Overview
Pyrathalor, first called Thalor, is an ancient god of fire and ice who begins as an obsidian being when Isandriel and Thamrielle force the burning frost crystal awake on a volcanic glacier in Morozkaya. Viviana later activates the crystal with him in Radiance Prime, causing the fire-and-frost eruption that transforms him into Pyrathalor.
Morozkaya worships Pyrathalor as its fire-and-ice god, Dorian and Rowenna establish Kyranthos's diarchy while his rites enrich Kyranthos's soil, and he chooses Viviana as his wielder. Thalena captures him outside Chronasis, and his essence becomes a captured core used by Aelius, Cassian, and finally Thalena. He is destroyed when Thalena draws the remaining power from his core while stopping the asteroid above Chronasis.
Appearance and Nature
As Thalor, he is a smooth, featureless, vaguely humanoid obsidian being raised from the volcanic glacier where the burning frost crystal is awakened. As Pyrathalor, he becomes a massive frost-and-flame god whose body combines molten heat, obsidian, frost, and divine fire. He can also shrink to a smaller, more humanlike form while retaining the divine mark of heat and cold in his skin.
Pyrathalor commonly carries the Glaive of Frost and Fire. The weapon mirrors his nature, with molten force on one side and impossible frost on the other, and later becomes Viviana's weapon after he gifts it to her.
Personality
Pyrathalor is proud, blunt, casual, and irreverent. He is impatient with mortal politics, jokes easily around his own power, and repeatedly underestimates Thalena before descending against her.
He is also protective of Morozkaya and warm toward those he accepts. He rescues Viviana from Julian's betrayal, brings her to Kyranthos, is proud of her, and remains concerned for Morozkaya and his wielder after his capture. During Dorian and Rowenna's funeral, he honors their wish for a rite that lets his fire and ice enrich the land.
Abilities
Pyrathalor uses divine-scale fire and ice. His essence burns and freezes at once, disrupts temporal and aether magic through extreme heat and cold, empowers wielders, and fuels both destructive combat and Morozkayan rites bound to the land. He can see through followers who share essence with him and descend through that shared essence.
With the Glaive of Frost and Fire, Pyrathalor is a devastating physical combatant. Outside Chronasis, his attacks tear open the battlefield, threaten the city from a distance, and nearly kill Cassian even after Thalena traps him with a black hole.
Pyrathalor can form pacts with mortal wielders. Viviana becomes his shard wielder in Morozkaya, while Balthazar later carries the burning frost crystal as Pyrathalor's first chosen wielder so they can protect Morozkaya. Before he becomes Pyrathalor, Thalor works in Brighthaven as a forger and metalworker and stabilizes old Malverand technology there.
History
Isandriel takes the burning frost crystal from the dormant first-generation god cores beneath Maraveth and first tests it with Dalren in Radiance Prime. Dalren produces only a brief response. Isandriel then carries the crystal to Morozkaya with Thamrielle, and the two channel into it on a glacier beside a volcano. The forced activation melts ice, shakes the volcano, and raises the obsidian being who names himself Thalor.
Thalor lives among humans and eventually works in Radiance Prime as a respected forger. Years later, Viviana reaches the forge with Isandriel and gives him her glaive. She then has him channel essence into the burning frost crystal with her. The eruption destroys much of Radiance Prime with fire and frost, transforms Thalor into Pyrathalor, and gives Alistair the destruction he later teaches as Brighthaven's anti-god origin.
Viviana and Isandriel take Pyrathalor to Kyranthos, where Dorian, Rowenna, and Balthazar receive him. Kyranthos becomes his home. Over time, Pyrathalor becomes Morozkaya's fire-and-ice god; Dorian and Rowenna's diarchy grows around Kyranthos, his rites enrich the soil, and his absence later leaves the city's water, lava, and ground failing.
In Viviana's later life, Pyrathalor rescues her after Julian tries to deliver her to Alistair. He makes a pact with her, brings her to Kyranthos, and places her with Kazimir, Kyrana, Ivan, and Liana for training and leadership. With Viviana, Isandriel, Kazimir, and Morozkayan mages, he later enters Radiance Prime, cuts through the Spire of Triumvirate defenses, and blocks Alistair's followers while Viviana kills Alistair.
During the invasion of Thalassai, Pyrathalor aligns with gods and wielders who fear Thalena's power. He descends outside Chronasis expecting his fire and cold to counter her magic. Thalena has prepared the battlefield. She traps him with a black hole and a golden barrier, captures his essence, and prevents his full return. His final throw of the glaive pierces Cassian's chest before the Thalassai preserve Cassian with temporal magic and healing.
After the capture, Pyrathalor remains partly aware in the God Realm while Ozaith, Nahm, and Hrzai plan around Thalassai and the recovery of his essence. During the Chronasis defense that follows, Thalena creates a core from his essence. Aelius uses it against Ozaryn and the strike force outside Chronasis, Cassian channels it into Ozaith after Xelthys pins Ozaith with a golden sword, and Thalena drains the last of it while stopping the asteroid above Chronasis. When the core shatters, Pyrathalor is gone from the world and beyond.
Relationships
- Viviana is Pyrathalor's closest mortal ally and wielder. She channels essence into the burning frost crystal with Thalor, fights beside him in Morozkaya and Brighthaven, and carries the loss of him after Thalassai.
- Balthazar carries the burning frost crystal for Morozkaya, Dorian and Rowenna establish the Kyranthos diarchy, Kazimir, Kyrana, Ivan, and Liana later govern and defend Morozkaya, and Morozkaya's people worship Pyrathalor.
- Isandriel and Thamrielle create Thalor through the burning frost crystal. Thamrielle's essence and Kharvos are used to forge the god core that becomes Pyrathalor.
- Ozaith, Nahm, and Hrzai ally with Pyrathalor against Thalassai, though their alliance is strategic and unstable.
- Thalena captures Pyrathalor, Cassian uses his essence against Ozaith, and Aelius carries his essence core in Thalassai's defense. Alistair teaches Radiance Prime's destruction as a warning against Pyrathalor.
- Renneth's divine fire resembles Pyrathalor's enough that Thalena mistakes him for Pyrathalor's son. Renneth was previously Kharvos/Pyragos.
