Isaac, also known as Isaac the Unmaker, is a divine mage and shard wielder from Durakarn. He taught Vianna Kairo in Radiance Prime and helped remove Alistair Voss from Brighthaven. He later supplied ships and troops for the invasion of Thalassai.

Appearance

Isaac has pale gray eyes and a youthful appearance despite his long life. He wears plain gray robes.

Personality

Isaac remains calm in danger and rarely shows the distress felt by those around him. He is a harsh teacher, repeatedly injuring Vianna and healing her before continuing their lessons. He prefers to avoid unnecessary deaths when removing Brighthaven's government.

Magic

Isaac uses divine magic to heal severe injuries and raise golden shields around ships. His unmaking disintegrates bodies and dissolves powerful spells.

Vianna and Brighthaven

Isaac discovered Vianna as a child and protected her family. When she entered school in Radiance Prime, she joined his class for unusual magic. He gave her extra lessons, forcing her to awaken her fire and ice magic through repeated combat and healing.

Isaac, Vianna and Pyrathalor killed the defenders of the Spire of Triumvirate, and Vianna killed Voss. The new triarch agreed to honor Isaac's promise to Morozkaya.

The invasion of Thalassai

Isaac brought Brighthaven's construct fleet and elite soldiers to the alliance preparing to invade Thalassai. He accompanied his former student Virel and the force sent through the southern darkness to Chronasis while the fleet attacked Pyrenis.

During the battle, he healed the wounded, including Simon after his arm was severed. He unmade Thalena's singularity and remained standing while the others struggled to withstand its explosion. When the battle ended and the asteroid descended, he guided the survivors back to their ships.

On the return journey, he suggested asking Skarnheim or Kaldaryn to negotiate with the Thalassai. Jorhan's defeat had also freed Durakarn from the darkness. Isaac planned to visit his homeland before returning to Brighthaven, relieved that its people were connected to the world again.

In 2082 AX, Michael brought him to Astralem and explained Barachiel's final command: if Malverand could no longer be governed, Isandriel had to end the guardians. Michael and Sigvariel then left to prepare an army through temporal magic. Isandriel waited outside the resulting boundary until Thalion's fleet arrived.

The war against the guardians

Isandriel joined Thalion and the army that had been displaced into Malverand's past. He helped them establish their position in Rimvold and supplied knowledge of the guardians, their lands and their rivalries.

While escorting Viviana, Aurelia and Gren toward Ulzathir, he offered Viviana the burning frost crystal. She channeled essence into it with Thalor, awakening him as Pyrathalor. The eruption of fire and frost destroyed much of Radiance Prime. Isandriel caught Viviana and shielded the group, then took them aboard a surviving skyship. Alistair blamed him for bringing the disaster upon Brighthaven and forbade him to return. Isandriel accepted the ban and brought Pyrathalor to Kyranthos.

He later took Thalion to Maraveth under the pretense of serving Sigvariel. While Thalion kept Raphael occupied with battle plans, Isandriel stole artifacts from the Malverand vault. He withheld their use until suitable wielders could be found, since claiming them could kill an unprepared mage.

At Jazarel, he fought alongside Thalion and Ignatius against Eremion and Raphael. The reversal spell carried by Helena repeatedly reset the battle when she, Thalion or Zero died. Thalion eventually carried Isandriel to Thamrielle's position, where he could shield the others and counter her power. After Mia died, Thalion nearly beat Thamrielle to death. Isandriel stopped him and preserved her because they needed her knowledge of Abraxas and the Plains of Eternity.

He then unmade the defeated Uriandel and Jeremiah. Eremion and Raphael escaped. Isandriel claimed responsibility for the wave that had destroyed Jazarel, protecting Thalion's identity and becoming known as Isandriel the Unmaker.

Before leaving on an expedition, he gave Thalion two god cores without resident gods and an empty star prototype intended for Helena. He warned that the prototype would consume her essence and must be kept from her until she was strong enough.

The expedition and leadership of the Order

Thalion entrusted Isandriel with the Order's future leadership, the destruction of Malverand's surviving records and the recruitment of capable mages. Isandriel accepted and sailed toward Myrravel with Thamrielle and the expedition sent to recover Viviana and Gren.

Thamrielle's god, Kharvos, persuaded her to seize the source. Isandriel tried to stop her, but her power and the flowing source made unmaking difficult. He brought her close to death before Abraxas intervened, severed his shard hand, killed Thamrielle and took the source. Without Tal'Massar, Isandriel was left badly injured and unable to restore the connection himself.

Tal'Massar, Viviana, Gren and Drashir found him before the lava reached his body. Benedict's fleet rescued them from a tsunami and the approaching enemies. By the time he boarded the skyship, his hand was restored and Tal'Massar had rejoined him. After the survivors returned to Rimvold, Isandriel left to carry out Thalion's remaining orders.

He later recruited Garrik and Astrid into the Order, tasking Garrik with preparing forces against Eremion. He gave Garrik the last remaining god core, which strengthened his earth and divine magic without a resident god. He also trained Simon in Haverloch and continued removing the remnants of Malverand.

Thalena and the return to Brighthaven

In 3252 AX, Isandriel met Helena again during the war against Zharrek's shapers in Laizhou. Now using the name Isaac, he trained her and fought alongside her. After the war, they traveled across Valrindor for eight centuries, intervening in conflicts and searching for Thalion. They also searched unsuccessfully for Eremion's and Raphael's Malverand hearts. Their shared travels became part of the legend of the Wanderer of Valrindor.

Hrzai later asked him to find and protect Vianna. In Radiance Prime, he taught her at school and trained her after class. He repeatedly injured and healed her, forcing her to awaken her fire and ice magic. He entered her in the school tournament to make her name widely known and deter Alistair Voss from removing her as supposed proof of Pyrathalor's reincarnation.

When Damian died, Isaac helped Vianna's family escape Brighthaven in a construct boat, shielding them against the island's weapons before returning to prevent civil war. He later sought Morozkaya's aid in exchange for Brighthaven's military support and trade. His allies disabled the southern construct defenses, allowing him, Vianna and Pyrathalor to enter the Spire of Triumvirate. They killed its defenders, and Vianna killed Alistair Voss.

Isaac fulfilled the agreement by providing Brighthaven's fleet and elite troops for the invasion of Thalassai. He accompanied Virel's force to Chronasis, healed the wounded and unmade Thalena's singularity. After the battle, he brought the survivors back to their ships. Jorhan's defeat in Xalmyrra freed Durakarn from the darkness, allowing Isaac to visit his former homeland again.

Varnhallow and his surviving heart

Isaac joined Deylin's mission to Varnhallow. He shielded Arcanis Village while Vianna and Anshar heated the temporal barrier and Deylin synchronized it, then entered Varnhallow ahead of Vianna. His connection to Tal'Massar was lost inside. He divided the travelers so that the people needed in Malverand's history would reach the past while the others returned to their own time.

After the survivors emerged, Azarion and Eliona attacked near Arcanis Village. Isaac had not fully reattuned to Tal'Massar and was killed before he could draw on the god's power. Thalena recovered his Malverand heart. Garrik took over the Order, following Isaac's instruction that he lead if Isaac disappeared.

After Thalena returned from the void, she sought to revive Isandriel. Eliona took his heart to the Nexus Research Center, where Jareth and Cyrena studied it. A trace of essence remained, but the heart stayed dormant and did not respond to their attempts at restoration. Zayren and Zephyra searched Durakarn for Tal'Massar without finding him.

Relationships

• Tal'Massar: His god and closest companion. Tal'Massar guided him throughout his long life and kept him from losing himself as his memories faded. They could reunite after the loss of his shard hand, but Tal'Massar remained absent after the Varnhallow ambush.
• Barachiel, Michael and Raphael: Barachiel created him to end the guardians if they could no longer govern, while Michael and Raphael raised him. He continued obeying Barachiel's command after the emperor disappeared, eventually turning against the guardians Raphael sought to preserve.
• Thalion: His commander and close friend. They fought to end the guardians, and Thalion trusted him with the Order's future. Isandriel preserved Thalion's anonymity by accepting blame for Jazarel's destruction.
• Thalena: His student, traveling companion and close friend. They spent eight centuries together, and he understood the history and secrets she kept from her younger companions. She recovered his heart and sought his restoration after his death.
• Thamrielle: His companion during the guardians' decline. He kept her alive after Jazarel and tried to stop her from seizing the source. Abraxas killed her while Isandriel was fighting her.
• Vianna: His student and Hrzai's chosen charge. His harsh training protected her from Alistair Voss, and he later sought her aid to remove Voss from Brighthaven.
• Nerissa, Lucilla and Garrik: Nerissa was the mother of his daughter Lucilla. He asked her to keep his fatherhood secret and checked that she protected Thiravos and Theryssa. Garrik was his grandson, an Order recruit, a recipient of his last god core and his chosen successor.
