Overview

Abraxas is the Keeper of Prophecies of the Oracles of Eternity and guardian of the source beneath Zarephon. His enemies called him the Dark Lord of the Plains of Eternity and the King of Eternity. Abraxas is a mantle that passed to a successor after his disappearance.

The prophecy fragments he guarded were messages that a copy of Thalena sent through the breach from the other Zarephon. The Oracles interpreted the messages as prophecies while guarding the source from people who sought origin magic.

Nature and Appearance

Abraxas began as a low-essence defense construct created by the Malverand Intergalactic Empire. Mike and Rafe sent it through the breach while Isandro oversaw the experiment. The construct contained reflective nanites and organic particles. Its directives ordered it to reassemble and protect the far side. It was built to mimic local life and communicate through the breach.

The two sides of the breach were thousands of years apart, so the construct's creators never received a reply. The construct lived a full life in the Plains of Eternity as Abraxas. Moranna raised him in Zarephon after his arrival.

Abraxas normally appeared as a middle-aged man with silver hair, deep-blue eyes, and robes that flowed like rivers. He remained calm in danger and approached unfamiliar people and places with curiosity. His body held almost no essence, shed no blood when cut, and resisted essence sensing.

When his male form collapsed, Abraxas became a black core that retained his intellect and ability to mimic a person. Jareth modified the core. Cassian placed a new protective directive within it. Abraxas then re-formed as a woman with long silver hair, ocean-blue eyes, cold skin, and the same river-like robes.

Magic and Abilities

Abraxas uses origin magic, a form of nanite-mirrored technology based on ancient magic. He cannot use ordinary essence magic. Excess essence destabilizes his body.

Essence reversal returns an area and its occupants to an earlier state. Abraxas used it to return the battlefield to a moment when his larger attack was already taking shape.

His void magic draws on particles with properties different from essence. His origin spells open fractures and voids, fire black and prismatic rays, and form liquid-glass shields. His black rays carry no essence signature and are difficult to sense.

Abraxas used containment spells to hold armies for centuries and rifts to displace opponents. He can also close timerifts that leak essence into another world.

History

Abraxas taught Aurelia mirror magic. She used it to copy the essence-reversal spell reserved for the Keeper of Prophecies.

Abraxas and the Oracles fought Rahmavir and its allies over control of the source. He later confronted Thalion and Ozaith during the Thalion-Abraxas War. Thalion's impact ruined Qarezh, and Abraxas's pursuing void rays vaporized the city. Thalion then dragged Abraxas through one of Abraxas's rifts, taking them both beyond Valrindor.

After they landed on Earth, Abraxas closed the timerifts that Thalion's escape had opened. Eira found Abraxas and Thalion, and the three returned to Valrindor. Passing through Jorhan's veil stripped Abraxas of his origin magic and his memory of how to cast it. Eira preserved him in temporal stasis alongside the displaced members of Thalion's Order.

In the present, Eira revived Abraxas by having Xarion and Ozaith draw accumulated essence out of his body. His memories returned in fragments. His new form then followed Cassian's directive to protect Thalassai.

During the attack on Pyrenis, Abraxas overwhelmed Zain and forced him to retreat. She then used voids to contain Qadir's expanding essence detonation. The blast destroyed her body, and she disintegrated into black and white particles. Cassian's directive gave her a purpose, and she remained committed to guarding the source.

Jin recovered most of Abraxas's black particles. The remnants were sealed inside an essence-empty core and left in Jareth and Cyrena's care. The surviving nanites remain too damaged for full recovery.
