Overview
Pelagos is the coastal capital of Thiravos, where consuls govern sea-facing civic life and control gate and skyship travel. Renneth and Maric reach the city through an unexpected direct gate route, making Pelagos their first point of contact with Thiravos's capital government.
Cityscape
Pelagos spreads between a hilltop gate chamber and the ocean. Between the gate hill and the water, the city has marble colonnades, white buildings with earth-toned roofs, statues, an amphitheater, and an offshore lighthouse whose beam scans the waters. Skyship docks stand behind the city, and metallic skyships move above its streets and coastline.
The gate chamber is built from thick gray stone blocks and holds a raised gate platform, sequence symbols, essence lighting, and equipment used for controlled direct travel. Pelagos mirrors Pelagia: both capitals have hilltop gate chambers, consulates, streets, amphitheaters, offshore lighthouses, skyship docks, and sequence-based gate travel.
Society and Government
Pelagos is governed through Thiravos's consul system. Kalyx is the head consul and presides with five fellow consuls in the Pelagos Consulate.
Pelagos Consulate
The Pelagos Consulate is Thiravos's consular seat in Pelagos. It is a tall, layered marble building with spacious windows, an earthy dome, a spire, white stairs, guarded grand doors, pristine marble halls, polished tile floors, and a chamber where six consuls sit around a rectangular table. A statue of Pyragos stands near the courtyard approach.
Kalyx and Thiravos's consuls receive Renneth and Maric there, debate Thiravos's isolation from mainland Valrindor, and consider future contact with Xalmyrra. During the later mobilization against Xalmyrra, Kalyx returns to Pelagos to prepare Thiravos's army and skyships, and his personal vessel rises from the consulate courtyard with Brontes aboard.
The city is ocean-oriented in dress, travel, and public life. People around the gate chamber wear deep blue, sea green, and teal clothing. Gate workers keep strict records of travelers, and Brontes and Damarra receive Renneth and Maric calmly, record their account, house them in a gate-operator building, and guide them toward the consuls.
Pelagos also preserves Thiravos's worship of Nerissa and the missing god Pyragos. Pyragos brought prosperity to Thiravos after Nerissa introduced him there, and Nerissa shared ancient Malverand knowledge with the brightest minds of Thiravos and Theryssa.
History
During Renneth and Maric's visit, Brontes receives them in Thiravos's capital and introduces the region's controlled gate network. Damarra then escorts the visitors through the city to the Pelagos Consulate, where Kalyx and Thiravos's consuls receive them, discuss Thiravos's isolation from mainland Valrindor, and consider future contact with Xalmyrra.
Before Renneth and Maric leave, the Pelagos talks address older events involving Eremion's scouts, Nero's warning to Thiravos, and Pyragos's disappearance. Brontes then teaches direct gate sequences in the hilltop chamber, and Renneth activates the Pelagia sequence, opening a direct route from Pelagos to Pelagia.
After Gabriel pressures Nerissa, Theryssa, and Thiravos into action against Xalmyrra, Kalyx returns to Pelagos to prepare Thiravos's army, inform Brontes, ready the skyships, and search for Xalmyrra's gate sequences. The combined skyship force later travels along the coast to Pelagos before continuing toward Shanari, and Kalyx's personal vessel rises from the Pelagos Consulate courtyard to join the fleet.
