Shroudvale, then advanced toward Maraveth, where Eremion sought the Malverand vault. Eremion's skyships attacked near the central spires. Garrik protected the retreat with divine shields and fought the guardian with Kaelion's support. After Eremion withdrew, Garrik fortified the camp and rebuilt a nearby settlement.
He recruited Eira, Kaelion and Jin into the Order. He defeated Kaelion and Jin in separate practice duels. He appointed Eira loremaster to investigate records and the world's hidden history. He agreed to support Thalena's plan to connect Valrindor's cities with trains, explained by Astryx, provided Kaldaryn's mages remained at the front.

The opposing armies remained at Maraveth for three years. Thalena then defeated Eremion, whose body was destroyed, leaving his heart. Garrik advanced on Blackcrag's defenses. During the assault, he raised the ground beneath Aurion to change the aim of Aurion's burning ray. His forces took Wardenfeld.
After Isaac disappeared, Garrik announced that Isaac had instructed him to lead the Order in his absence. He abandoned its secrecy because Eremion and the Malverand gods already knew its members.

Garrik is the leader of the Kaldaryn Protectorate, a divine and earth mage, and a member of the Order of Thalion Zenith. Born to Lucilla and Nero, he was adopted as King George's heir in Blackcrag. He fled before his coronation and built Kaldaryn with Khoradyn, later leading its armies against Eremion and the Malverand guardians.
Appearance
Garrik has golden blond hair and teal eyes. He wears brown Kaldaryn robes with golden threads, and uses divine enchantments on cloth and leather armor.
Personality
Garrik opposes forced military service and recruits volunteers. He seeks peace through alliances and negotiations, but uses his armies against rulers and soldiers who resist his terms. He refused to support a proposed war against Thalassai. After the guardians' defeat, he favors letting the nations allied with Kaldaryn govern themselves and represent their own interests in the council.
Magic
Garrik uses divine magic to shield armies, heal wounds, regrow limbs and enchant clothing and weapons. His earth magic raises fortifications, cushions falls and moves enormous masses of rock.
Isaac gave him an iridescent god core that contained no god. It enhanced his divine and earth magic, sharpened his senses and supplied knowledge of shields and enchantments. Garrik later relinquished it. His own divine magic descends from his family: during the battle with Gabriel, he learned that Isaac was his grandfather and used that inherited power to unmake the god's essence.
History
Blackcrag's heir
George had outlived a previous queen and two heirs when he made a secret agreement with Lucilla. She agreed to provide an heir if Blackcrag left Thiravos and Theryssa alone and taught their engineers to build better essence engines. Lucilla bore Nero's son, and Nero delivered the child to George. George named him Garrik and announced that the queen had given birth. He appointed Astrid to teach him magic; Ulrich taught him governance, history and philosophy.
At seventeen, Garrik accompanied Astrid and Ulrich to Morindel to negotiate a defensive alliance. He authorized Astrid to trade a large basalt essence core for a crystal heart and other artifacts from Magnus. Maraveth and Eremion

Garrik protected the retreat with divine shields and fought the guardian with Kaelion's support. After Eremion withdrew, Garrik fortified the camp and rebuilt a nearby settlement.

The Malverand war
The Omberion forces' attacks with origin particles drove Garrik and Aurion back. Garrik fortified their position and repeatedly healed Aurion, but maintaining barriers against the explosions exhausted Aurion. When both were hurled toward a building, Garrik cushioned their fall with rock and healed Aurion. He carried the unconscious Aurion away, then reinforced the western cities and placed guards in the mountains to watch Morindel.
Garrik joined Aldar's armies against Raphael at Cyndarel. During their escape, he shattered Zorath's warhammer with his fist, but Zorath kicked him away from the fighting. Splin rescued him, and Astrid healed him. Garrik warned Kaldaryn about Azarion's approaching hurricane and led the earth mages in burying the city beneath protective stone. Once the worst winds passed, the city was raised again.
He later advanced into the hurricane with Jin and Maric. He protected their skyships with divine shields, then fought Ravira. When Cassian was struck down by the recoil of unmaking Gabriel, Garrik caught him. Xarion told Garrik that Isaac was his grandfather and that he shared his divine inheritance. Garrik took Cassian's golden sword and began snapping apart Gabriel's essence. He anchored Eira and Kaelion in the ground so they could continue casting against the god. Azarion completed the unmaking.
Peace and the core
After the war, Thalena and Xarion urged Garrik to concentrate on Kaldaryn rather than act for the Order, whose killings had left enemies across Valrindor. Garrik agreed that the allied nations should govern themselves and each send a representative to the council. With Astrid, he traveled to Omberion to discuss peace and affirmed that Kaldaryn was his home.
When Ravira visited the council building, Garrik gave up his core, saying he no longer needed it if the fighting ended. He severed his arm, regrew it, and burned the removed hand until only the core remained. He left it on the table, and Aelius proposed sealing it in a vault.
Thalena's account
In Thalena's Shores of Eternity, Garrik returned to Kaldaryn to rebuild rather than remain in Chronasis. An earthquake collapsed the largest mountains around the city and consumed it. Garrik overloaded during the disaster.
