Overview
Blackcrag is an industrial dominion in northern Valrindor. It begins during the Malverand era as a mineral-rich region assigned to Eremion and later still uses skyship, essence-engine, stormglass, construct, and weapons technology from the Malverand era.
Blackcrag's monarchy, council, palace, and skyship docks operate from Omberion. Shroudvale blocks its southern approach, Garrik is raised there as Prince of Blackcrag under King George, and Garrik's flight before coronation opens the path to Eremion's regency and renewed military preparation.
Geography
Blackcrag lies in northern Valrindor. Its territory includes fertile plains, forests, orderly towns and villages, roads, fortified cities, coastal areas, and the Blackcrag mountains north of Omberion. At least one active volcano rises near the capital, and the volcanic mountains contain mining pits and lava pits used in Blackcrag funeral practice.
Shroudvale blocks Blackcrag's southern approach and isolates the dominion from central Valrindor. Blackcrag also has eastern ports, including Brunholl, a basalt-built port city on floodplains and harsh seas.
Design and Technology
Blackcrag's architecture uses dark basalt, volcanic stone, stormglass, angular design, and resilient engineering. Omberion has the mature style, with basalt-paved streets, dark volcanic towers, stormglass windows, glass skybridges, spires, broad boulevards, skyship docks, a royal palace, and a council chamber with volcanic-rock furniture and large stormglass windows.
Blackcrag's power rests on skyships, essence engines, stormglass construction, constructs, and advanced weapons. Much of this technology descends from Malverand remnants and remains rare outside the dominion. Astrid oversees skyship development, handles essence cores and stormglass machinery, and later joins Eremion and Blackcrag engineers in upgrading ships and weapons.
George uses Blackcrag's engine knowledge as diplomatic leverage during his bargain with Thiravos and Theryssa. After Lucilla accepts the arrangement that produces Garrik as Blackcrag's heir, George leaves engineers behind to teach improved essence-engine construction.
Society and Culture
Blackcrag is isolated and guarded. Under George, the dominion keeps a low profile, avoids open military commitments, uses voluntary military service, and governs through a monarchy supported by a council. Public life includes engineers, scouts, elite mages, diplomats, skyship pilots, artisans, miners, farmers, and citizens living around skyship docks, roads, fortified cities, ports, mines, farms, and production facilities.
Under Eremion, Blackcrag becomes more openly militarized. Weaker mages are reassigned to farms, food production, and menial labor. The strongest mages are gathered in Omberion. Elite skyship pilots train rigorously, strong mages are paired to produce stronger children, and the population turns against Garrik.
Blackcrag funeral practice includes wrapping the dead in ceremonial basalt cloth and lowering the body into lava pits deep within the volcanic mountains.
Government
Blackcrag is a monarchy based in Omberion. George rules during Garrik's youth, and Garrik is raised as prince and expected successor. The monarchy is supported by a governing council.
Governing Council
Blackcrag's council handles dominion policy, trade, fortifications, diplomacy, scouting, skyship development, and responses to Shroudvale. It operates from Omberion's royal palace and council chamber, where councilors review maps, scouting intelligence, and border conditions while deciding Blackcrag's defenses and contact with nearby powers.
The council includes Ulrich, Bastian, Astrid, and Eremion. Ulrich is a scholar and Garrik's tutor, Bastian handles scouting and external intelligence, Astrid handles divine magic and skyship engineering, and Eremion uses reform policy to gain control of the dominion.
After George's death, Garrik remains a prince until coronation, and the council governs in the interim. When Garrik and Astrid flee, the council eventually accepts Eremion as temporary regent, and he later becomes permanent king. After Eremion's defeat, Garrik pushes into Blackcrag. The population remains loyal to Eremion.

History
In ancient Malverand, Barachiel assigns mineral-rich Blackcrag to Eremion. Eremion sends scouting missions, artisans, and engineers to assess its resources, then plans mining operations, farmlands, production facilities, and skyship construction. Blackcrag quickly becomes a mining, farming, production, and skyship-building hub for the empire.
After Barachiel's disappearance, Eremion gives Blackcrag to Thamrielle as a region of her own after her retreat from Rahmavir. Blackcrag flourishes under Thamrielle's rule before Eremion proposes joint rule, absorbs much of her army, and moves against her. As Malverand's guardians fight each other after Barachiel's disappearance, Remiella's final wave-shard spell destroys cities in northern Malverand and reaches deep within Blackcrag, and Eremion's forces use Blackcrag reinforcements against the other guardians.
Under George, Blackcrag has recovered from old devastation and retains Malverand remnants. George rules from Omberion and seeks allies against Shroudvale, eventually bargaining with Thiravos and Theryssa for an heir. The bargain produces Garrik, who is publicly raised as George's son and future king.
Garrik grows into council life. Blackcrag maintains limited contact with the rest of Valrindor. The dominion opens contact and trade with Morindel City, and Astrid brings a strange crystal heart back from Morindel. The heart restores Eremion, a former Guardian of Malverand who once controlled Blackcrag and Morindel; he wins council trust and pushes reforms in Blackcrag's agriculture, trade, military planning, skyships, and mage training.
After George dies, Garrik flees before coronation. Eremion uses the vacuum to become regent and then king, then directs Blackcrag's farms, labor assignments, mage training, and skyship forces toward the Maraveth War. He later marches Blackcrag's forces toward Maraveth and the Malverand vault, where Garrik's army fights him.
After Eremion's defeat, Garrik advances into Blackcrag. Blackcrag forces resist fiercely, fortified cities fall, and Garrik's army reaches the Blackcrag mountains before the Siege of Omberion. The failed siege leaves Omberion catastrophically damaged. Blackcrag's defenders hold the city.

Secrets and Mysteries
Behind the public regency, Eremion sabotages Garrik's escape and uses Blackcrag as the base for his renewed search for Malverand's hidden artifacts. After Eremion's defeat, the population's loyalty leaves Garrik with the problem of trying to save or occupy a nation loyal to Eremion.
