Essence Shapers

bestiary

Overview

Essence shapers, commonly called shapers, are the essence-altered descendants of humans from the Malverand Empire. Their bodies were fused with microscopic essence cores to survive the darkness threatening Maraveth, creating ash-skinned people with cracked flesh and glowing essence veins. Those who remained after the transformation became the people of Shroudvale.

Across Valrindor, shapers are both a surviving people and a historical military threat. Their old expansion under Zharrek caused the Great Shaper War, and their later breakout devastated much of Shaoying, Linsothar, Hengvaris, Thundermarch, and the lands around Rimvold.

Physiology

Shapers have enhanced speed, strength, and essence manipulation. Mature shapers barely need food, hold large essence reserves, and can endure for ages when replenished. Their altered nature is inherited: children born to shapers have the same ash-colored skin, glowing veins, and infused bodies.

Their survival depends on essence. Shroudvale's towers and stored cores once sustained them. Depleted lands and fallen towers leave shapers dim, weakened, and eventually reduced to husks. Shaper bodies fail when they lose access to essence towers, cores, or powerful essence sources.

Society and History

The first shapers were created after Malverand's fall left Maraveth ruined and the surviving population facing the encroaching darkness. Malcairn, Zharrek, and Zal'therak developed the essence-infusion procedure. Zharrek and allied scholars later imprisoned Zal'therak and forced the transformation across Malverand's remaining people. The transformation split Malverand's remaining people: one group left Malverand, and the rest stayed and accepted the name essence shapers, a name given by the people who departed. The Order's enemies blame the Order for Malverand's fall and Maraveth's ruin. The physical transformation comes from the Shroudvale program under Zharrek.

Under Zharrek, Shroudvale grew from Malverand's ruins into a warped, essence-shaped domain. Zharrek gathered powerful shapers around a citadel, preached liberation from the walls and human nations around them, and pursued rule and conquest through shaper strength. Malcairn and Krexyn wanted shaper survival and rejected Zharrek's conquest.

Human nations eventually united against Shroudvale. Skarnheim, Thundermarch, Shaoying, Linsothar, and Hengvaris crushed the shapers in the Great Shaper War. Massive walls sealed Shroudvale away, leaving the surviving shapers isolated for centuries.

The shapers later broke out again. Their forces burned through cities and villages, attacked Raindawn and Rimvold, and drew responses from Skarnheim, Thundermarch, Blackcrag, and Garrik's Kaldaryn-led central and western Valrindor coalition. Zharrek's defeat during the Shaper Attack on Rimvold broke his push toward Skarnheim and central Valrindor. Garrik then moved against Maraveth in the Maraveth War to eliminate the remaining threat. The few remaining shapers had abandoned the city by the time Garrik's army reached Maraveth. Shapers such as Silas and Krexyn survived after the Shaper Attack on Rimvold and Maraveth War.

Abilities

Common shaper forces use destructive essence-driven magic, including fire, lightning, earth, air, shockwaves, barriers, and close-range force. Shaper battle groups are strong enough to threaten cities and require high-level mages to oppose them.

Power varies sharply by individual. Zharrek commands cosmic and divine magic, essence draining, barriers, close-combat enchantments, meteor attacks, and an asteroid-scale final strike. Silas combines shaper physiology with cosmic, temporal, veil, and void-adjacent magic. Krexyn is a surviving shaper leader.
