Thalassai

Overview

Thalassai is the archon-led nation of Xolterra, the western island across the sea from Xalmyrra. It is a highly advanced, prosperous power with immense magical strength, aether and resonance traditions, windweavers, research centers, disciplined legions, and rule by regional archons. Chronasis is its capital, with Stella Aeterna and the Nexus Research Center at the center of national government and research.

Under Thalena Xenith, Thalassai grows from divided archon territories into a unified state. Modern Thalassai governs itself through regional archons and rejects divine rule. After Thalcoris joins Thalassai, the nation has six archon seats, one per region. The regions continue to govern independently under their archons. After Thalena's latest disappearance, Cassian leads from Chronasis alongside the archons, imperators, legati, chronarcs, and regional officials.

Geography and Regions

Thalassai lies on Xolterra, an island whose essence is pink and golden-yellow and where aether and resonance magic originate. Its sea routes connect it to Xalmyrra, Valrindor, and Ulzathir. Storms, darkness, and open water shape its borders and military planning.

The original core regions are Chronasis, Pyrenis, Terranova, Aetherion, and Thalmyris. Chronasis is the white-and-silver capital, Pyrenis is volcanic and coastal, Terranova is fertile farmland, Aetherion rises among high plateaus and clouds, and Thalmyris is the water-aligned port region for ships, waterways, and naval affairs. Thalcoris later becomes Thalassai's northern sixth region.

Society and Government

Thalassai is governed by archons. They meet at the Celestial Nexus to decide policy, confirm successors, assign regional duties, and respond to gates, gods, foreign powers, military threats, and exploration.

The core modern archons include Thalena or Cassian in Chronasis, Ignaros in Pyrenis, Calythos in Terranova, Zephyra in Aetherion, and Naryon in Thalmyris. Tazarin takes the sixth seat when Thalcoris joins. The archons are formally equal. Thalena directs national policy from Chronasis during her rule. After her disappearance, the archons, imperators, chronarcs, and Chronasis regional leaders nominate Cassian for the time-archon seat and then kneel to him as Thalassai's leader.

The Thalassai legions operate under civil archon rule. Imperators such as Aelius, Hadrian, and Marcellus lead the legions, with legati, centurions, and rank-and-file legion forces beneath them. The Thalassai Navy, led by Pontarius, handles exploration, sea defense, evacuation, and mapping.

Thalassai culture is ambitious, practical, and strongly regional. Pyrenis specializes in forging, cooking, military training, and volcanic ice cream; Terranova prizes farming and textiles; Aetherion uses air magic, flight, and skylorns; Chronasis gathers researchers, officials, soldiers, and powerful mages. The country rewards labor, magical excellence, invention, and public service, and Thalena openly declares that gods have no place ruling Thalassai.

Transport and Facilities

Thalassai's regions differ sharply in style. Chronasis has polished white roads, silver and violet grasses, waterways, domes, towers, Stella Aeterna, and the Nexus Research Center. Pyrenis uses volcanic stone, lava, forges, colosseums, and the Palace of Fire. Terranova is greener and agricultural, with the Palace of Earth carved into hills. Aetherion is set high among cliffs, plateaus, spires, and the Palace of Air.

Windweavers, watergliders, aether-powered ship lifts, dams, artifact-assisted waterways, advanced ships, resonance stones, celestial observatories, colosseums, and gates move travelers, guard borders and ports, and carry trade across Thalassai's regions. Specialized research facilities give researchers dedicated laboratories across the nation.

History

Thalassai's origins begin with Xalmyrran refugees and founders who escaped to Xolterra after Jorhan / Xol'Zahir defeated Aldred and began binding Xalmyrra in storms, darkness, and repeating cycles. Orin and Khoradyn founded Thalassai over five millennia ago; Orin became the first archon of Time and founded Chronasis. Khoradyn became the first archon of Earth. Thalassai history preserves the flight from Xalmyrra's darkness, the rejection of the gods by Orin and Khoradyn, and the AX year count that begins with the first settlers in Xolterra.

When Helena first reaches Thalassai in 2121 AX, the country is divided into self-governing regions and still carries Ozaith worship in its records. She studies Pyrenis, Terranova, Aetherion, Thalmyris, and Chronasis and secretly destroys Malverand records. By her return in 4332 AX, Ozaith worship has faded and the archon government remains, with Kairessa holding the archon of time seat.

Helena kills Kairessa and Pyrrhus, destroys the surviving Malverand-related record, and falsely blames Terranova for the Chronasis attack, driving the regions into the Internal Thalassai War. She then builds a hidden army from survivors, creates the ranks of imperator, legatus, centurion, and legion, and uses that army to end the Internal Thalassai War. After withdrawing from public view, she returns through Terranova as Thalena Xenith, is elected archon of time in 4836 AX, and declares herself archon of Space and Time.

Under Thalena, Thalassai flourishes. Chronasis houses national authority, Stella Aeterna and the Nexus Research Center expand, celestial observatories and colosseums are built, the legions become formidable, and windweaver technology develops. Thalassai also studies Xalmyrra, eastern storms, gates, gods, Thalcoris, the stars, the sun, and other planets.

The Thalassai invasion brings invading forces from Valrindor nations including Morozkaya, Haverloch, Brighthaven, and Ulzathir, with Ozaith's forces sailing toward Terranova. Thalassai survives the invasion, Ozaith and Pyrathalor are destroyed, and Cassian becomes archon of time after Thalena's disappearance. During the same transition, Thalcoris joins Thalassai's government and Tazarin takes the sixth archon seat.

In current events, Thalassai remains active under Cassian's leadership network. Its forces take Solvarria, then defend Pyrenis when Zain counterattacks from Ulzathir. Zain's counterattack on Pyrenis and Qadir's essence-bomb detonation devastate parts of the Pyrenis region. Pyrenis City survives, and Cassian, Hadrian, Zephyra, Nethira, Jin, Aelius, and allied leaders prepare to strike Zain and Ulzathir.

Secrets and Mysteries

Helena, later Thalena, deliberately breaks old Thalassai before rebuilding it: she destroys records, kills Kairessa and Pyrrhus, drains essence from the dead, drives the regions into the Internal Thalassai War, recruits the strongest survivors, and creates the hierarchy that becomes the Thalassai legions.
