Windweaver

Overview

Windweavers are Thalassai flying vessels with older sail-driven designs and newer essence-engine models, still casually called air balloons after their earliest designs. Thalassai uses them alongside airships, skyships, and vector voyagers.

Design

Standard windweavers are large flying ships with polished dark-wood hulls, skylorn-hide sails, decks, cabins, and crews. Their frames combine wood, ultralight metals, sail systems, mage expertise, and aether-artifact engineering. Air mages can feed wind into the sails, and windweavers use docks and landing platforms in places such as Chronasis, Aetherion, Pyrenis, and Stella Aeterna.

Newer models move beyond the older sail profile. Jareth's white-and-violet semi-metallic prototype leads into fast models with glowing engines, hull-integrated essence storage, and visible aether artifacts; one fast windweaver stores essence throughout its cores, hull, and engine. These models are fast enough to be compared with trains and engine-driven skyships.

Development

The Nexus Research Center develops early air balloons into sleek aether-magic and sail-powered vessels during Thalena's rule. Cyrena researches upgrades, Jareth builds later prototypes and expands windweaver docks, and Thalena's train designs draw on windweaver shapes and propulsion knowledge.

Thalassai exports or loans older windweavers beyond its own cities. Eira, Kaelion, and Jin Leiyun use one for travel across Valrindor after Astryx leaves it with them, Xalmyrra receives older versions for coastal defense, and Cassian sends windweavers across the opened eastern ocean to chart routes toward Haverloch and Ulzathir.

Uses and Limits

Windweavers give Thalassai quick movement where gates are unsafe, unavailable, or too limited. They carry chronarcs, archons, diplomats, soldiers, supplies, mapmakers, mages, and essence cores; they also patrol coasts, escort foreign aircraft, observe enemy territory, and coordinate strike routes. Zephyra uses them for Aetherion travel and high-altitude travel, and Hadrian coordinates from a fast windweaver during the Thalassai takeover of Solvarria.

Their performance depends on model, crew, magic, and supplies. Older sail-driven versions need sail handling and air mages, while newer models rely more heavily on engine systems. They can fly high and cross oceans, but storms, ocean barriers, lack of supplies, enemy blasts, and extreme altitude still constrain them.
