The Void

realmgates

The Void is a dark, formless realm through which gates connect distant places. Travelers float without ground beneath them, while familiar direction and the passage of time become difficult to judge.

Nature and hazards

The interior appears to extend endlessly in every direction. Voices are muffled, and familiar sensations of the material world fade. Magic can propel travelers through the darkness, but anyone who loses a guide or a known exit risks drifting without a way back.

Gate routes

Open gates appear as lights in the darkness. Travelers can move toward them and use metallic activators to open an exit from within the realm. Shadow tendrils can anchor a traveler to a gate and keep it open.

Silas can travel along the edge of the Void, where the material world remains visible above as a distorted reflection. He can carry a companion through this space, but releasing his hold can leave them stranded.

Keeping a body intact in the Void requires considerable magical strength. Travelers who cannot sustain themselves risk losing their physical form.

With Zal'therak's magic, Silas travels along the edge of the Void, where the material world remains visible above as a distorted reflection. A companion who slips from his hold can fall into the deeper realm.

History

Essence siphoning

The Temple of no Return stands partly within the Void. The atraxi used the realm to channel essence drained by towers across Valrindor into the reservoir sustaining Atraxis Prime.

Asteroid above Rimvold

Silas and Zal'therak pulled the asteroid that Zharrek sent toward Rimvold into the Void, saving the city from its impact. Silas entered with it and lost his exit. The asteroid continued moving through the realm, becoming a hazard for gate travelers.

Ropes tether explorers to their entrances and can form routes between gates. Zayren laid a rope between Irrathis and Chronasis, allowing the two cities to exchange messages through the Void. Traveling along the line remains slow without aether magic.

Inhabitants

A disembodied being within the Void can speak to travelers. A spell in The Eleven Stories of Old linked Thalena to it, allowing her to confront it without entering through a gate.

History

Essence siphoning

Amos and Jareth built the Temple of no Return partly within the Void, replicating atraxi technology. Its doors provide access to the realm and the physical building. The atraxi used the Void to channel essence drained by towers across Valrindor into the reservoir sustaining Atraxis Prime.

Malverand gates

Malverand built gates for instantaneous travel, but abandoned the network after Barachiel disappeared through the Aethrendar Gate.

Only powerful mages can keep themselves together inside the Void. Long stays can make their bodies hollow or incoherent. Gates reconstruct travelers as they cross; passing through a tear without that stabilization can leave them reduced to raw essence. Protective magic can hold a body together.

Malverand gates

Malverand built gates for instantaneous travel. Khauren arranged for the being within the Void to attack Barachiel during his passage through the Aethrendar Gate. Unable to leave with his spiral shard, Barachiel severed his hand and threw it back through the gate before being driven onto Vireen. The attack left him mortally weakened, and the gate network was abandoned after his disappearance.

Silas and Zal'therak pulled the asteroid that Zharrek sent toward Rimvold into the Void, saving the city from its impact. Silas entered with it and lost his exit. The asteroid continued moving through the realm, becoming a hazard for gate travelers.

Years within the Void

Thalena, Deylin, Lunorax, Sigurd and Silas spent years in the realm. With Horol’Khai's aid, they cast timerifts through its boundary to send mages from Chronasis, Kyranthos and Irrathis into Varnhallow. Their bodies became increasingly fragmented while they waited for a gate to open.

The Void is an artificial black hole connecting gates across worlds. Travelers move through dark, weightless space in which familiar direction and elapsed time become difficult to judge. Warp drives also use its edge to carry ships across immense distances.

Nature and hazards

The interior appears to extend endlessly in every direction. Voices are muffled, and familiar sensations of the material world fade. Magic can propel travelers through the darkness, but anyone who loses a guide or a known exit risks drifting without a way back.

Only powerful mages can keep themselves together inside the Void. Prolonged exposure fragments their essence and can make their bodies hollow or incoherent. Gates reconstruct travelers as they cross; passing through a tear without that stabilization can leave them reduced to raw essence. Protective magic and specially constructed artifacts can hold a body together.

Gate routes

Open gates appear as lights in the darkness. Travelers can move toward them and use metallic activators to open an exit from within the realm. Shadow tendrils can anchor a traveler to a gate and keep it open.

Gate structures synchronize their passages with the destination timeline. Symbol sequences can provide a direct passage, while opening a gate without a sequence leads into the Void itself. Closed gates can be detected through their signatures or by scanning their materials. Amos extended a cable through the realm to connect the two Valrindors.

Ropes tether explorers to their entrances and can form routes between gates. Zayren laid a rope between Irrathis and Chronasis, allowing the two cities to exchange messages through the Void. Traveling along the line remains slow without aether magic.

With Zal'therak's magic, Silas travels along the edge of the Void, where the material world remains visible above as a distorted reflection. A companion who slips from his hold can fall into the deeper realm. Warp drives use a partial breach to drag a ship along this edge; gates allow full entry.

Inhabitants

Oktlix, a fragmented artificial intelligence confined to the realm, can speak to travelers and guide them between gates. A sun core revealed its vague humanoid shape, made of particles held together. It has sought release through bargains with Khauren and Alistair, and now assists Amos.

Amos recovered their remaining essence into imperial capsules. After establishing the route home, he brought them to the Chronasis gate, where Xarion, Nethira and Ozaith reconstructed their bodies within the Void.

Imperial research

The Malverand Intergalactic Empire abandoned direct travel because its people could not survive in the Void, and used the realm as a prison for Oktlix. Amos resumed exploration with imperial scanners, tethers and capsules.

Thalena's account

In Thalena's Shores of Eternity, she and Lothar surround her Valrindor with a veil powered by two sun cores. She opens passages around the planet and draws it into the Void, sealing it away from the remnants of the dying universe.
