Overview

Ice magic, or frost magic, is one of the basic elemental schools alongside fire magic, water magic, earth magic, air magic, and lightning magic. Mages use it to preserve food, cool homes and cities, freeze waterways, shape terrain, and create storms, walls, barriers, and weapons.

Civic Uses

In early Maraveth, ice mages preserve food, cool homes during hot weather, freeze river sections for fishing, and shape terrain when needed. Michael freezes meat in underground food-storage chambers and serves on Maraveth's council.

Hotter regions also use ice mages for cooling. Pyrenis has volcanic terrain and stays livable through regulated air, cold water, and local ice mages. Its signature volcanic ice cream combines heat with conjured frost, making the city a profitable home for mages who know ice magic.

Combat Uses

Combat ice magic can form shields, walls, barriers, prisons, monoliths, needles, spears, swords, boats, frozen paths, hailstorms, snowstorms, and glacial terrain. Skilled users freeze water, moisture, clouds, and battlefield surfaces quickly enough to block routes and reduce visibility. Aldar can also sense another user's ice through his own magic and judge whether it is cold and stable enough to hold.

Raphael's golden ice can freeze clouds, ocean, ships, and large regions into a golden ice age. Gabriel, a god of ice, descends with extreme cold, snowstorms, monolithic ice, and freezing winds.

Users and Mixed Forms

Michael and Raphael are the two most skilled ice mages in early Maraveth. Aldar defends Xalmyrra as a level eight frost mage. Gabriel uses divine ice and later fuses his cold with Azarion's air power through the hurricane shard. Viviana is a fire-and-ice mage whose path runs through Pyrathalor, Morozkaya, the burning frost crystal, and the Glaive of Frost and Fire. Maric begins from water magic. After Renneth gives him the lava shard through their pact, Maric uses ice structures, ice needles, and mixed fire-water-ice techniques.

Ice mages often freeze water, pull moisture from the air, shape snow, and keep storage cold. Ice magic also pairs repeatedly with fire: Morozkaya combines fire and ice through its rulers and the Ember Spire, Pyrathalor is a god of fire and ice, and Vianna's frostfire power fuses the two schools in combat.
