Deylin Varos is a level nine temporal mage, scholar, and artifact hunter from Earth. Born David Vorrel, he crossed to Xalmyrra and lived through successive cycles under a golden mage's guidance. He is Ilyra's husband and Eira's father. Many of his discoveries are held at the Imperial Institute, and he works to protect Eira and end the cycles.
Personality
Deylin enjoys teasing people, especially when they expect a formal greeting or a serious explanation. He makes exaggerated bows and gives himself grand titles. He also withholds parts of his history, including the instructions he followed to protect Eira.
Giving Eira up to the golden mage distressed him, and he repeatedly risked his life to protect her. He enjoys exploring ruins.
Magic
Deylin combines fire spells with rapid blinking. He places small fireballs beside opponents, then blinks away before they explode. The shockwaves from his blinks throw opponents off balance. In the Irrathis tournament, he exhausted Cassian's defenses with these attacks. He also uses water and earth magic. Temporal and water shields protected him while retrieving an artifact deep beneath the Aethrendar Sea.
He crossed between Xalmyrra's cycles by holding a blink through the world's collapse. During another crossing, the young man he carried became a baby.
History
Earth
David Vorrel was a scientist on Earth and received a Nobel Prize. He studied the strange fog near his cabin by Lake Lucerne in Switzerland and developed the MANT, a molecular analyzer and neural translator, to investigate it. In 2040, his equipment registered Xytheron, 12B₆. When he connected himself to the apparatus, he was pulled through a timerift into Xalmyrra.
Xalmyrra and the cycles
David arrived in a ruined Xalmyrra, where his body began to lose substance. An old mage with golden hair stabilized him and taught him magic and the local language. After two years, David held a blink through the world's collapse and emerged in another cycle with a younger body. He adopted the name Deylin Varos.
He settled in Erenmyr and married Ilyra. Their daughter, Eira, was born there. The golden mage told them she had to grow up in Irrathis to save Xalmyrra, and they reluctantly allowed him to take her. Deylin and Ilyra watched her childhood from a distance.
At the golden mage's direction, Deylin planted books and artifacts for Eira to discover. He also pursued his own research. Retrieving an artifact from more than a thousand paces beneath the Aethrendar Sea earned him recognition at level nine. He gave the artifact to Ilyra. He later carried the Heart of Oblivion into the Land of Darkness for Eira to find.
He captained a ship on Lake Velisyth and called himself the Master of the Seven Seas. In the Erenmyr swamps, a giant cuddly frog stole the rabbit he was eating. Deylin named him Glin, and they became companions. Glin responded to his thoughts and carried him across Xalmyrra.
Before another cycle ended, the golden mage ordered Deylin to carry a young man through the collapse. The man became a baby, and the mage took him from Deylin. Deylin then married Ilyra again and repeated much of his earlier life without having another child. The golden mage appeared as Eira, maintaining her place in that cycle until her arrival from the previous one.
Protecting Eira
Deylin rescued Eira and Lirien from a corrupted bear during their council mission and later ferried them and Kaelion toward Velundra. He protected the ship from a storm with a temporal shield and used cores supplied by the passengers to avoid aging the weaker mages aboard. After Eira took the spiral shard, the golden mage arranged for Lythariel to train her by sending a message in Deylin's name. Deylin carried them toward Irrathis on Glin.
He defeated Cassian in the Irrathis tournament before losing to Draven. When the cataclysm struck, he blinked between endangered people and rescued as many as he could. He later pulled Eira out of the darkness she released at the Soltheris border and brought her home to Ilyra.
When Xol'Zahir's disciples pursued her, Deylin sent Cassian and Lythariel west with Eira while he stayed to delay the attackers.

Varnhallow and the void
At Arcanis Village, Deylin crossed Varnhallow's temporal barrier. He then synchronized it while Vianna and Anshar weakened it with heat, allowing the rest of the expedition to enter. The travelers were separated. Deylin joined Anshar, Virel, and Felix near Varnhallow's end and helped the surviving group escape by synchronizing another opening in the failing barrier.
They emerged three years after leaving and were ambushed near Arcanis Village. Deylin held the wounded Isaac in a temporal barrier while Lysander healed him.

Lunorax, Sigurd, and Silas joined them there. With Horol'Khai's guidance, the group cast through a breach to reach earlier events. Deylin and Sigurd made the timerifts that took people from the Chronasis feast and Kyranthos into the past. They could cast through the breach but could not safely leave the void themselves.
They waited near the Chronasis gate for three years. Deylin taught the others Earth games to pass the time. Their bodies gradually lost substance. Hadrian and Astryx eventually pulled the group through the gate and back to Chronasis.
He reunited with Ilyra.

He is Ilyra's husband and Eira's father. As a chronarc of Chronasis, he oversees agriculture and technological research.
Appearance
Deylin has short, graying hair. He usually wears robes and dresses lightly for his morning runs in Chronasis.
Personality
Deylin enjoys teasing people, especially when they expect a formal greeting or a serious explanation. He makes exaggerated bows, gives himself grand titles, and jokes with people far more powerful than him. He also withholds parts of his history, including the instructions he followed to protect Eira.
Giving Eira up to Xelthys distressed him, and he repeatedly risked his life to protect her. He asked Thalena to teach him how to slow his aging so he could remain with Ilyra and Eira. He enjoys farming, exploring ruins, and teaching others what he knows.
His temporal barriers can slow attacks, hold an injured person still, and protect companions crossing unstable boundaries. He crossed between Xalmyrra's cycles by holding a blink through the world's collapse. Carrying Cassian through one of these crossings reduced Cassian to a baby.
Deylin's temporal aptitude came from the spell Thalena placed around his heart at birth. He later learned her spell for slowing aging. His practical knowledge also extends to gates and communication devices, which he studies alongside the researchers in Chronasis.
History
Earth
David Vorrel was born on Earth in 1997. He was not breathing at birth, and Thalena placed a spell around his heart that kept it beating. She later taught him under several identities and encouraged his studies without disclosing who she was.
David became a professor and scientist and received a Nobel Prize. He bought Thalena's cabin near Lake Lucerne in Switzerland and studied the strange fog near it. Thalena had opened the timerift there before his birth.
He developed the MANT, a molecular analyzer and neural translator, to investigate the anomaly. Rafe secretly modified its scanner while David was away, enabling it to detect essence. In 2040, David's equipment registered Xytheron, 12B₆. When he connected himself to the apparatus, he was pulled through the timerift into Xalmyrra.
Xalmyrra and the cycles
David arrived in a ruined Xalmyrra, where his body began to lose substance. Xelthys appeared as an old mage with golden hair, stabilized him, and taught him magic and the local language. After two years, David held a blink through the world's collapse and emerged in another cycle with a younger body. He adopted the name Deylin Varos.
He settled in Erenmyr and married Ilyra. Their daughter, Eira, was born there. Xelthys told them she had to grow up in Irrathis to save Xalmyrra, and they reluctantly allowed him to take her. Deylin and Ilyra watched her childhood from a distance.
At Xelthys's direction, Deylin planted books and artifacts for Eira to discover.
Before another cycle ended, Xelthys ordered Deylin to carry Cassian through the collapse. Cassian became a baby, and Xelthys took him from Deylin. Deylin then married Ilyra again and repeated much of his earlier life without having another child. Xelthys appeared as Eira, maintaining her place in that cycle until her arrival from the previous one.
After Eira took the spiral shard, Xelthys arranged for Lythariel to train her by sending a message in Deylin's name.
He fought Jareth and Amos alongside Silas and recovered a gate activator dropped during their retreat. Silas took him into the void to follow Eira, but lost his grip on him. Deylin drifted away and emerged through the gate Cassian opened in Chronasis.
Work in Chronasis
Thalena welcomed him to Thalassai. He trained Cassian through morning runs and duels, taught the legions, and contributed knowledge used in their weapons. He worked with Cyrena on the gates and communication stones and repaired one of Thalena's communication devices.
During an experiment in the void, Thalena launched him toward a distant light on a rope. An asteroid struck him and severed the rope. The impact broke his gate activators, releasing their spells, and he escaped through a nearby gate to Earth. He spent weeks building equipment to power the gate with electricity.
Thalena found him inside a pyramid on Earth. They visited Lake Lucerne in 1901, where the timerift he had used in 2040 was absent. She taught him her spell for slowing aging and threw him toward the Irrathis gate. He reunited with Ilyra and Eira and later returned to Chronasis with Ilyra.
Cassian appointed them both chronarcs and gave them chambers in Stella Aeterna. Deylin took responsibility for agriculture and technological research. At the same feast, a timerift carried several guests away. Deylin identified it and joined the effort to find them.
He was later found exhausted with a broken leg. Thalena reached him during the attack and carried him into the void, where she healed him.
When Thalena attempted to reverse the abyss, Deylin, Sigurd, and Lunorax held the breach open while she sent out a copy of herself. Hadrian and Astryx eventually pulled the group through the gate and back to Chronasis.
Deylin resumed his work and stayed with Ilyra. Thalena later assigned him to inspect the train route to Melandor.
Thalena's account
In Thalena's Shores of Eternity, Ilyra traveled to Melandor to search for Deylin after he failed to return.
Relationships
- Ilyra: His wife and Eira's mother. He married her in two cycles, told her about Earth, and worked with her to protect their daughter. They later settled together in Stella Aeterna.
- Eira: His daughter. He placed discoveries in her path and protected her while concealing his parentage and the instructions he followed. He wanted to live long enough to remain with her and Ilyra.
- Glin: His companion and mount, whom he named in the Erenmyr swamps. Their bond allowed Glin to respond to his thoughts.
- Xelthys: His teacher and guide through the cycles. Deylin followed his plans for Eira but also pursued discoveries of his own and challenged him after the cataclysm.
- Thalena: She saved him at birth, taught him on Earth, and later welcomed him to Chronasis. They researched the gates together and were trapped in the void together. He teases her without the formality she receives from most people.
- Cassian: His friend, training partner, and archon. Deylin carried him into another cycle as a baby, later trained him in Chronasis, and accepted a chronarc position from him.
- Calythos: His friend, with whom he discusses farming. Calythos offered him a farm in Terranova.
