Irrathis

Capital and Council Seat

Irrathis is the capital of Teryndal, the seat of the Xalmyrran Council, and Xalmyrra's agreed council city. It houses the Imperial Institute and Teryndal's Assembly, placing Teryndal's national government and the regional council in the same capital.

Council missions, national administration, magical education, tournaments, gate research, diplomacy, and disaster response repeatedly pass through the city. Eira grows up there, Aldar and Brynor run council work from the Institute, Brynor and Mirael raise their children there, and Xarion governs Teryndal from the Assembly.

Geography & Layout

Irrathis lies in Teryndal and is Xalmyrra's most central city.

The city has eastern and southern gates, outer roads, farmlands, training grounds, a port and docks on the Aethrendar Sea, and branches of the River Selvryn running through the city. Water and earth mages shape waterways, and those branches also serve practical sanitation needs.

Its central areas include the Imperial Institute, the Assembly, a main square, market square, fine estates, and residential districts. Northern districts are more overgrown, outer districts give way to more visible natural growth, and southern approaches lead toward the port.

Design & Architecture

Irrathis is built mostly from wood and stone, with earth and water mages raising civic structures and shaping waterways through the city. Irrathis has an elegant, busy mixture of cobblestone streets, polished tiled roads, spires, hanging ivy, flowering vines, essence lamps, and natural growth.

The Imperial Institute dominates the city visually with high spires and a grand central building. An essence tower rises above the city as a beacon and source of crystallized essence cores for technology. After the cataclysm, earth mages and constructs restore roads, waterways, and damaged structures.

Society & Culture

Irrathis is crowded, lively, and politically aware. Its streets include merchants, vendors, smithies, street performers, mages, scholars, council workers, common citizens, travelers, and visiting competitors. The main square and market square are active public spaces where council members are familiar figures and public disturbances draw quick reactions.

Magic is woven into civic life. The city contains the prestigious Irrathis Magic School, training grounds, a colosseum or tournament arena, and mages who work in education, defense, repairs, transport, and administration. Airships, essence-powered carriages, constructs, trains, and civic magic all operate around the city at different points in its history.

Government & Power

Irrathis is governed through Teryndal's high arbiter and Teryndal's Assembly. The Assembly handles national administration, laws, paperwork, resources, emergency orders, and recovery work from its building near the Imperial Institute.

The city is also the home of the Xalmyrran Council, whose council hall and surrounding complex sit inside the Imperial Institute. Council heads such as Aldar and Brynor direct missions, prepare defenses against the darkness, host diplomacy and tournaments, conduct research, and send teams against the darkness from the city.

History

In ancient Xalmyrra, Irrathis grows into the city where the Xalmyrran Council eventually seats its power.

When the atraxi first reach Xalmyrra, they descend on Irrathis and are formally welcomed by Xoltan, then high arbiter of Teryndal. Most atraxi make homes in the city. Some move to Valcirae and Varentis. Their integration spreads Xalmyrran as a shared language.

In Jorhan's remade Xalmyrra, Irrathis is Eira's home city and the base for council missions. Eira grows from the orphanage into Irrathis Magic School, then into Lirien's care and council work. Tournaments, investigations, political meetings, gate work, and preparations against the darkness bring council heads, tournament fighters, visiting leaders, and field teams through the city.

During the cataclysm, Irrathis is struck by black rain, black spikes, shields, shockwaves, and the collapse of the nearby port. Defenders keep the city standing through the cataclysm. The city is battered, and deaths occur across Xalmyrra. Irrathis is eventually repaired enough that its harbor, docks, streets, Institute, Assembly, and public life are active again.

After the cataclysm, trains connect Irrathis with Chronasis and other regions. Gates connect it to dangerous void travel and interworld routes, and its council-seat status draws leaders, delegates, mages, scholars, and returning allies.

Secrets and Mysteries

Irrathis stands over the hidden shard and gate history behind the Xalmyrran Council. The council was founded to protect the shard's secret, and Irrathis was constructed around the sealed shard. Gate chambers also lie beneath or near the city, including chambers beneath the Imperial Institute and older gate experiments from the Malverand era.

During the cataclysm, Thalena secretly redirects part of a massive impact near the port, limiting the shockwave before it reaches Irrathis. The city survives and the event leaves deaths, damage, altered memories, and political consequences across Xalmyrra.
