The Eleven Stories of Old

Overview

The Eleven Stories of Old is an ancient text artifact made of cryptic myths, prophecies, and fragmented histories.

Copies and Authors

The book circulates through variant copies. One copy is in the Imperial Institute library in Irrathis, and Jin uses it as the basis for corrected and expanded copies during his travels. He leaves or gives versions in Irrathis, Thalassai, Tequaltor, and Aurivallis, combining myths, travel records, Thalassai history, Xalmyrran material, and his own warnings. The Tequaltor copy reaches Eira and Cassian as the Wanderer's book.

A much older version is kept in the vaults beneath Rimvold in Skarnheim. Halgarr retrieves it for Jin, Eira, Kaelion, and their companions, and Jin uses aether magic to copy its glyphs and lines.

Thalena writes the original version of the book. In the cycle history, she shapes the first chapter from the Arcanis legend, searches Irrathis for The Eleven Stories of Old, and writes it herself from half-truths, myths, and hidden knowledge. She gives that original copy to Hrzai, who later gives it to Horol'Khai. Sigvariel carries the book out of Varnhallow and places it in Rimvold's vaults, where it becomes the ancient Skarnheim copy. Jin later adds his own corrections and chapters to surviving copies.

Contents

The book mixes mythic stories with historical records and future-facing warnings. Its chapters include The Eternity Spiral, Through the Storms, The Fallen Empire, The Architect, The Forgotten Order, and the difficult eleventh chapter. Across the variant copies, the tradition includes Xalmyrra, Arcanis, the War of Scars, Thalassai, Xolterra, Haverloch, Ulzathir, gods, Malverand, Jorhan-Theris, and the cycles.

Related books preserve overlapping material as independent texts. The Architect is both a Thalena title and a chapter in variant copies. The Legacy of Thalion Zenith preserves the same story as one chapter of the Eleven Stories variant tradition in a longer account.

The Eternity Spiral

The Eternity Spiral is the first chapter in the ancient Skarnheim copy of The Eleven Stories of Old. It contains a mythic war between light and darkness, fragments of the War of Scars, Kaldramir, and the Arcanis legend.

The chapter begins with Thalena's Arcanis myth. After ending the War of Scars under the name Arcanis, Thalena and Hrzai shape the eternal spiral symbol and the spiral shard into a legend that later becomes The Eternity Spiral.

Chapter Eleven

Chapter eleven is absent from the Irrathis version, reduced to fragments in some variant copies, and nearly unreadable in the older Skarnheim copy. Its language combines Xalmyrran, Valrindor language, Earth language, and unfamiliar symbols.

Horol'Khai writes a spell into chapter eleven after sensing a threat disturbing Valrindor. The spell shows that threat to anyone able to break it. The chapter names gods and Jorhan-Theris, and the spell prevents unprepared people from speaking or retaining the name Oktlix. Speaking that name freezes the surrounding space. Thalena breaks the spell and enters a voidlike encounter with the entity behind Horol'Khai's warning.

Uses and Custody

The Eleven Stories of Old carries myths, histories, and prophecies from the Arcanis legend, the War of Scars, the Xalmyrran cycles, and Varnhallow. Eira and Cassian remember reading it in the Irrathis Magic School archives. Jin corrects and copies old histories under the same title during his travels. Cassian reads the Xolterra material and concludes that Draven is the Wanderer of Xolterra. The Rimvold vault copy passed through Varnhallow and Horol'Khai's custody before it reached Skarnheim.

Thalena writes warnings, hidden names, and future events into the book's myths and copied variants.
