Varnhallow lies north of the Navan Sea. Its attacks on Skarnheim use machines and magical constructs. The interior can be seen from outside, but Nahm cannot detect essence within it. Virel has been unable to remember his attempts to enter.

Within the anomaly, Varnhallow contained cities with distinct settings. Luminaris stood beside a river and forest at the edge of a cold desert. A high wall of brown stone protected it from the desert winds, while dark iron and glass buildings rose above illuminated streets. Its factories produced constructs for transport and airship fleets.
Lysaraine stood beside the Navan Sea. Fine stone roads connected it to the forest, and carts and wagons moved without animals or mages guiding them. Halcyra lay near the anomaly’s eastern edge, surrounded by desert dunes.
Astralynne was the capital. Its skyship docks received vessels from across Varnhallow, and its government district contained wide streets, residential blocks, squares and massive buildings. The Grand Court was a colossal tournament arena. Constructs cleaned the streets and hauled goods through the city.
Rule
Eltaru ruled through the divine patriarchs, who governed individual cities and served as administrators and elite combat mages. Tournaments at the Grand Court offered mages a route into their ranks. Wilfred governed Luminaris before Thalion succeeded him. Benedict was Astralem’s patriarch.
Temporal boundary
A blue temporal barrier extended across the horizon around Varnhallow. Ordinary attempts to cross it failed. Deylin opened a passage by synchronizing the anomaly while Vianna and Anshar destabilized a small section with intense heat. The expedition passed through, but its members arrived in different places and periods within the nation.
Timerifts also opened inside Varnhallow, tearing pieces from buildings and destabilizing the country.

Creation and army
As Malverand broke apart, Michael and Sigvariel gathered their strongest followers and withdrew east of Astralem. With Horol’Khai and temporal magic, they created Varnhallow’s anomaly to prepare an army for Isandriel. Its purpose was to help him end the guardians’ destructive rule.

Michael prepared to release the spell and send the army out of Varnhallow. At the Grand Court, Thalion wore his golden mask as a decoy while Michael worked out of sight. Kren, Svanhild, Ivan and Maia attacked the masked Thalion; Aelius, Zayren and Benedict defended him.
As the anomaly broke apart, Michael drained essence from the assembled citizens to sustain his magic. People aged, withered and disintegrated, while timerifts tore through the capital. Thalion’s skyship armada departed, carrying patriarchs, soldiers and civilians. Deylin synchronized another exit for his companions. The barrier vanished, leaving empty forests, hills and plains where Varnhallow had stood.

An older province of Malverand also bore the name Varnhallow. Its capital moved from Astralynne to Astralem after Uriandel’s forces devastated Astralynne. When Thalion’s armada emerged from the anomaly, Isandriel received it at the older Astralem. Thalion declared the province independent as Skarnheim and renamed its capital Rimvold.

As Malverand broke apart, Michael developed a prototype shard with temporal essence. He sought out temporal mages to contribute to it, many of whom were consumed by the shard, and altered it so that a temporal mage would claim it. Sigvariel became its wielder and named the god within Horol’Khai.
