Thorik carried her on his axe to Arcanis Village, where she raised barriers against Azarion and Eliona. When Raphael's ice threatened her, Aldar and Virel helped repel it. She caught the exhausted Aldar and held him while Thorik carried them away.

By the retreat from Arcanis Village, she had cleared much of northern Bjarnholt. Lythariel helped the displaced people of Haverloch. Aldar proposed that she teach darkness and life magic to other mages. Back at Rimvold, she embraced the unresponsive Silas. Silas revealed his former identity as Sariel, prince of Malverand. He told Lythariel that helping her was an effective way to clear the darkness and that he considered her a friend.

Lythariel searched Thalena's bag and handed a cylinder to Silas. When Silas and Sigurd touched it together, it activated and they vanished. • Deylin: He asked Lythariel to protect and teach Eira. She demanded answers from him and helped Eira escape while he and Ilyra faced the disciples pursuing her.
• Cassian: A friend whose commitment to Eira changed Lythariel's initial distrust. They escaped Xalmyrra together. At Chronasis she restrained him to prevent his death, despite arriving with his opponents.
• Silas: A friend who explained her creation and helped her through Eira's disappearance. They lived and worked together against the darkness.
• Thorik: Her companion in restoring Bjarnholt and rescuing Eira's allies. He carried her into battle and evacuated her with Aldar. She continued helping his people against the darkness.
• Aldar: He supported Eira's training and proposed that Lythariel teach other mages. She caught him when he was too weak to stand during their retreat from Arcanis Village and thanked him for risking his life.

Lythariel is a darkness and life mage created by Eira with the spiral shard's power. She became Eira's mentor and protector, restored corrupted land around Stormhaven, and fought beside the defenders of Valrindor.

Appearance

Lythariel is tall, with pale skin, long black hair and blue eyes. Small glowing purple lines branch across her back.

Personality

Lythariel initially avoided cities and the attention her reputation attracted. As Eira's teacher, she combines demanding physical practice with patient reassurance and teasing. She refuses to fight civilians and intervenes to keep her friends alive, even when they oppose the people traveling with her.

Magic

Lythariel's darkness tendrils lift people and large objects, restrain opponents and propel her between anchors in the terrain. She forms broad protective barriers and disintegration fields. She can absorb corruption and convert it into life energy, leaving fertile soil, grass, flowers and trees. A large conversion can exhaust her enough to collapse. Her life magic also provides limited healing for wounds.

History

Eira's mentor

When the spiral shard was consuming Eira's life, Eira expelled its power in desperation. Her desire for a guide produced Lythariel and introduced darkness magic to Xalmyrra. Eira also altered memories throughout Xalmyrra, giving Lythariel a remembered past. Her apparent childhood in Erenmyr and studies at Valcirae belonged to those memories.

After Silas brought Eira out of the Land of Darkness, Lythariel found and cared for her near its boundary. She taught Eira mental control and physical strength, and demonstrated how corruption could become living vegetation. At Deylin's request, she accompanied Eira to Irrathis to continue her training and protect her. She stayed in Lirien's room at Eira's house, coached Eira through the tournament and taught her to travel using tendrils.

During the Cataclysm, Lythariel shielded civilians in Irrathis. She and Eira raised disintegration barriers against the meteor's shockwave, with Renneth and Rhyzmar helping repel it; Thalena had already reduced the meteor's destructive force. Lythariel helped survivors and watched over Eira during her recovery. She then accompanied the march toward Soltheris to protect Eira during the effort to prevent war.

When Eira lost control and destroyed the opposing armies, Lythariel held against the darkness and sheltered Kaelion. After Deylin took Eira away, she and Cassian followed him into Erenmyr. She caught and carried Cassian into Lirathen when his remaining enchantments failed. They accepted responsibility for escaping with Eira while her parents held back the pursuing disciples. Lythariel carried Eira to Valcirae for Orin's treatment and then west toward the coast. Jin intercepted a disciple following them, and the golden mage opened a gate with Cassian's help, sending them to Thalcoris.

Thalcoris and her origin

Tazarin initially threatened to imprison Eira and Lythariel unless their companions helped his war effort. Lythariel continued training Eira in Tequaltor. She and Eira investigated the fighting and discovered that Tenari were killing their own people. In Xalatun, Zayren attacked Eira and destroyed much of her chest. Lythariel enclosed Eira in a protective barrier, tore off Zayren's arm, struck Razen and destroyed part of the city. A voice from Eira's shard directed their escape through the southern gate.

Jareth met them beyond the gate and gave Lythariel two devices. She refused to follow him into the facility, repelled Jareth's companions, and broke both devices while they drifted in the Void. They emerged on barren land near Ashenford.

After they left Ashenford, Silas explained Lythariel's creation and the memories supplied to Xalmyrra. She questioned whether she was real and pierced her own palm with a tendril. Eira healed the wound with life magic and affirmed her love for Lythariel. Their roles had become reciprocal: the person Lythariel guided was also her creator, responsible for protecting her.

They traveled south through Valrindor together, but Eira disappeared at Rimvold. Lythariel withdrew in grief and refused food until Silas persuaded her to eat. Although she feared leaving before Eira returned, she accepted Thorik's request to help his people and departed for Stormhaven.

Stormhaven and Chronasis

Lythariel held back the darkness around Stormhaven, keeping the city standing. She refused to join the war against Ozaith for its own sake, but boarded the invasion fleet to protect Cassian. She also warned Virel that she would retaliate against Haverloch and Morozkaya if her friends were harmed.

At Chronasis, Lythariel met Cassian and restrained him with tendrils to prevent him from fighting and dying for Thalena. She released him when an enormous asteroid threatened them. At Aelius's request, she kept the weakened invaders from interfering in the battle. She later allowed them to withdraw rather than continue the battle. After Cassian became an archon, she returned to Irrathis. She reunited with Eira, met Lirien, and chose to resume fighting the darkness in a place of her own. She left through the void with Silas.

Arcanis Village and the activator

Lythariel lived with Silas and Krexyn while continuing her work against the darkness. When Thalena sought help at Rimvold, Lythariel insisted on joining because she feared Eira was in danger. Thorik carried her on his axe to Arcanis Village, where she raised barriers against Azarion and Eliona. When Raphael's ice threatened her, Aldar and Virel helped repel it. She caught the exhausted Aldar and held him while Thorik carried them away.

By the retreat from Arcanis Village, she had cleared much of northern Bjarnholt. Lythariel helped the displaced people of Haverloch. Aldar proposed that she teach darkness and life magic to other mages. Back at Rimvold, she embraced the unresponsive Silas. Silas revealed his former identity as Sariel, prince of Malverand. He told Lythariel that helping her was an effective way to clear the darkness and that he considered her a friend.

Lythariel searched Thalena's bag and handed a cylinder to Silas. When Silas and Sigurd touched it together, it activated and they vanished. Lythariel recognized the device from her earlier gate journey, checked the gate below and found it closed. She sent Virel to warn Thalassai, then traveled to Chronasis with Thorik and Glin, bringing the bag containing the Sword of Chronasis. They delivered it to Thalena; Jareth later flew them back to Bjarnholt.

The war in Valrindor

Lythariel initially refused Virel's request to fight at Rimvold. A message from Eira, conveyed through Nahm, persuaded her to join. She fought with Zayren and Remus against Zain, using tendrils and barriers while the two men supplied their own aether and vector attacks. She forgave Zayren for trying to kill her. When Zain rose again behind a crystalline shield after seeming defeated, she pulled the wounded Remus away and provided limited life healing while they withdrew.

During the later fighting around Cyndarel, Remus used vectors to rescue Zayren but was left in the path of one of Kjeldan's bombs. Lythariel tried to intercept it, but its detonation killed Remus. She supplied debris to Zayren's black hole and shielded their retreat from Severin and the other attackers. At Kaldaryn, she blamed herself for Remus's death, while Nahm argued that her choice had kept her and Zayren alive. She was then assigned to rejoin Thorik at Rimvold.

After Silas was restored, Lythariel met him and Zal’therak at Rimvold and returned with them to Stormhaven, where Zayren and Zephyra greeted them. Zayren asked Lythariel to clear the darkness between Durakarn and Brighthaven, and Silas proposed taking her there the next day. Lythariel later attended the Valrindor Council, sitting with Seralyth.

Relationships

• Eira: Her creator, pupil and closest companion. Lythariel guarded and carried Eira through repeated attacks; learning their origin did not diminish their love. Eira's message later persuaded her to return to combat.
