Overview
Teryndal, Soltheris, Erenmyr, and Keldara are the four great nations of Xalmyrra. Teryndal dominates much of southwestern Xalmyrra. Its capital, Irrathis, houses Teryndal's Assembly, the Imperial Institute, and the Xalmyrran Council, so much of Xalmyrra's cross-national government, defense planning, and responses to the darkness runs through Teryndalan institutions.
The nation is led by a high arbiter through Teryndal's Assembly. Xoltan holds the office when the atraxi arrive in Irrathis, Xandor is a later high arbiter and senior Assembly official, and Xarion rises to the office with Cassian at his side. After Xarion returns from his displacement and gives up the office, Xandor manages the Assembly. Xandor prepares to retire, and Naryon enters the succession discussions.
Geography
Teryndal contains warm farmlands, rolling hills, forests, rivers, repaired towns, roads, rail routes, docks, and airship routes. Soltheris lies east along roads and rail routes through Teryndal, Erenmyr extends to the north, and Keldara lies northeast. The River Selvryn runs through Teryndal and Irrathis, and southern approaches connect toward Velundra, Lythenmere Lake, and the Land of Darkness.
Teryndal's settled and strategic geography includes Irrathis, Velundra, Fyrhaven, Brondoris, Aemrith, Nythenfall Apex, Lake Velisyth, Lythenmere Lake, and the River Selvryn. A ship flag bears Teryndal's insignia, a bright yellow scale representing balance.
River Selvryn
River Selvryn is a Teryndalan river that runs through Irrathis and north toward Fyrhaven. Branches of the river pass through Irrathis, where water and earth mages shape the waterways into city channels and sanitation routes.
Travelers can take boats along the river from Irrathis toward Fyrhaven before continuing overland toward Lake Velisyth. Aldar, Brynor, and Jin cross or pass over it during travel through Teryndal, and Eira and Lirien take a boat upriver toward Fyrhaven. During the cataclysm attack on Irrathis, the river overflows and tears through the lower districts with widening currents and debris.
Society and City Services
Teryndal is politically active, mage-heavy, and administration-heavy. Its public life runs through the Assembly, the council seat in Irrathis, the Adventurers' Guild, mage rankings, tournaments, coin administration, flood response, darkness defense, and army musters. Its farms use enchanted plows and frosthorn oxen. Its towns and cities rely on essence lamps, roads, airships, trains, ships, waterways, and repaired public services.
Cassian becomes famous across the nation as a healer, Hero of the People, and the youngest mage in history to receive level-nine recognition. Renneth becomes a Teryndalan citizen after living in the Adventurers' Guild. Aldar, Brynor, Mirael, Renneth, Maric, and Sarine are based in Irrathis's council, Assembly, and political districts.
Government and Power
The high arbiter leads Teryndal's national government from the Assembly in Irrathis. The office can command officials, mages, soldiers, national policy, army musters, and mage deployments. Teryndal's government sits beside the Xalmyrran Council, which serves all four nations and is based in Irrathis because of Teryndal's position between Soltheris, Erenmyr, and Keldara and its political neutrality.
Because these offices sit in Irrathis, Xarion can mobilize Teryndal's forces, demand that Aurion surrender at the Soltheris border, and propose that Teryndal govern Soltheris during the confrontation after Aurion offers Soltheris-built orreries to the other nations. Aldar and the council also direct Xalmyrran defense through Irrathis-based institutions that serve all four nations.
History
When the atraxi first reach Xalmyrra, they descend on Irrathis in Teryndal. Xoltan Morvayne, then high arbiter, formally welcomes them. Aldred Behn and the Xalmyrran Council offer sanctuary. Atraxi settle in Irrathis, and Teryndal locals adopt the atraxi tongue; that language later spreads across the four nations as Xalmyrran.
Armies from Teryndal, Soltheris, Erenmyr, and Keldara clash in the War of Scars before Thalena's intervention ends the War of Scars. In later cycles, Soltheris guards the Land of Darkness border from Dravemir. Teryndal's council and Assembly supply settlements, arrange defenses, and keep routes open across Xalmyrra.
Xarion becomes high arbiter with Cassian at his side. Council missions, tournaments, military preparations, and responses to the Land of Darkness run through Teryndal's institutions. When Aurion's orreries and Soltheris politics trigger the Teryndal-Soltheris Battle, Xarion marches Teryndal's forces and allied mages to the border; the Teryndal-Soltheris Battle ends when Eira's uncontrolled darkness consumes much of the gathered armies.
After the cataclysm and Eira's uncontrolled darkness at the border, Teryndal repairs its roads, harbor, fields, villages, towns, and parts of Irrathis. It continues to send mages, officials, adventurers, airships, and political leaders into Xalmyrran defense missions and Thalassai diplomacy. Later, Xarion no longer holds the high-arbiter office. Xandor manages the Assembly and prepares to retire, and Naryon enters the succession discussions.
