Thiravos

Overview

Thiravos is a northern island nation in Valrindor, paired with Theryssa, with Pelagos as its capital. Kalyx is head consul during Renneth and Maric's visit. Thiravos worships Nerissa, honors Pyragos as its own god, and relies on Nero and the wave shard for divine defense.

Thiravos preserves Malverand-derived language, gates, skyships, and essence-engine technology and remains wary of mainland Valrindor. It sends skyships and mages into Nerissa and Gabriel's attack on Xalmyrra after Gabriel pressures Nerissa, Nero, Lucilla, Kalyx, and the island nations into Raphael's plan.

Geography & Layout

During the Malverand era, Thiravos is a new continent with Theryssa as its northern region. Over time, Thiravos and Theryssa become paired nations, and after the Thiravos-Theryssa Civil War, Remiella uses the wave shard to sever them, shattering the lands into smaller islands scattered across the sea.

Thiravos and Theryssa share one large landmass and also control or use scattered islands. Thiravos is close enough to Theryssa for skyships to travel between Pelagos and Pelagia. Large cities across the two nations use controlled gates. Smaller islands and nearby societies such as Shanari are in the same maritime region.

Design & Architecture

Thiravos's capital stands by the ocean below a hilltop gate chamber, with marble colonnades, white buildings, earthy rooftops, statues, an amphitheater, metallic skyships, and a powerful offshore lighthouse.

The Pelagos Consulate houses Thiravos's consul government. It is a layered marble building with spacious windows and an earthy dome capped by a spire.

Thiravos shares advanced gate and skyship technology with Theryssa. Large cities can have gates. Gate travel is reserved for elite use because activation requires skill, resources, specific sequences, and essence-tower power.

Society & Culture

Thiravos combines oceanic culture, advanced island technology, and worship of Nerissa and Pyragos. Nerissa is Theryssa's primary goddess, and Thiravos also worships her. Pyragos becomes Thiravos's god after Nerissa introduces him to the nation.

Thiravos and Theryssa have long avoided mainland Valrindor. Their leaders know the mainland mainly through old warnings and Malverand dangers. Because of this isolation, they keep their gates guarded and hesitate when mainland rulers seek alliances.

The two nations retain Malverand-derived knowledge. Their language, Malverine, descends from the ancient empire, and much of their technology comes from Malverand designs that evolved locally over time. Thiravosi engineers receive further essence-engine knowledge from Blackcrag after Lucilla negotiates a secret bargain with King George.

Government & Power

Thiravos is governed by consuls, with Kalyx as head consul during Renneth and Maric's visit. The Pelagos Consulate receives foreign visitors, debates contact with mainland Valrindor, prepares the army, coordinates gate use, and plans wartime mobilization with Theryssa's leadership.

Thiravos worships Nerissa and Pyragos as national gods; the consuls hold civic office. Nero, Nerissa's mortal wielder, defends both Thiravos and Theryssa. Thiravos credits Pyragos with city-building, terraforming land, and bringing prosperity to the nation after Nerissa saved him.

Thiravos's policy is usually defensive and isolationist. It prepares for threats when Nerissa, Nero, Kalyx, or the consuls believe the nation is endangered.

History

During Malverand's expansion, Remiella leads thousands of colonists to establish colonies on the new continent of Thiravos and its northern region, Theryssa. She governs both regions as a Malverand guardian and wielder of the wave shard.

Thiravos and Theryssa prosper under Remiella for a time. Unrest grows into the Thiravos-Theryssa Civil War. Remiella pours the wave shard's power into separating Thiravos and Theryssa, shattering the lands into countless islands and unleashing a massive tsunami across northern Valrindor. Nerissa manipulated Remiella into overloading so she could seek a new wielder and free Thiravos and Theryssa from Malverand's control.

After Malverand begins to fracture, Eremion attacks Thiravos and Theryssa, and the islands temporarily agree to serve in his army. Nerissa wanted the two nations free from Malverand so they could govern themselves once the old guardians were defeated.

Three millennia before Renneth and Maric's visit, Pyragos manifests beside Nerissa after his former wielder dies and Nerissa saves him. Thiravos continues worshiping him after his eventual disappearance, crediting him with bringing prosperity to the land. Eremion's scouts later reach Thiravos; Nero turns them away, and Thiravos prepares for Eremion's return, but he never attacks again.

When King George seeks an alliance that would send the strongest mages of Thiravos and Theryssa against Shroudvale, Lucilla refuses to send the nations' forces against Shroudvale. She negotiates a secret bargain: Blackcrag will teach their engineers better essence-engine technology, and Lucilla will provide an heir for George's line.

Renneth and Maric arrive in Pelagos through an unexpected gate route, then continue to Pelagia through the shared gate network. During their stay, they encounter Thiravos's consular government, advanced technology, isolation from the mainland, worship of Nerissa and Pyragos, and signs of Renneth's former life as Pyragos.

After Zarephon's destruction near the source, Gabriel pressures Nerissa and the two nations into siding with Raphael's faction against Xalmyrra. Kalyx mobilizes Thiravos's skyships and mages, Brontes backs increased gate usage, and Thiravosi forces join Nerissa and Gabriel's attack on Xalmyrra. During Nerissa's Invasion of Xalmyrra, Nerissa's alliance with Raphael against Xalmyrra turns Lucilla against her. Lucilla unmakes Nerissa, and Thiravos loses its long-standing goddess. Gabriel's thundercloud crystal makes Kalyx an essence bomb and destroys him.

Secrets and Mysteries

Thiravos's hidden history includes Nerissa manipulating Remiella into overloading the wave shard, Pyragos's disappearance and later life as Renneth, and the fall of Malverand. During Renneth's time in Pelagos, signs of his former life as Pyragos lead Brontes, Kalyx, and the consuls to respond with reverence. Gabriel and Nerissa then send Thiravosi skyships and mages into Nerissa and Gabriel's attack on Xalmyrra, where Lucilla unmakes Nerissa.
