Horol’Khai is the missing temporal god of Skarnheim and the god of Sigurd. Her essence is held in the blue crystal worn by Eltaru in Varnhallow.
History
Hrzai gave Horol’Khai The Eleven Stories of Old, which Thalena wrote in Xalmyrra. Sigurd placed the book in Skarnheim's vaults. Horol’Khai later offered him a solution to the attacks from Varnhallow, but as he approached it, he experienced a flash and found himself outside again. He had not seen her for almost five centuries when he spoke to Virel. He could not remember how he had become her wielder.
Thalena suspected that Horol’Khai had added the book's final chapter and its temporal spell as a warning. Breaking that spell connected Thalena to an entity in the void.
Relationships
- Sigurd: Her wielder. He wanted to help her but did not know where she was or how to reach her.
- Hrzai: Gave her Thalena's book to take out of Xalmyrra.
Horol’Khai was a temporal deity of Skarnheim and the god of Sigurd. Michael created her to guide the people sent through timerifts into Varnhallow. She helped maintain Varnhallow's temporal bubble and later supplied Lunorax with her remaining power to move Thalena's group through time inside the void.
Appearance
Horol’Khai appeared as a hollow humanoid form made of blue particles, without hair or facial features. Her shape split, froze and reformed, sometimes gathering into hourglass shapes. While sealed in Michael's blue crystal, she could be seen and heard only by people with temporal magic.
Magic
Horol’Khai experienced different times together rather than following their sequence. She sometimes mistook past events for recent ones and interrupted her own speech as her body stopped moving. She saw Varnhallow's end and knew that Eira would live beyond it.
Michael kept Horol’Khai sealed in a crystal because her unrestricted temporal magic endangered the world. She continuously maintained Varnhallow's bubble, with Michael and Sigvariel taking over when she needed to speak to visitors. She also guided travellers through timerifts and supplied Lunorax with the power to move Thalena's group through time inside the void.
History
The Eleven Stories of Old
Hrzai gave Horol’Khai The Eleven Stories of Old, written by Thalena in Xalmyrra. Horol’Khai added spells and an eleventh chapter in an Earth language for Thalena to read. Sigvariel carried the book out of Varnhallow and placed it in Skarnheim's vaults. Sigurd later remembered receiving the book and approaching Varnhallow, but the visit itself had disappeared from his memory, and he could no longer contact Horol’Khai.
An entity once tried to interfere with Varnhallow. Horol’Khai attached a spell to it before it fled. When Thalena broke the book's temporal spell, it connected her to that entity in the void.
Varnhallow and the Void
Horol’Khai met Eira, Kaelion and Jin Leiyun in Varnhallow. When they left, she stopped Eira from following Kaelion and Jin. She then pushed Eira through a different opening into Valrindor's ancient past, before Varnhallow existed.
After Varnhallow collapsed, Horol’Khai returned to Sigurd. She later joined him, Thalena, Deylin, Silas and Lunorax in the void. She powered Lunorax's repeated timerifts so the group could reach the earlier attacks on Chronasis, Kyranthos and Irrathis. Deylin and Sigurd cast the timerifts into those cities, while Horol’Khai guided the captured people into Varnhallow. Her power began to fail during the Kyranthos transfer, and she could no longer guarantee where or when everyone would arrive.
When the task was complete, Horol’Khai dissolved into nothingness while embracing Sigurd.
Relationships
- Sigurd: Her wielder, also known as Sigvariel. They embraced before she gave her remaining power to Lunorax and again as she dissolved.
- Thalena: Horol’Khai enchanted Thalena's book to reach her and followed her instructions in the void.

Horol’Khai had also sent Lunorax's first and youngest copy out of the void as a gift for Thalena. Thalena later discovered this after noticing that one of his copies was missing, and Sigurd recalled Horol’Khai's promise of a second gift after the book.
