Gates

artifacttechnologygates

Overview

Gates are massive portals used to travel through the void between distant regions, worlds, and versions of Valrindor. They are half-circle frames of metal, stone, or mixed materials. The Chronasis gate, Earth's buried gate, and the Thiravos-Theryssa island gates have eleven-symbol or eleven-spell frames; straight-order activation produces a blue vortex that settles into black void.

Gate rooms often include cables, essence lights, cores, ropes, scanners, operators, or consoles because activation draws heavy power and requires careful monitoring. Confirmed gates stand in or near Aethrendar, Chronasis, Irrathis, Lythenmere Lake, Atraxis Prime, Vireen, Earth, Pelagos, and Pelagia.

Operation

Opening a gate requires both power and a matching activation method. Gates can draw on essence, essence cores, essence towers, god essence, machinery, cables, symbol sequences, or trained operators. Gate activators temporarily open gates by releasing stored spells. Ozaith's Earth gate uses lightning and electricity because Earth lacks magic and essence.

Gates open into the void for travel. Open-void gates lead directly into the void and require navigation by light, tether, signature, activator, or guide. Sequence-controlled gates send travelers from one gate directly to another through the void.

Gate Activation

Gate activation opens a dormant gate for travel. An activated gate can expose the open void, open a controlled path between gates, or release a stored activation spell that opens a temporary passage. The method depends on available power, the gate frame, and whether the gate opens into the void or toward a paired destination.

Cassian channels essence through Nexus Research Center equipment to open the Chronasis gate as attached devices and the gate's eleven symbols light in sequence. Renneth can channel essence through cores and a gate frame. One northern attempt requires a far-side operator or power source because he lacks enough essence to activate a gate alone. Thiravos and Theryssa rely on essence towers, operators, and symbol sequences; Malverand and Vireen gate projects use schematics, cables, god cores, and ship power; and Earth's gate uses lightning because the world lacks magic and essence.

Activation consumes heavy power and can drain the mage, device, or power source opening the gate. Gate-to-gate travel requires another gate, and underpowered activations can require another operator or a far-side power source. A direct activation may open into the void. Controlled sequences can create white passages through the void.

Gate Activator

Gate activators are portable spell containers that temporarily open or activate gates for void travel. Users usually break or crush the cylinder or metallic device, releasing stored essence as a gate-opening spell. The devices can open a nearby gate or create a visible exit light from within the void. Users still need a guide, tether, light, signature, or paired route for navigation.

Activators are single-use, scarce, and difficult to make because each one takes months and tremendous stored essence. One activator design teleports the user to a gate and activates it; another only activates the gate. A destroyed or unusable gate can prevent an activator from working.

Amos and Jareth develop the Xalmyrran activators after decades of reverse-engineering gates. They use Belanor's temporal blinking as the model for spell containers that burst open, release stored essence, and temporarily activate nearby gates. Belanor and the atraxi create the gate activator spell; Hrzai secretly copies the spell from them. Atraxi use activators for gate travel across Atraxis Prime, Valrindor, Chronasis, and Rimvold, where their availability can decide escapes, rescues, and survival inside the void.

Travel through a gate is hazardous. Users may need a guide, a tether, a visible light, a sensed signature, or a paired destination. Travelers stranded too long in the void can become hollow or unstable, and a damaged gate's matter stabilizer can fail during crossing. The island gates of Thiravos and Theryssa use sequences to send travelers from one gate directly to another and avoid open void navigation.

Builders and History

Arcanis prepares gate projects for the Malverand Empire, including the Vireen gate project. The Aethrendar Gate becomes the Valrindor-side route used by Michael, Eremion, Barachiel, and later Arcanis. Barachiel's failed crossing through the Aethrendar Gate removes Malverand's emperor from the imperial center.

The atraxi line of gate technology develops through Amos, Jareth, Jorhan, and Belanor. Their history follows a bootstrap loop in which later gate schematics are sent back toward the ancient Atraxis system. The atraxi build gates in their own system from received schematics, manufacture activators, and use the gates to survive, escape, or pursue enemies through the void.

The gate network later extends into Thalassai, Thiravos-Theryssa, and Earth. Thalassai builds the Nexus Research Center around the Chronasis gate. Thiravos and Theryssa preserve Malverand-derived gate technology and adapt sequence-based activation for elite travel between island cities. Ozaith and Thalion construct a lightning-powered gate beneath a pyramid on Earth.

Military and Travel Uses

Gate control can decide military movement, rescues, evacuations, and expeditions. Gates let enemies abduct Eira, let travelers move between distant regions, let Thalena's group wait near Chronasis after years in the void, and allow researchers in the Malverand Intergalactic Empire to probe routes between worlds. Destroying a gate can cut off a route, as with the Aethrendar Gate and the Earth gate.

Secrets and Mysteries

Gate travel sends Barachiel into the failed Aethrendar crossing, carries the atraxi flight, creates Xalmyrra's cycles, strands Thalena's group in the void, and lets later Malverand Intergalactic Empire researchers investigate the same network. Barachiel's transit through the Aethrendar Gate, Eira's Vireen and Earth interventions, and the destruction of individual gates determine which routes stay open between worlds.
