Character Network Timeline

Renneth is a Xalmyrran Council mage from Teryndal, unmatched in Fire Magic and trusted by Aldar as an investigator.

After Eira's darkness ended the fighting between Soltheris and Teryndal, Renneth and Rhyzmar helped save Aurion and Xarion from one of the shadow mages pursuing her. Renneth set the surrounding area on fire and forced the attacker to retreat. Aldar then sent him to investigate Eira's disappearance and the other missing mages. His duties frequently keep him away from Irrathis.

Relationships

  • Maric: His good friend, who serves Xarion as an advisor in Teryndal's Assembly.
  • Rhyzmar: His ally against the shadow mage. Their combined strength saved the exhausted rulers and their companions.

Renneth Pryar is the Xalmyrran Council mage representing Teryndal. He is an exceptional fire mage and one of Aldar's principal investigators, frequently traveling in search of missing people and passages beyond Xalmyrra.

Appearance and personality

Renneth has long, burnt orange hair. He prefers exploration to politics, complains about Council meetings and enjoys solitary missions. He takes pride in his strength and teases Feryon about his lesser skill in fire magic. Despite his complaints about company, he trusts Maric and enjoys traveling with him.

Magic

Renneth produces flames that change from blue through purple to white, combines fire and air to propel boats, and uses earth magic to open concealed passages. He senses individual mage signatures and the residue their spells leave behind, allowing him to reconstruct movements and battles after the people involved have departed.

History

Early adventures

At seventeen, Renneth was already level six and had graduated a year earlier. Rhyzmar recommended him for a voyage west from Aemrith with Aldar, Dorian and Rowenna. His fire and air magic helped propel their boat. When Aldar rescued the infant Cassian from another vessel, Renneth sensed a similarity between their essences and detected someone watching from the sky. Aldar encouraged him to seek a Council position.

Renneth became Teryndal's representative and continued adventuring. He and Jin Leiyun went on missions together, while Aldar regularly sent him to investigate developments across Xalmyrra.

The missing mages and Varentis

After Eira's darkness ended the fighting between Soltheris and Teryndal, Renneth and Rhyzmar helped save Aurion and Xarion from a shadow mage pursuing her. Renneth set the surrounding area ablaze and forced the attacker to retreat. Aldar then sent him to investigate her disappearance. Through essence residue, Renneth traced the shadow mages' battles and found a gate in western Erenmyr. He also followed traces of Silas and Draven to Rhalyn's house in Varentis.

Aldar sent him and Maric to investigate the passage near Varentis. Rhalyn guided them, Feryon and Durvek to the cave leading toward Thundermarch. Strange mages attacked the party there. Renneth fought Krexyn, noticed that he only defended himself, and spared him. They took him to Irrathis, where Aldar assigned Renneth and Maric to guard him while Rhalyn taught him their language.

Gin and the gates

At the Council gate, Renneth supplied essence alongside Aurion, lighting five symbols before their attempt failed. Aldar's mirror reflected Renneth and Brynor while failing to reflect Aurion.

On a later journey through Erenmyr, Renneth bonded with the fire frog Gin, while Maric bonded with Spin. The frogs followed their thoughts and carried them to Deylin and Ilyra's village. Renneth found a hidden gate beneath their house. He then led Maric to a secluded swamp house, where two figures required them to keep their meeting secret. Renneth kept the promise and refused to explain the encounter to Brynor.

With Brynor supplying essence and Thalvian preparing the mechanism, he later opened the Council gate and briefly sensed Cassian through the void.

When the darkness besieged Velundra, Aldar sent Renneth, Maric and Ilyra to reinforce its defenders. Renneth and Maric departed on their frogs.

Relationships

  • Maric: His close friend and frequent traveling companion. Maric welcomes his company despite Renneth's complaints, and they work together on Council investigations.
  • Aldar: A close friend who recognized his talent while he was young, encouraged his Council career and trusts his investigations. Renneth resists his meetings but carries out his missions.
  • Rhyzmar: His longtime companion in the Adventurers' Guild. Rhyzmar recommended him for the voyage with Aldar and fought beside him against the shadow mage.
  • Gin: The fire frog bonded to him in Erenmyr. Gin follows his thoughts and carries him on missions.

His extreme heat can disrupt the formation of aether spells. Against Zayren, he superheated the air so the mage could not form spells around him; Zayren could still cast elsewhere and send the completed spells toward him.

Velundra and the northern expedition

When the darkness besieged Velundra, Renneth and Maric rode their frogs to its defense. Renneth burned the advancing creatures, destroyed a tree hurled at the defenders and protected the army beside Ilyra. There he met Kaelion and Zayren. He heard Xoh’Tenol's voice, and the god called him a new follower.

When Thalena visited Irrathis, Renneth recognized her as the person behind Arcanis's guidance. She asked him and Maric to care for Gin and Spin and confirmed that she had given the frogs their names. She also described Renneth as half-god, comparing him to Cassian. Renneth and Maric subsequently left on their frogs for an expedition north, intending to explore the lands beyond Xalmyrra.

History

Early adventures

Rhyzmar found Renneth during a quest deep inside a dungeon. Renneth had entered the last Xalmyrran cycle from outside and could not explain where he came from. He later adventured with Rhyzmar, John and Deylin.

At seventeen, Renneth was already level six and had graduated a year earlier. Rhyzmar recommended him for a voyage west from Aemrith with Aldar, Dorian and Rowenna. Renneth Pryar is the Xalmyrran Council mage representing Teryndal and the fire and earth god formerly known as Kharvos and Pyragos. He grew up among the Adventurers' Guild without memories of his divine life, became a powerful fire mage and explorer, and later gave the lava shard to his close friend Maric.

Appearance

Renneth has long, burnt orange hair. As Pyragos, he took both adult and child human forms, with hair that could blaze like fire. He used a child's form to keep humans from sensing him.

Personality

Renneth prefers exploration to politics and often complains about being confined to Irrathis or made to attend Council meetings. He enjoys solitary missions, takes pride in his strength, and teases other fire mages about their lesser skill. Despite his complaints about company, he trusts Maric and enjoys traveling with him.

As Pyragos, he regretted his failures and wanted to make amends. He sought Isandriel for answers about what had happened to him. He rarely chose wielders, and those he chose were often weaker people he could protect and strengthen.

Magic

Renneth excels in Fire Magic and Earth Magic. He produces flames that change from blue through purple to white, propels boats with fire and air, and senses individual mage signatures and the residue their spells leave behind. He traced movements across Xalmyrra through that residue and followed Nerissa's trail when equipment designed to detect divine power missed her.

His extreme heat can disrupt the formation of aether spells. Against Zayren, he superheated the air so the mage could not form spells around him; Zayren could still cast elsewhere and send the completed spells toward him. Renneth's water and ice magic developed more slowly, and Spin taught him water magic during the northern voyage.

Through the lava shard, Renneth advises Maric, senses through him and guides his attacks. He taught Maric to suppress his essence during their journey in Rahmavir. He had not regained Kharvos's full strength, and the fight with Gabriel left him exhausted.

History

Kharvos and Thamrielle

Kharvos belonged to the first generation of God Cores, which were made from the essence of thousands of mages. Thamrielle supplied a large part of the essence used to create him. Together, she and Kharvos also helped forge the core that became Pyrathalor. Kharvos became Thamrielle's god, speaking through the lava shard.

The entity guiding Alistair's attack on Zarephon planned for Kharvos to coordinate from another entrance and secure the Source for Alistair if it could be moved.

During Isandriel's expedition into the Plains of Eternity, an unfamiliar being approached him with a plan for Thamrielle to take what they believed was the Source and deliver it to the chosen. He encouraged her hope that it could restore Barachiel. They decided to betray the arrangement and take the object back to Isandriel instead.

Thamrielle entered Zarephon and drew fully on Kharvos's power to descend into the lake beneath the mountain. She recovered a brilliant crystal and returned to the expedition. The object was a powerful essence core planted so its finder would lead Abraxas and his allies to Thalion, rather than the Source. Thamrielle's obsession with restoring Barachiel intensified, and Kharvos refused contact with the other gods. She fled with the core and fought Isandriel when he tried to stop her. After Isandriel broke her defenses and exhausted her Malverand heart, Abraxas intervened, took the core and destroyed her.

An outside influence had invaded Kharvos's mind and altered his essence. His mind was not functioning properly when he tried to help Thamrielle restore Barachiel. After Malverand's destruction and Thamrielle's death, Nerissa rescued him and sheltered him in Thiravos. She removed the influence from his mind, but his essence had already changed.

Pyragos in Thiravos

Under the name Pyragos, he became Nerissa's lover. She granted him some of her followers to sustain his existence, and he took centuries to regain his full strength after his previous wielder's death. He used earth magic to shape cities and terraform land. He avoided the God Realm. When Nerissa chose Nero as her wielder, Pyragos descended beside him in Omberion before setting out in search of Isandriel. He warned Nero that war was coming and wanted to help Valrindor while seeking answers about what had happened to him.

Pyragos eventually wandered away in a child's human form. His human life in Teryndal began without the memories that would have identified him as Kharvos or Pyragos.

The Adventurers' Guild and Council

Rhyzmar found Renneth deep inside a dungeon, badly injured and without memories. Parts of his body were missing and his heart barely beat. Rhyzmar named him and raised him among the Adventurers' Guild, where Renneth gained recognition as a Teryndal citizen. Renneth had entered the Xalmyrran cycle from outside. He later adventured with Rhyzmar, John and Deylin.

At seventeen, Renneth was already level six and had graduated a year earlier. On Rhyzmar's recommendation, he accompanied Aldar, Dorian and Rowenna on a voyage west from Aemrith. His fire and air magic helped propel their boat. When Aldar rescued the infant Cassian from another vessel, Renneth sensed a similarity between their essences and detected someone watching from the sky. Aldar encouraged him to seek a Council position. Renneth became Teryndal's representative and one of Aldar's principal investigators.

During the cataclysm, he helped Eira, Lythariel and Rhyzmar brace Irrathis against the descending meteor. Thalena deflected its main shockwave out of sight of the other mages.

After Eira's darkness ended the fighting between Soltheris and Teryndal, Renneth and Rhyzmar helped save Aurion and Xarion from one of the shadow mages pursuing her. Renneth set the surrounding area ablaze and forced the attacker to retreat. Aldar then sent him to investigate Eira's disappearance. He traced the shadow mages' battles and the movements of Deylin and Draven, finding gates and evidence of a passage near Varentis.

Gates, Gin and Velundra

Aldar sent Renneth and Maric to investigate the passage near Varentis.

At the Council gate, Renneth first supplied essence alongside Aurion, lighting five symbols before their attempt failed.

On a later journey through Erenmyr, Renneth bonded with the fire frog Gin, while Maric bonded with Spin. The frogs responded to their thoughts and carried them to Deylin and Ilyra's village. Renneth found a hidden gate beneath their house. He then led Maric to a secluded swamp house, where they met Thalena and Hrzai and promised to keep the meeting secret.

With Brynor supplying essence and Thalvian preparing the mechanism, he later opened the Council gate and briefly sensed Cassian through the void. When the darkness besieged Velundra, he and Maric rode their frogs to its defense. Renneth burned the advancing creatures, destroyed a tree hurled at the defenders and protected the army beside Ilyra. Xoh’Tenol spoke to him there and accepted him as a follower.

The northern voyage

Thalena described Renneth as half-god and later identified Pyrathalor as his father. Her explanation of his parentage was mistaken. Aldar sent Renneth to establish diplomatic connections with unknown northern nations. He left Xalmyrra with Maric, Gin and Spin. They met Kazehiro in Shanari and visited Hanamizu before Renneth followed Nerissa's essence trail to a moving island gate. With assistance from its far side, he opened it and reached Pelagos in Thiravos.

Following Brontes's sequence instructions, Renneth used a supplied essence core and the attached cables to open the gate from Pelagos to Pelagia. At the Pelagia Consulate, he met Lucilla and became her lover. Nerissa brought Maric there and explained that Renneth was her former lover Pyragos, the god Kharvos. The memories returning in his dreams were fragments of that life. He chose to keep the name Renneth and his allegiance to his Xalmyrran friends.

Maric's god

When Maric agreed to accompany Nero into Rahmavir, Renneth offered to become his god so he could protect him. On Pelagia's beach, Maric accepted. Renneth's essence drew inward, and a shockwave from their joined hands turned the sand into glass. The lava shard formed in Maric's palm. Nerissa then taught Renneth how to move through the God Realm while Maric traveled with Nero.

Through Maric, Renneth heard Raphael's account of the ancient Order and recognized Jin among the mages summoned from the future. He learned that the Source was a breach to another world, leaking essence into Valrindor. At Zarephon, he supported Alice's plan to enter the Source lake with Nero and relayed it to Nerissa. He later warned Maric that Raphael might be using Eliona to push him toward Rahmavir's side. When Eliona allowed Maric to leave in exchange for Raphael's life, Renneth claimed to have arranged the warning to their friends in Xalmyrra.

Renneth guided Maric during the fight against Gabriel in Rimvold. Maric used water and ice alongside Renneth's fire and earth to defeat Gabriel's descended form, then collapsed from exhaustion. Renneth made his first descent as Maric's god at the Council in Irrathis and told Aldar and Brynor about Rahmavir's attack. Aldar carried him toward Zeydrith to warn Daryas, and Renneth dissolved back into essence during the flight.

During Maric's fight with Azarion, Renneth relayed Tianlei's news that Zain had been pushed back in Thalassai and learned from Nahm that Azarion was Gabriel's wielder. He urged Maric deep underground as the hurricane approached.

He later helped Maric advance through another hurricane with Jin and Garrik. He was saddened by news that Lucilla had unmade Nerissa. During the fighting over Ulzathir, he told Maric to face Eliona and her arriving mages and had already directed Jin to reach Azarion. He guided Maric's fire against the enemy mages.

After the battle, Renneth guided Maric when he volunteered to carry Princess Myrelia and Gabriel's unstable crystal deep underground. Eliona implanted her Malverand heart in Maric before he carried Myrelia farther down. She suggested that Renneth put himself into the heart to improve their chances of surviving the crystal's detonation. Renneth agreed to try. After the blast, Maric and Renneth remained missing despite the searches. Nero later brought Maric's Malverand heart to the Valrindor Council.

  • Maric: His close friend, frequent traveling companion and later lava shard wielder. Maric welcomes his company despite Renneth's complaints, and Renneth offered the pact because he wanted to protect him in Rahmavir.
  • Rhyzmar: His rescuer and foster parent. Rhyzmar named and raised him, recommended him for the early voyage with Aldar and adventured with him for years.
  • Aldar: A close friend who recognized his talent while he was young, encouraged his Council career and trusted his investigations. Renneth resisted the meetings Aldar required but repeatedly carried out his missions. Renneth also taught him fire magic.
  • Thamrielle: His former wielder and a major contributor to the essence from which Kharvos was created. He helped her attempt to recover the supposed Source and restore Barachiel.
  • Nerissa: His rescuer and lover during his life as Pyragos. She removed the influence from his mind, recognized him as Renneth and taught him to navigate the God Realm. He remained loyal to Xalmyrra when she fought against it.
  • Lucilla: His lover at the Pelagia Consulate. Their relationship began before he learned that he had once been her mother's lover.
  • Gin: The fire frog bonded to him in Erenmyr. Gin carried him on missions and the northern expedition, and later became an astragon alongside Spin.
