Ozaith is a god and Thalion's divine companion, formerly the ruler of Ulzathir. He is the father of Helena, later known as Thalena. He is a different god from the Ozaith whom Cassian killed during the invasion of Thalassai.
Appearance
Ozaith's divine form contains moving stars, galaxies, and distorted shapes. On Earth, he appeared to his followers as a man with a falcon's head and regal robes.
Personality
Ozaith expected his children to earn their place through service and training. He pushed Helena to develop her powers and refused her request to become his wielder when he considered her unready. He later sought to reunite with her and ask her forgiveness. He opposes the cycles.
Magic
Ozaith uses aether and cosmic magic. He moves bodies with gravity, holds wounds closed, raises cosmic barriers, and summons enormous asteroids. His connection to the God Realm allows him to retreat from an attack and return through a wielder. He learned to build gates by observing their construction through his wielders.
History
Ulzathir and Helena
Ozaith ruled Ulzathir and received people fleeing war. Aurelia asked for a child capable of inheriting her copied magic. He agreed on the condition that the child would remain his. He touched her with light, and she became pregnant with Helena.
He expected Helena to develop her powers and serve Ulzathir. When she asked to become his wielder after Nadun disappeared, he refused because she was not ready. Alistair abused her, keeping Ozaith unaware of what he was doing. Ozaith disappeared from Ulzathir. The god whom Cassian killed spoke and acted differently from him.
Thalion and Abraxas
During Thalion's journey through ancient Valrindor, Ozaith offered him a pact to fight Abraxas. He opposed the cycles and valued Thalion's efforts to end them. Thalion used repeated reversals to learn his power, while Ozaith helped him plan attacks and protect the retreating fleet.
Ozaith summoned an asteroid against Abraxas, shielded Thalion, and held his wounds closed. Abraxas survived, and his counterattack hurled Thalion into Qarezh. The impact ruined the city before Abraxas's void rays vaporized it. Thalion pulled Abraxas into a rift, and Ozaith stayed with him in the void beyond it. There, Thalion told him how Alistair had abused Helena. Ozaith found a crack in the veil, allowing Thalion to strike through it. They emerged above Earth with Abraxas.
Ozaith persuaded Abraxas to leave one rift open by claiming that he wanted to learn temporal magic. He instead intended to build a gate. He gathered followers who enabled him to descend on Earth, then built the gate beneath the largest pyramid. The other pyramids supplied its power; Thalion enchanted the materials and workers and provided the lightning used in construction. Eira found them and led them home through the timerift.
Guarding Thalion
Ozaith agreed to guard Thalion in stasis until Thalion's own time. In return, Thalion let him investigate Ulzathir and the god who had replaced him. He found factions fighting over the nation and chose to leave it behind. He then remained with Thalion for millennia in the Maraveth vault, periodically waking Eira to check their circumstances.
Relationships
- Thalena: Ozaith is her father. He demanded more training from her when she was young and refused her request to become his wielder. He wants to reunite with her and seek forgiveness.
- Thalion: He gave Thalion his power against Abraxas and remained with him beyond Valrindor. He kept his promise to guard him until Thalion's own time and woke Eira during their long stasis.
- Aurelia: He granted her request for a child who could inherit her copied magic, on the condition that the child would remain his.
- Abraxas: Their conflict began with Ozaith's support for Thalion against the cycles. Ozaith later deceived Abraxas to secure a route home.
Hyperion, formerly known as Ozaith, is the god of Thalassai and the father of Thalena. He came from another Valrindor and ruled Ulzathir after crossing into this world. He became Xarion's god when Xarion still lived as Thalion, and remains his companion after losing his connection to the God Realm.
Appearance
Hyperion has a tall human body, rich curly brown hair, a beard, and stars and galaxies in his eyes. His earlier divine forms contained moving constellations and distorted shapes. On Earth, he appeared to his followers as a man with a falcon's head and regal robes.
Personality
Hyperion valued worship and expected his children to earn their place through service and training. He neglected their need for affection and demanded more from Helena when she was already struggling. He opposed replacing magic with technology. He later acknowledged his failures as a father and sought to repair his relationship with Thalena. He accepts voluntary faith in Thalassai and has begun enjoying food and companionship.
Magic
Hyperion uses aether and cosmic magic. He moves bodies with gravity, holds wounds closed, raises cosmic barriers, and summons enormous asteroids. He can perceive gravitational disturbances that reveal ships hidden from ordinary scanners, and uses this perception to guide attacks against them.
He can shape bodies from essence. He learned to build gates by observing their construction through his wielders. Concentrating gravity into a single point allowed him to break through the veil between worlds. His former God Realm connection also allowed him to retreat from an attack and return through a wielder; Cassian permanently severed that connection.
History
The other Valrindor
Hyperion was the first god of the other Valrindor. At first, he appeared and disappeared without a stable existence, gradually developing a lasting form and free will. He created divine children from parts of himself, giving them names and deeds through which people could worship them. Among them was Helena, who studied magic and later helped Isandro develop technology.
Hyperion opposed research that preserved brains to give people immortality. He destroyed the research chambers in his palace and forbade further work. As technology displaced magic, his children lost followers and divine power. Helena was his last remaining child. When she was dying, he absorbed her essence and left to find another world.
He compressed himself into essence particles and broke through the veil into Valrindor. The crossing exhausted him, leaving him weakened for centuries. The breach he made in Zarephon became part of the connection between the two worlds.
Ulzathir and Helena
Under the name Ozaith, he ruled Ulzathir and received people fleeing war. Aurelia asked for a child capable of inheriting her copied magic. He agreed on the condition that the child would remain his, and used the essence he had preserved from divine Helena to create her within Aurelia. The child grew up as Helena and later became Thalena.
He expected Helena to develop her powers and serve Ulzathir. When she asked to become his wielder after Nadun disappeared, he refused because she was not ready. Alistair abused her, keeping Ozaith unaware of what he was doing. Ozaith disappeared from Ulzathir, while a new god emerged under his name and ruled in his place. This reborn Ozaith opposed Thalassai and was killed by Cassian.
Return and restoration
After returning with Xarion, Ozaith helped Eira and Xarion draw the accumulated essence out of Abraxas to awaken him. He later accompanied Eira, Kaelion, and Xarion to the source. When the mountain above them collapsed, he shrank and widened the rift while Eira adjusted its spell, allowing them to escape into the other Valrindor.
He searched Earth with Xarion and met divine Helena there before she returned to her own time. Their meeting made him confront how he had treated her. He promised to become a better father, knowing the fate she would later suffer.
After their return, he reconstructed Thalena and the other people held in essence capsules, with Xarion and Nethira assisting him. Alistair forced him into a human body, and Cassian severed his God Realm connection. The galaxy shard was unmade, but Hyperion retained his aether and cosmic magic and remained close to Xarion.
Thalena accepted him as Thalassai's god under his original name, Hyperion. He promised to care for his granddaughter and repair his neglect of his daughter. He cautions Thalena against ascending beyond humanity.
Thalena's account
In Thalena's Shores of Eternity, Hyperion accompanied her to Isandro's empire. He detected the Spiral Mandate's hidden ships and fired the ship's railgun against them while she returned to warn her people.
Relationships
- Thalena: Hyperion is her father. He once demanded achievement from her while neglecting her distress. He acknowledges that treatment and wants to give her the care he withheld. Their restored relationship includes his offer to look after her daughter.
- Xarion: Hyperion gave Thalion his power against Abraxas and kept his promise to guard him through millennia of stasis. He remains Xarion's companion without a formal shard pact and supports him through his grief for Helena and Thalena.
- Xoh'Tenol: Xoh'Tenol is his partner. They have discussed having a child together and share their new lives in human bodies.
- Aurelia: He granted her request for a child who could inherit her copied magic, on the condition that the child would remain his.
- Abraxas: Their conflict began with Ozaith's support for Thalion against the cycles. Ozaith later deceived Abraxas to secure a route home.
