Overview
In Xalmyrra, Sariel lives as Silas Kaine. Sariel is the former prince of the Malverand Empire, and he later lives as Malcairn, the ancient essence shaper who survived into Shroudvale. He is the son of Barachiel and Thamrielle, a failed claimant to the spiral shards, and the wielder bound to Zal'therak. Through each phase of that long life, he works from the shadows against the darkness, first through old Malverand survival plans and later through Aldar's council network.
History
Sariel is Barachiel and Thamrielle's son and the future heir of Malverand. After Barachiel vanished through the Aethrendar Gate, the spiral shard split in two and Sariel was too young to replace him. The guardians later prepared him to wield the shards. The attempt failed, and his Malverand heart helped stabilize him after the backlash. Decades later, he took both shard pieces and brought them to Xalmyrra, where he split them apart and asked Hrzai to guard the region. His failed succession and the loss of the shards become a lasting source of guilt. Malverand's collapse unfolds through Barachiel's disappearance, the failed shard succession, the guardians' later failures, and the advancing darkness.
During Helena Hyperion's youth in Ishtanûr, Sariel teaches council children about Malverand and becomes the only steady friend she has there. When Alistair tries to take her away, Sariel intervenes, kills him, and leaves the city with Helena. They live near Axanaxa, where Sariel raises her for a time, teaches her temporal magic, and gives Helena her first safe home. After the Order's campaign to remove Malverand's surviving guardians, he considers returning to Maraveth as Malcairn of Malverand.
As Malcairn, he researches a way for Malverand's remnants to survive the advancing darkness. He develops the essence-infusion process with Zharrek and Zal'therak; the process creates the first essence shapers before he rejects Zharrek's decision to imprison Zal'therak and force the transformation across the remaining population. After freeing Zal'therak and taking the god's diamond-like shard, Malcairn leaves Shroudvale through the edge of the void.
Malcairn travels through Valrindor under Zal'therak's guidance, warns Khoradyn and Garrik about Hengvaris, and reaches Varentis in Keldara. There Durvek teaches him Keldaran language and customs, he lives near Rhalyn, spars with Feryon, creates the black orbs, and becomes Silas Kaine of Keldara. He then enters Irrathis and offers his service to Aldar Rehn.
As Silas, he serves Aldar from the shadows; Aldar sends him to eliminate dangers and monitor sensitive missions. He escorts Eira through the edge of the void to reach Aurion, shadows the darkness expedition, fights beside Deylin against Jorhan's agents, and later travels with Eira and Lythariel across Valrindor. He joins Sigurd, Jin, Thalena, Lunorax, and Horol'Khai inside the void for the timerift plan. During the Thalassai invasion, he carries Aelius and Arinella through the void, supplies essence cores, shields allies, and raises a cosmic barrier over Chronasis. In the Malverand Intergalactic Empire, Silas and Zal'therak are among the capsule-bound companions kept secure during the return-home work.
Abilities
Silas's own magic is cosmic, and he also knows temporal magic. He uses cosmic barriers, beams, missiles, body glyphs, and city-scale defenses. His temporal skill lets him bend time around attacks and reinforce high-speed movement. Helena and Thalena surpass him in temporal power.
Zal'therak gives him access to veils, illusions, and travel along the edge of the void. Silas can hide himself and others, create false bodies and replicas, move beneath or alongside Valrindor through void-adjacent space, carry companions, and reach familiar places quickly. He can also open breaches from the void with powerful allies.
His essence-shaper body is ash-gray and cracked, with glowing essence veins beneath the skin. Veils let him pass as a human, usually as a dark, hooded, almost flawless man. His shaper physiology gives him deep essence reserves. He depends heavily on Zal'therak's shard for his later void and veil work.
Black Orbs
Silas creates black orbs in Varentis with Zal'therak's guidance. Each orb is a small dark call-link carrying a filament keyed to Silas. A holder can channel magic or essence into the orb to summon him.
Eira receives one before Silas sends her toward Aurion, and Aldar carries at least one in his robes. The orbs can fail when Silas is too far away or no longer reachable from Xalmyrra.
