Disaster
The cataclysm devastates Xalmyrra after Eira takes Xol'Zahir's shard. Deylin traces its cause to a previous cycle crashing into the new one, causing the cycle system's hidden danger to spread across the continent.
Effects
The cataclysm unfolds as a collision and merging of worlds. Across Xalmyrra, the ground quakes, volcanoes erupt, lava opens through forests and lowlands, rivers flood, black rain falls, and barbed black spikes strike from the sky.
In Irrathis, defenders shield civilians. The River Selvryn overflows, and falling spikes tear through the city. A meteor destroys the port outside Irrathis; Thalena secretly diverts enough of its impact to keep the city from being leveled.
The damage varies by region. Aemrith needs urgent aid. Varentis survives through the combined defense of Silas, Rhalyn, and Khoradyn. Valcirae is mostly spared. Nearby villages and roads carry blackened shards, dried lava scars, and charred ruins. Soltheris is struck during the same collapse after Aurion's first large orrery demonstration, and Seralyth dies before Aurion can get her to safety.
History & Aftermath
The cataclysm follows the tournament in Irrathis, Aurion's first large orrery demonstration, and Eira's taking of Xol'Zahir's shard. Xalmyrran leaders initially blame Aurion's machine because the beam behaves as if the destroyed orrery were still running and drains life from the land around it. Brynor blames Aurion in the immediate aftermath.
Afterward, survivors rebuild cities, harbors, roads, and public structures. Irrathis's harbor is restored, Soltheris continues rebuilding, and wounded survivors need extensive healing. The cataclysm also leaves people with memories from multiple cycles, giving Aldar, Maelis, Dorian, and Rowenna clues about Eira, Cassian, and Xalmyrra's repeated history.
Politically, the cataclysm pushes Xarion to march on Aurion and brings Xalmyrran leaders into disputes over the orreries. The first demonstration happens during the cataclysm: the runaway orrery and the cycle collision occur together, and Aurion's actions may have accelerated the cycle collision. Later rebuilt orreries operate afterward. The cycle collision remains the cataclysm's root cause.
