god

Hrzai is a divine god who meets with Ozaith, Nahm and Pyrathalor in the God Realm. She appears as a woman.

Hrzai supported Ozaith's preparations to invade Thalassai. She described Thalena and Cassian as threats to the gods and argued that powerful humans like Thalena should be eliminated. She explained Cassian's ability to kill gods as breaking the connections in their essence and warned that he could become the greater danger.

During one of Eira's visions, the gods greeted her as a new goddess. Hrzai welcomed her, offered help finding a wielder and warned her to avoid Xelthys.

Hrzai is the first divine mage and the god of Eira. She guarded Xalmyrra, lived among its people as Xelthys, and worked with Thalena to end Jorhan's cycles. She is Cassian's mother, with Orin as his father.

Appearance

Hrzai usually appears as a woman made of golden essence, with long golden hair and golden robes. As Xelthys, she often appeared as an old male mage. She can change her form and the way others perceive it.

Magic

Hrzai's divine magic heals injuries and forms protective shields. She taught Thalena divine magic and demonstrated unmaking, disconnecting the strands of essence that hold a target together. Cassian inherited this ability from her.

She learned to activate gates by secretly watching Belanor and the atraxi. She later used Cassian's essence alongside her own to open the Erenmyr gate and take him, Eira and Lythariel to Xolterra.

History

Belanor and the cycles

Hrzai once had many followers in Xalmyrra, but their belief declined and she lost most of her strength before Jorhan arrived.

When the atraxi's use of essence corrupted Xalmyrra, Hrzai argued that they should be left to die. During Jorhan's battle with Aldred, she made a pact with Belanor and directed him to help the refugees escape. She then sent him back to Aldred.

After Aldred died, she prevented Belanor from taking Aldred's Spiral shard from Jorhan. She wanted Jorhan to restore the devastated land before anyone challenged him. Once Jorhan established the cycles, she kept Belanor reporting that everything in Xalmyrra was well while she waited for a champion.

When Belanor could no longer endure his isolation, Hrzai guided him across Xalmyrra's veil, where he lost his memories. He returned to Varentis, lived as Brynor, married Mirael and had children. Hrzai later helped him recover his memories and resume his reports to Jorhan.

Thalena and Eira

Hrzai originally intended Deylin to take the Spiral shard in the Temple of no Return. Thalena told her that his daughter Eira must take it instead. Hrzai taught Thalena while Thalena prepared to defeat Jorhan and helped preserve the events Thalena remembered. She sent the original The Eleven Stories of Old to Skarnheim through Horol’Khai and delivered a note to Thalena's earlier self in Thalassai.

Hrzai and Orin had Cassian. She reluctantly agreed to Thalena's plan to send their infant son away so that Dorian and Rowenna would raise him.

Hrzai took Eira from Deylin and Ilyra to be raised in Irrathis. She infused part of herself into the infant, causing Eira to see the places Hrzai visited, and restricted her inherited magic. She had Deylin place books and artifacts for Eira to find, including the Heart of Oblivion. She instructed Deylin to carry Cassian through a cycle reset, then impersonated Eira to preserve the girl's place in the following cycle.

With Thalena's instructions, Hrzai recruited Tianlei, Zal'therak and Tal'Massar to help defeat the darkness. She asked Xoh'Tenol to choose Kaelion and helped arrange his part in destroying Jorhan's gate. She directed Brynor to destroy the Aethrendar Gate and ended their pact when his task was complete.

Hrzai concealed her alliance with Thalena from Ozaith. When the Aethrendar Gate was destroyed, she descended alongside him during the attack on Thalassai. Using the golden sword Thalena had forged, she pierced Ozaith to give Cassian a chance to unmake him.

She then released Eira's suppressed magic and ended her visions. Hrzai offered her a pact and instruction in divine magic. Eira accepted, receiving the golden tree shard.

Relationships

  • Orin: Cassian's father. Hrzai had their son with him in Valcirae and agreed to Thalena's plan for his upbringing.
  • Cassian: Her son, raised by Dorian and Rowenna. He inherited her unmaking and gate magic. Hrzai helped him defeat Ozaith and embraced him before revealing that she was his mother.
  • Eira: Her wielder. Hrzai arranged her childhood and concealed the purpose of her visions. After restoring Eira's magic, she formed a pact with her and offered to become her divine teacher.
  • Thalena: Her collaborator and pupil. Thalena supplied knowledge of the events they had to preserve, while Hrzai taught her divine magic, carried messages and helped carry out their plan against Ozaith and Jorhan.
  • Belanor: Her wielder for millennia. She relied on his reports to keep Jorhan unaware of her preparations and gave him a respite from his duties through his life as Brynor.

History

Belanor and the cycles

Sariel entrusted Hrzai with watching over Xalmyrra. She lived among its people and met Orin, whose support kept her from disappearing when she had few followers.

When the atraxi's use of essence corrupted Xalmyrra, Hrzai argued that they should be left to die. During Jorhan's battle with Aldred, she made a pact with Belanor and directed him to help the refugees escape. She then sent him back to Aldred.

Eira's god

Hrzai released Eira's suppressed magic, ended her visions and offered her a pact. Eira accepted, receiving the golden tree shard. Hrzai visited Cassian with Orin in Thalassai and embraced him.

While Eira traveled through Valrindor, Hrzai taught her healing and shielding. She also appeared in Dubravin to heal its people. Bogdan commissioned a statue of her and promised that Borovia would follow her.

Relationships

  • Orin: Her partner and Cassian's father. He sustained her when she had few followers and calms her restless thoughts.

Hrzai is the first divine mage and a god created by Arcanis. She guarded Xalmyrra, lived among its people as Xelthys, and worked with Thalena to end Jorhan's cycles. She is Cassian's mother and Eira's god, preserved in temporal stasis inside Eira's severed shard hand.

History

Creation and Xalmyrra

Arcanis created Hrzai as his first successful attempt to make a god core with divine magic. In 1388 BX, she ended a plague in Xalmyrra and taught divine magic to its people. Michael sent instructions through Sariel asking her to protect the region, a task she accepted.

Hrzai believed that the wishes of the people suffering from the plague had brought her into existence. Michael later explained her manufacture, surprising her. Sariel also entrusted her with a Malverand heart, which she kept for a future champion and eventually gave to Eira.

Belanor and the cycles

She sent the original The Eleven Stories of Old to Skarnheim through Horol’Khai and delivered a note to Thalena's earlier self in Thalassai.

Hrzai lived with Orin and gave birth to Cassian. To conceive him, she had mirrored Orin's being, believing him to be human. She reluctantly agreed to Thalena's plan to send their infant son away so that Dorian and Rowenna would raise him. Orin's support also kept her from disappearing as belief in her declined.

Hrzai took Eira from Deylin and Ilyra to be raised in Irrathis. She infused part of herself into the infant, causing Eira to see the places Hrzai visited, and restricted her inherited magic. Eira's journeys

When Horol’Khai pushed Eira through Varnhallow's boundary into the ancient past, Hrzai went with her. Without access to the God Realm, Hrzai had only a finite supply of essence. In ancient Maraveth, Eira severed her own shard hand and kept Hrzai in temporal stasis inside an experimental casing, waking her when needed. Hrzai later supplied the power for Eira to revive Belanor and Jareth after their heart transplants.

After their centuries in the past, Eira preserved Hrzai in her severed shard hand while the group waited in the Malverand vault beneath Maraveth to return to their own time.

Human form and death

Under Alistair's threats, Hrzai took human form and helped Tianlei and Xoh'Tenol do the same. Cassian severed their connections to the God Realm. When Alistair demanded proof that they were mortal, Hrzai volunteered. She maintained her choice despite Cassian and Eira's protests. Alistair killed her with a cosmic ray through her heart, and Eira's golden tree shard became a dead object.

Hadrian sent her body through the void gate. Amos kept her remains in a capsule while trying to recover her memories. Traces of essence responded when Thalena touched the capsule. Amos continues to study them.
