Astragon

bestiary

Astragons are immense, intelligent celestial beasts with luminous scales and wings. Giant cuddly frogs can evolve into this form and return to their frog shape. Astragons carry companions through the air and communicate thoughts and feelings to them.

Appearance and abilities

Their scales shine like stars, and their wings scatter glittering motes and trails of light as they fly. They have large claws and long tongues, which they can use gently to lift people onto their backs. Their deep roars retain a croaking sound.

Glin understands human speech and conveys his intentions without speaking. Kaelion, Aurion and Eira understood that he would take them to Zeydrith. He raises cosmic barriers to protect his riders from attacks and debris. Thalena taught him temporal magic, allowing him to blink between positions.

History

Thalena trained Glin in Erenmyr long before the end of Xalmyrra's cycles. Riding him as Arcanis, she stopped the War of Scars by pinning the combatants to the ground with gravity. In the final Xalmyrran cycle, Glin carried her into battle against Jorhan and protected Kaelion and Aurion with cosmic barriers. Afterward, he carried the wounded Thalena and her companions to Zeydrith.

Glin is also Deylin's companion. Thalena supported that bond and allowed him to stay with Deylin after returning to Thalassai.

Glin is also Deylin's companion. After Deylin disappeared, he traveled with Thalena. In Brondoris, he drank from the city fountain and carried a boy and his mother on a flight over the city.

Wild astragons live in the Plains of Eternity, while the frogs of Erenmyr have produced astragons that travel with mages across Valrindor.

Eira found that Splin is made almost entirely of essence enclosed in flesh.

Behavior and abilities

Astragons understand human speech and convey their intentions without speaking. They choose their companions. Wild astragons are usually intelligent and nonaggressive; those warped by the Plains' essence can become unpredictable and attack travelers. Their attacks make flight through parts of the Plains dangerous.

Their magic differs by individual. Glin raises cosmic barriers and uses temporal magic, which Thalena taught him, to blink between positions. Splin, Kaelion's companion, also has an astragon form. Some wild astragons cast ice spells that cause essence storms around Myrravel.

Origins and history

Erenmyr's companions

Thalena trained Glin in Erenmyr long before the end of Xalmyrra's cycles. Riding him as Arcanis, she stopped the War of Scars by pinning the combatants to the ground with gravity. In the final Xalmyrran cycle, Glin carried her into battle against Jorhan and protected Kaelion and Aurion with cosmic barriers. Afterward, he carried the wounded Thalena and her companions to Zeydrith.

Glin bonded with Deylin as well as Thalena. After Deylin disappeared, he traveled with Thalena. Splin carried mages during the advance against Blackcrag, shielding soldiers and ferrying the wounded to safety.

Thalena offered the opportunity to bond with an astragon among the prizes for the Celestial Games. A proposed beast-taming challenge also included astragons among the eligible creatures.

The ancient Plains

During her years in the ancient Plains, Eira encountered an astragon that understood her thoughts and allowed Orin to ride it. She asked it to protect him and take him to a peaceful home. A second astragon joined them as they flew southward.

Individual colors differ: Splin has blue scales, Gin has patches of red among his blue scales, and Spin has darker scales that appear wet. Splin and Gin catch fish with their tongues while flying over water.

Behavior and bonds

Astragons understand human speech and can convey intentions without speaking. Their companions receive images, feelings and an understanding of the astragons’ intended destinations. They also communicate with one another and can respond to a distant call for help. Glin bonded with Deylin as well as Thalena. After Deylin disappeared, he traveled with Thalena. He resisted carrying the man impersonating Aldar and conveyed his unease to Cassian.

They choose their companions. Powerful mages seek their bonds, but spending years in the Plains does not guarantee acceptance. Wild astragons are usually intelligent and nonaggressive; those warped by the Plains' essence can become unpredictable and attack travelers. Territorial astragons make flight through parts of the Plains dangerous.

Abilities and limits

Their magic differs by individual. Glin raises cosmic barriers and uses temporal magic, which Thalena taught him, to blink between positions. Splin creates starfield barriers against attacks, wind and cold, and her roars release resonance shockwaves. Gin breathes fire and casts fireballs. Some wild astragons cast ice spells that cause essence storms around Myrravel.

Their defenses can be overwhelmed. Splin was brought down while protecting Kaelion from the pursuing skyships above Kaldaryn. She reverted to her frog form with two legs missing; Eira and Astrid stopped her bleeding, and Garrik later healed her. During the hurricane in Ulzathir, Virel used his vector magic to increase her flight speed so she could carry him and Astheron away.

Afterward, he carried the wounded Thalena and her companions to Zeydrith.

Splin had evolved by the time Kaelion returned to Chronasis. Gin and Spin later evolved on their own and found Maric in Qarezh. When Myrelia's body detonated, three astragons carried escaping mages through the blast. Garrik and Eira healed them as the heat and shockwave struck. Glin, Splin, Gin and Spin remain companions of Thalena and her allies.
