Azarion is an air and divine mage who fights for Raphael alongside Eliona. He was Eremion's most trusted commander in the Malverand Empire and is his son, though Eremion concealed their parentage.
Appearance
Azarion is tall, with golden blond hair and teal eyes. He wears fitted silver armor in battle.
Magic
Azarion combines air and divine magic in powerful golden blasts, protects himself with divine shields and strengthens his body for close combat. His strongest blasts injure him through recoil and fracture the ground beneath him, requiring pauses between shots. He carries a Malverand heart and a god core from the second generation, whose power embeds in him without a separate god's voice.
History
Malverand
Eremion regarded Azarion as the greatest success of his breeding program. His mother ruled Thiravos and Theryssa. Eremion gave him a god core, which responded immediately. Azarion later came close to defeating him in a practice duel without using their shards.
During the attack on Isandriel's expedition off Qarezh, Azarion shielded Eremion's flagship against Kallion and fought Zero. He fled when Abraxas opened a rift over the battle.
Eremion also sent him, Koriel and Rhaeniel to hunt Isandriel and throw his heart into the ocean. Benedict's fleet bombarded them while rescuing Isandriel, and a tsunami swallowed the three mages. Eliona found Azarion's heart and revived him centuries later.
Raphael and Thalena
Azarion, Raphael and Eliona defeated the Oracles and seized the source in Zarephon. He investigated the source beneath the city's lake but could not identify its origin through the essence flowing from it.
He and Eliona later ambushed Thalena's companions near Varnhallow. Eliona concealed Azarion while he fired on Thalena, exploiting her need to protect the injured survivors. When Eliona's spellblaster disrupted the abyss, he continued attacking until Thalena took Deylin into the void. Virel and the others forced the pair to retreat. They then prepared to help defend Omberion from Garrik.
Relationships
- Eremion: His father and former commander trusted him to protect him in battle and trained alongside him.
- Eliona: She searched for him for a century and restored his life. Azarion fights beside her and supports her plans to rebuild Malverand, though he distrusts Raphael.
Azarion is an air and divine mage, a former commander of the Malverand Empire and the son of Eremion. He later fought for Raphael and became Gabriel's wielder. After turning against Gabriel, he and Eliona entered the service of the Malverand Intergalactic Empire as explorers on Vespera.
Appearance
Azarion is tall and muscular, with golden blond hair and teal eyes. During his service to Raphael, he wore fitted silver armor beneath white robes.
Personality
Azarion is impatient and eager to fight. He openly challenged Raphael's decisions and mocked his erratic behavior. He wanted a peaceful life with Eliona, though he also feared finding that life boring. He remained loyal to her even when he no longer trusted Raphael.
Magic
Azarion uses air magic for flight and divine magic for shields, healing and physical enchantments. He combines the two in golden blasts of compressed air.
He developed a weak form of balance magic and incorporated it into his air blasts. His incomplete unmaking fails to disconnect essence fully, causing it to explode instead. The recoil from his strongest blasts damages his body and fractures the ground beneath him, forcing pauses between attacks.
History
Malverand and drowning
Eremion concealed Azarion's parentage and regarded him as the greatest success of his breeding program. His mother was an air mage who ruled Thiravos and Theryssa. Eremion made him his most trusted commander, implanted a Malverand heart in him and gave him a god core from the second generation. The core responded immediately and embedded its power in him without a separate god's voice. Even without using their shards, Azarion came close to defeating Eremion in a practice duel.
During the attack on Isandriel's expedition off Qarezh, Azarion shielded Eremion's flagship against Kallion and fought Zero. He fled when Abraxas opened a rift over the battle. Eremion also sent him, Koriel and Rhaeniel to hunt Isandriel and dispose of his heart in the ocean.
Benedict's fleet bombarded the three mages while rescuing Isandriel. A tsunami overtook them. Azarion's heart repeatedly restored his body as he drowned, until the pressure crushed him beyond recovery. Eliona found his heart and revived him centuries later.
Raphael and the Order
Azarion joined Raphael and Eliona in their attempt to restore Malverand. He trained with them for centuries and helped defeat the Oracles in Zarephon, giving Rahmavir control of the source. At Raphael's request, he also tried to reach the source beneath its lake, despite his fear of drowning.
He and Eliona ambushed Thalena's companions near Varnhallow, using their injuries to restrict her attacks. Eliona concealed his position while he bombarded Thalena with air blasts. When Eliona's spellblaster disrupted the abyss, he continued attacking until Thalena took Deylin into the void. Virel and the others forced the pair to retreat.
After the ancient Order returned, Azarion attacked Kaldaryn from skyships equipped to fire his blasts and pursued Kaelion as he escaped. His attacks severed Splin's wing. Isrynn destroyed the pursuing ships at the cost of her life, but Azarion and Eliona continued the chase until Haverloch's mages intervened. During their retreat, Eira told him that Eremion was his father.
Azarion later fought Eira in the Plains of Eternity. Eliona interrupted the battle to ask the Order to close the source. Azarion and Eliona agreed to help kill Raphael in exchange for being allowed to live in Thalassai. By then, Azarion had exhausted his god core, as Gabriel had instructed.
While Eira, Kaelion and Xarion descended to the source, Alistair, disguised as Alice, detonated devices inside the mountain. Eliona shielded Azarion and carried him out of the explosion. Gabriel publicly credited them with killing the three mages. Believing the Order would hunt them for the disaster, they resumed fighting for Raphael.
Gabriel and the hurricane
Gabriel offered Azarion a pact to develop his balance magic and defeat their remaining enemies. Azarion accepted, gaining a shard shaped like a hurricane. He reinforced Cyndarel's defenses while Aldar enclosed the city in darkness, then escaped with Raphael's forces. Fighting Virel and Maric outside the city, he summoned a hurricane and lost control of it. The storm continued across Valrindor and killed millions. After Gabriel found Eliona, Azarion carried her and Ravira away from the storm while healing Eliona. He set out to warn the cities in its path and reached Therendros.
After Raphael's death, Gabriel directed Azarion and the remaining army toward Ishtanûr within the eye of a second hurricane. Jin, Maric and Garrik broke into the storm, and Alistair destroyed Azarion's skyship before fighting him directly. Kaelion, Eira and Xarion then returned from the intergalactic empire, and Kaelion burned away much of the hurricane.
Eira called on Azarion to stop. He drew an immense amount of essence from Gabriel and severed his own shard hand. Cassian intercepted it and began unmaking the god. When Gabriel's body started forming again, Azarion returned and joined Eira and Garrik in unmaking him. The blast left Azarion unconscious, and Eira protected him from being killed afterward.
Vespera
Azarion surrendered his Malverand heart to Thalena and provided information about Rahmavir and Alice. While awaiting resettlement, he worked as a healer in Chronasis.
Thalena then sent him and Eliona through the void to the intergalactic empire. Mike assigned them to study Vespera's life, map the planet and locate his black boxes. In return, they could choose a monitored place within the empire where they could live in peace.
Relationships
- Eremion: His father and former commander concealed their relationship from him. Azarion learned the truth from Eira, whose account of Eremion's kindness differed from the man he had known.
- Eliona: She revived him, trained and fought beside him for centuries, and became his lover. He chose to follow her rather than Raphael and remained with her after they left Valrindor.
- Gabriel: Azarion accepted the god's pact for greater power and control of his unmaking. He ultimately turned against Gabriel and helped destroy him.
