Overview
Astralynne is the sprawling capital of Varnhallow and the seat of Eltaru-Ninsath's power inside the Varnhallow temporal anomaly. It houses the Grand Court, where tournaments select and elevate the divine patriarchs, and draws displaced mages into the tournament as their clearest route to Eltaru.
Outside the anomaly, Astralynne is Sigvariel's capital in Varnhallow until Uriandel's Abraxas-aligned forces devastate it.
Layout and Features
Astralynne is an enormous, ordered capital with broad roads, gridded streets, tall buildings, spacious parks, immense residential blocks, and thriving squares. It is larger than Irrathis and comparable in scale to Axanaxa.
The city is highly advanced and tightly controlled. Rail-like construct carts move through clean avenues, constructs handle mundane work such as cleaning and hauling, and orderly skyship docks at the outskirts handle heavy traffic from across Varnhallow. Its buildings use iron and gold tones, wrought iron, gilded domes, tall spires, large stained-glass windows, and structured civic design.
The Grand Court dominates a large central space near a government district enclosed by tall iron-clad walls. Eltaru's palace and government complex include grand steps, courtyards, parks, skyship docks, gilded gates, and ornate civic buildings. Eira senses strange tunnels and rooms far beneath Astralynne. Eltaru spends most of his time keeping Varnhallow intact.
Grand Court
The Grand Court is Astralynne's arena and ceremonial tournament site. Eltaru uses its tournaments to test, select, and elevate divine patriarchs. Matches use limited essence cores and forbid weapons.
During Varnhallow's final tournament, Eltaru releases the spell holding Varnhallow together from the Grand Court gathering. The release devastates the court and forces surviving patriarchs, competitors, and citizens to evacuate by skyship.
Government and Public Life
Astralynne is governed from Eltaru's palace and government complex. The divine patriarchs administer, fight, oversee tournaments, guard the city, and carry out elite assignments for the god-king. The city is heavily militarized, with purple-robed mages and patriarchs patrolling streets, guarding entrances, and preparing citizens, constructs, airships, and skyships for city defense or evacuation.
Eltaru's tournaments dominate public life. Citizens gather in vast numbers at the Grand Court, competitors fight with limited essence cores and no weapons, and dangerous magical combat is a public spectacle. Accidental deaths can draw applause.
History
Before the anomaly, Astralynne is Sigvariel's capital in Varnhallow. Uriandel's Abraxas-aligned forces devastate much of the city by 2082 AX and take northern Varnhallow. After Michael and Sigvariel leave with their strongest followers to seal Varnhallow inside the temporal anomaly, Astralem becomes the new Varnhallow capital outside the anomaly.
Within the anomaly, outsiders and stranded mages repeatedly pursue the Grand Court tournament as their strongest path to Eltaru. Eira, Kaelion, and Jin live in a lavish Astralynne estate during tournament preparation and meetings with Benedict and Michael. Displaced mages and allies, including Vianna, Zayren, Aurelia, Dorian, Rowenna, Virel, Kren, Svanhild, Maia, Ivan, Isaac, Zhang, and Lysander, converge on the city through the tournament and related plans.
During the final tournament, Eltaru uses the Grand Court gathering to release the spell holding Varnhallow together. Patriarchs, competitors, and allies fight around the attempt to kill or protect Eltaru. Maia's redirected beam tears into the stands, Vianna's reflected plasma burns through nearby streets, and the spell drains essence from cores, the world, and citizens in the stands. Surviving patriarchs, citizens, competitors, and allies escape aboard skyships as the anomaly collapses.
After the anomaly breaks, Isandriel leads the survivors to Astralem. Astralynne, Varnhallow's former capital, was recently destroyed. Rhyzmar and Thea scout the ruins; Uriandel's forces have skyships, thousands of mages, and an army preparing outside the devastated city.
