Overview
Thalmyris is a southeastern port city of Thalassai and the water-aligned region governed by its archon of water. Thalassai counts it among the original five core regions, and Naryon is its modern archon. Its harbor, water mages, scholars, and ships handle sea routes, maritime reconnaissance, training, and contact across the eastern storms. Khoradyn founded Thalmyris.
City and Region
Thalmyris spreads along a pale shoreline, with terraced homes rising against rolling hills and glistening lakes outside the city. Its harbor and docks berth large ships, and blue-sailed Thalmyris trading vessels travel along nearby coasts and operate in defended waters around Pyrenis.
Roads, rivers, ships, windweavers, and trains connect Thalmyris to the rest of Thalassai. A river leads between Chronasis and Thalmyris, an elegant stone road connects Pyrenis, Thalmyris, and Chronasis, and a train route passes through Thalmyris before entering the undersea crossing toward Velundra and Xalmyrra.
Society and Landmarks
Thalmyris uses water magic, scholarship, sea travel, and disciplined coastal life. Local mages ride waves, sailors operate magically assisted boats, and scholars and scribes preserve travelers' accounts in the city.
Palace of Water
The Palace of Water is Thalmyris's water-aligned palace and one of the city's landmarks. It has flowing fountains, open courtyards, terraces, aqueducts, stone arches, long hallways, a library, guest quarters, and water-aligned training spaces.
Naryon teaches Jin water magic there after Jin crosses the storms into Thalassai, and Jin uses the palace library during his Thalmyris stay. Later, Lunorax brings Kaelion and Splin to Thalmyris so Kaelion can receive a boat, crew, and sailing instruction; they spend the night in the palace guest area before leaving from the docks.
The port provides ships, crews, and sailing instruction for long-distance voyages.
History
During Helena's early years in Thalassai, she studies and visits Thalmyris. She destroys Malverand-related records and older history. In the Internal Thalassai War, Pyrenis ships destroy Thalmyris's ports, and Helena later drowns an Aetherion town in a staged attack that shifts suspicion toward Thalmyris and its water mages.
Thalmyris is later rebuilt for port traffic and water-mage training. Pontarius holds the archon of water seat before becoming admiral, and Naryon succeeds him as the current archon of Thalmyris. A storm near the busy port sinks the ship carrying Zephyra's parents, leading Thalena to adopt her.
Jin Leiyun reaches Thalmyris after crossing the storms from Xalmyrra under Tianlei's protection. Naryon receives him at the harbor, hosts him in the Palace of Water, trains him in water magic, and has Thalassai's scholars and scribes record his stories. Jin also writes corrected histories during his stay, including material about Thalassai's founding.
Sea Routes and Ships
Thalmyris patrols Thalassai's eastern and southern waters. Naryon and Pontarius monitor the eastern storms and southern darkness, report to the archons at the Celestial Nexus, and prepare for the day a safe passage toward Xalmyrra opens. When the darkness surges again, Thalmyris and Pyrenis come under threat; after the damage, Cassian orders repairs in Thalmyris and asks for more large ships to be built.
During the defense of Pyrenis against Zain, blue-sailed Thalmyris ships are still active inside the defended waters, and Qadir's essence-bomb detonation beyond Pyrenis is strong enough for its remnants to be felt as far as Thalmyris.
