Overview
Tianlei is the storm god of Thundermarch and the divine being behind the lightning shard. He is bound to Jin Leiyun after Jin kills Ren Wuye, Tianlei's former shard wielder, in Stormpeak. Thundermarch worships Tianlei as its storm god, reveres him publicly, and teaches the dragon arts under his storm tradition.
Tianlei opposes Xol'Zahir and the darkness alongside gods such as Zal'therak and Xoh'Tenol. Later, he passes intelligence through Jin on Gabriel's defeat in Rimvold, Khauren controlling Zain, the Cyndarel stalemate, the Solvarria front, and the worsening cracks in the God Realm.
Shard Voice and Descended Form
Tianlei most often speaks through the lightning shard in his wielder's palm. The shard is a lightning-mark sigil, sometimes shaped like a forked bolt, and its glow varies by circumstance.
When Tianlei descends, stormclouds gather unnaturally fast and form a massive humanoid body of cloud, lightning, thunder, rain, and divine essence. His descended form has lightning-wreathed eyes and can become solid enough to block attacks.
Lightning Shard
Tianlei's shard is a lightning mark or sigil in his wielder's palm. Ren Wuye, Jin, and temporarily Thalion Zenith carry it; the mark can glow blue, fade when Tianlei weakens, or vanish after a pact ends.
Personality
Tianlei is direct, proud, and action-oriented. He values decisive strength, which is why he offers Jin a pact immediately after Jin kills Ren Wuye. He is severe when allies are threatened, impatient with hesitation, and loyal to his wielders and allies.
His reputation varies sharply by culture and enemy. Blackcrag accounts list his love for humanity as a weakness, while guardian-aligned enemies label him bloodthirsty or a god of death and destruction. Tianlei protects Jin, remains friends with Thalion Zenith, guards Thundermarch's storm tradition, and once cared for Thalena as a child.
Abilities
Tianlei's main domain is storms. He empowers lightning, air, thunder, rain, flight, speed, and large-scale storm creation, and he can command elements beyond storms to a lesser degree.
As a god, Tianlei can communicate through his shard, form or release pacts, focus power through a wielder, descend into the mortal world, and receive strength from followers. He can see through people who share essence with him and can carry information between gods, wielders, and allies. Through Thalion, he also translates language, processes written material rapidly, supplies local knowledge, and sorts battlefield intelligence.
Tianlei depends on essence and followers to remain strong, and being cut off from Jin and the outer world limits his ability to act directly.
History
Tianlei's origin is a bootstrap loop. After the Fall of Malverand, Thalion Zenith travels through drought-stricken Thundermarch with Helena Hyperion, Ignatius, and Sephara, brings rain to villages, accepts the title Tianlei in Stormbrook, and spreads the legend of Tianlei as the Stormbringer. That belief becomes the seed of the god, whose emergence aligns with Thundermarch's independence.
By Jin's lifetime, Tianlei is worshiped throughout Thundermarch. Cloudrift Temple teaches dragon arts under his storm-god tradition, Cloudrift is dedicated to him, and Ren Wuye carries his shard as his chosen protector. Ren's withdrawal to Stormpeak leaves border communities and cities feeling abandoned, and Jin blames Ren, Emperor Feng, and Tianlei for Thundermarch's suffering.
After Cloudrift is attacked and Stormpeak fails to answer quickly enough, Jin locates Ren in a Stormpeak inn and kills him. Tianlei immediately offers Jin a pact, marks his palm with the lightning shard, stops him from killing Emperor Feng, and sends him toward Xalmyrra to face Xol'Zahir.
During the Battle of Raindawn, Jin returns to Stormpeak and then Raindawn while Tianlei's pact with him remains active. Zhang's public proclamation, Yingshui's reverence, and renewed belief from soldiers, mages, and refugees strengthen Tianlei during the defense of Raindawn, allowing Jin to act openly as Tianlei's returning shard wielder. After the Battle of Raindawn, Tianlei sends Jin east toward Skarnheim after Zharrek.
During the Varnhallow time displacement, Tianlei is trapped in Jin's severed hand. He forms a temporary pact with Xarion, who becomes Thalion Zenith, and lends him divine storm power during the rise of the Order of Thalion Zenith. The pact sends Thalion into the same displaced history that creates Tianlei's own beginning. Sephara remains in Stormbrook to teach lightning magic, and John later sustains the local worship in secret.
John, the time-displaced Jin, eventually reclaims Tianlei after a duel with Thalion. Thalion gives up the pact, and Tianlei forms the pact with John again. John and Tianlei then fight beside the Order during the Fall of Malverand as the Order moves against Raphael and Eremion around Jazarel and Maraveth.
After the Order enters stasis, Tianlei remains separated from Jin until Eira's group restores Jin's hand. He returns to the God Realm weakened, then gradually recovers enough to speak again.
After he regains enough strength through Jin, Tianlei passes intelligence across Valrindor, communicates with gods such as Nahm, Nerissa, Hrzai, and Xoh'Tenol, warns allies of new threats, stays with Jin and Cassian during Qadir's essence detonation near Pyrenis, and tracks worsening cracks and barriers in the God Realm. He also backs Cassian's plan to sever the link to the God Realm once their enemies are defeated.
