Character Network Timeline

Benedict Frost was the divine patriarch of Astralem and later the patriarch of Rimvold. An ice mage of the Order of Thalion Zenith, he governed Rimvold, organized its fleet, and helped Thalion fight the guardians of Malverand.

Appearance

Benedict was tall and broad shouldered, with pale blue eyes and a white beard.

Magic

Benedict traveled on platforms of ice and carried other people on them. He used ice surfaces as mirrors to observe what lay beyond his barriers, allowing him to watch a battle while shielding the people beside him. He could encase mages in ice and raise enormous ice walls.

History

Varnhallow

Benedict and his friend Wilfred supported Xarion's appointment as patriarch of Luminaris. After Wilfred's death, Benedict officiated the ceremony that gave Xarion the name Thalion Zenith. Following Eltaru's instructions, he supported Thalion and prepared the evacuation as timerifts consumed Luminaris. Benedict had been told that Thalion would free Varnhallow and that its people would follow him.

At the final tournament in Astralynne, Benedict froze Maia during the attempted attack on Eltaru. He released her before the evacuation and piloted Eltaru's flagship, with Rhyzmar helping him navigate through the collapsing temporal world.

Rimvold and the guardians

After the fleet reached Skarnheim, Thalion appointed Benedict patriarch of Rimvold. Benedict managed the city and the patriarchs while Thalion directed the war. He organized reports and maps, then burned records of their plans once the patriarchs had memorized them.

During the battle between Jeremiah and Uriandel, Benedict coordinated the Order's skyships and shielded Thalion while he prepared his lightning storm. Benedict then attacked Jeremiah alongside Ignatius, Sylvia, and Isandriel. Jeremiah broke his legs, which Isandriel healed. Benedict continued freezing the guardian to restrict his movements, but Jeremiah escaped.

At Jazarel Lake, Benedict, Sylvia, and the other ice mages held the water behind a growing barrier while Igor and the earth mages excavated the shore. Isandriel destroyed the barrier, releasing the flood toward Jazarel City. Benedict carried the group above the water on an ice platform. When Raphael froze the advancing wave, Benedict helped Ignatius and Isandriel break it apart. He then joined Sylvia and Igor against the remaining guardian forces.

Benedict returned to Rimvold and increased security after the guardians had seen the Order's fleet. At Thalion's request, he ordered the city's bells replaced with horns. He remained in Skarnheim to oversee its government when Thalion departed on his next mission.

Relationships

  • Thalion: Benedict followed Eltaru's instructions to support him and accepted responsibility for Rimvold. He organized the patriarchs and carried out Thalion's orders during the war.
  • Wilfred: His friend and fellow patriarch. They supported Xarion's succession in Luminaris, and Benedict officiated the ceremony after Wilfred died.
  • Sylvia: Benedict worked with her in the fighting at Jazarel Lake and against Jeremiah. They also took the captured Thamrielle into Rimvold's Great Hall.

Appearance

Benedict was tall and broad shouldered, with pale blue eyes and a white beard. As he aged, his beard grew longer and his hair whitened. He wore purple patriarch robes with silver and gold accents.

He used ice surfaces as mirrors to observe what lay beyond his barriers, allowing him to watch a battle while shielding the people beside him. He could encase mages in ice, raise enormous ice walls, and hold falling snow above an arena to keep it from obscuring the spectators' view.

History

Varnhallow

While serving as Astralem's patriarch, Benedict befriended Jin during Jin's stay in Varnhallow. Benedict and Jin tested the latest constructs, causing further collapses in Varnhallow that sent machines through timerifts. Benedict arranged tournament places for Jin, Eira, and Kaelion and helped them gain an audience with Eltaru.

He remained with them when Eltaru explained his identity as Michael and the origins of Malverand's gods. Michael ordered Benedict to remember what he heard and keep it secret. After reading The Legacy of Thalion Zenith, Michael charged him with concealing Malverand's history after his departure.

He also wrote a book describing Valrindor's geography and governments, revising it from the patriarchs' reports.

Helena and the abyss

Benedict helped Helena understand the Abyss. With Thalion's permission, he took her and Sylvia toward Crosford and froze Helena before discussing the spell. He used reflections of the stars to detect missing time, increasing the thickness of the ice when the abyss still interrupted them. He also provoked Helena by describing Mia's sacrifice until she began to recognize what was happening.

During their diplomatic visit to Crosford, Raphael froze and shattered Benedict and Sylvia. Helena's abyss returned them to their ship before they landed. After her warning, Benedict raised the flagship's divine shields and fired its cosmic weapons while Sylvia flew them away from Raphael's attacks. He did not remember his death, but helped Helena piece together what she remembered.

When Helena later collapsed with a dangerously high temperature, Benedict cooled her body while Thalion and Zero examined her.

Rescue and reconstruction

Benedict led patriarchs and skyships to rescue Isandriel's expedition from the tsunami in the Plains of Eternity. His ice platform carried the survivors toward a waiting skyship. He and Rhyz struck Nuvyra as she tried to stop them, and the wave overtook her. The fleet rescued allies and enemies alike and brought them to Rimvold.

Benedict offered Drashir and Vashir help rebuilding Qarezh on the condition that they kept the history secret. On Thalion's instructions, he personally oversaw the reconstruction of Jazarel. He remained in Rimvold after Thalion returned to the future and continued organizing the city.

Relationships

  • Thalion: Benedict trusted the future described in The Legacy of Thalion Zenith and followed Thalion's orders. He took care of Rimvold when Thalion traveled and continued the reconstruction after he left. When Thalion promised to have him remembered, Benedict answered that having contributed was enough.
  • Wilfred: His friend and fellow patriarch. Benedict knew that Wilfred had volunteered for his death after losing his family to a timerift. Eltaru forbade him to tell Thalion, but he eventually explained it when Thalion apologized.
  • Helena: Benedict taught her how to recognize the abyss's interruptions and helped her reconstruct the events at Crosford.
  • Sylvia: Benedict worked with her in Rimvold's government, in the war against the guardians, and in Helena's training. They continued governing Skarnheim after Thalion left.

More than twenty years after Thalion's departure, he still worked in the Great Hall. The ship survived for three millennia and was recovered by Xarion and his companions.
