Varentis is a fortress city and the capital of Keldara in Xalmyrra, carved into the cliffs of the Steel Ravine. It is home to Keldara’s supreme commander, Feryon, and General Durvek.

Varentis stands in frozen mountain country. Its fortress walls are built into the mountain, with snow gathering in the stone crevices and streaks of ice running along the walls. Gray and dark stone buildings line wide, orderly streets. Banners bearing Keldara’s crimson fist hang from the towering walls and along the streets.
At the northern edge of the city, the last houses give way to rugged wilderness. Beyond them lie snowy hills, pine forests and the Keldaran mountains.

A cave in the mountains north of Varentis leads to Thundermarch. Renneth and Maric investigated the route with Rhalyn as their guide. After a group of mages emerged from the cave and attacked the expedition, Feryon called for reinforcements and proposed a road and wall near the passage.

Silas lived with Rhalyn in Varentis.
During the cataclysm, black rain and floodwaters swept through the city while nearby peaks erupted and black spikes fell from the sky. Rhalyn protected civilians with divine barriers. Silas spread a cosmic starfield over Varentis, intercepting many spikes, while Khoradyn raised defensive mountains and walls with earth and ice magic. Some projectiles penetrated the defenses, killing people and damaging buildings, but the city remained standing.

Some of the Atraxi who arrived in Xalmyrra settled in Varentis. Their language spread through trade and cultural exchange across the region, becoming Xalmyrran.
After passing through the northern cave and losing much of his memory, Belanor reached Varentis’s outskirts. Khoradyn welcomed him into the city and gave him the name Brynor; Varentis became his home.
