Ulzathir is a nation in eastern Valrindor, ruled by Ozaith and his lineage. Its capital, Ishtanûr, stands near a large river that leads to the ocean. Dark stone and pale gold distinguish its cities and public buildings.
Capital and position
Ishtanûr has broad streets and tall spires, with the spiraling Council Citadel rising above the city. The citadel houses the ruling council and Ozaith’s throne. Ulzathir lies across the sea from Thalassai and is the eastern nation closest to it by boat. Much of the nation is desert; it also has temperate areas.
Aether magic is common among its mages. The nation is also named among the ancient kingdoms in the Eleven Stories of Old.

Ulzathir has long sheltered refugees from across Valrindor. Aether magic is common among its mages.
Zain’s accession
Ulzathir’s invasion of Thalassai ended in defeat. At Chronasis, Cassian destroyed Ozaith after Xelthys struck the god with her sword.
Zain returned to Ishtanûr with the surviving fleet and found Alistair Koss occupying Ozaith’s throne. He killed Koss with a cosmic beam and took control of Ulzathir. To prevent news of the god’s death from undermining his rule, Zain ordered the people to be told that Ozaith had chosen him to lead the nation.

Much of Ulzathir is occupied by the Dahruz Desert, the largest desert in Valrindor. Ulzathir also has temperate areas. Its western and southern regions are major destinations for refugees arriving through Skarnheim, Haverloch or the Navan Sea. These regions have their own local rulers and enjoy considerable independence.
Khaladun stands at the northern end of the desert. Beyond it, well maintained roads pass through plains, dense forests, villages and towns. Khaladun’s dark stone and pale gold resemble the capital’s architecture. Its wooden sandship docks, faded by the sun, contrast with polished celestial spires deeper in the city.
Government and transport
Aether magic is common in Ulzathir. Mages fly between buildings, and sandships cross the desert with air magic filling their sails and aether magic lifting their hulls. Under Ozaith, his sons and daughters governed regions and maintained peace, while the capital’s council gathered around his throne in the Council Citadel. Ozaith also appeared in cities outside the capital.
History
Ozaith’s rule
Ulzathir sheltered people fleeing the Malverand Empire. Ozaith ordered that all refugees be accepted, including those with little magical power, and that they be treated well. New arrivals were expected to contribute through work.
As the Plains of Eternity expanded eastward, they cut the land route to Myrravel and Solvarria and encroached on Ulzathir itself. Nadun, Ozaith’s wielder, led the northern campaign with the god’s approval. Ozaith could not descend within the plains, and Nadun died during the war.

Zain has begun heavily militarizing Ulzathir.

Ulzathir’s terrain also includes craggy brown rocks and palm jungles.
Brahzûn, one of Ulzathir’s largest cities, lies in the west near the Navan Sea. Its coastline has cliffs, palms and scattered rivers; fertile plains, grasslands and forests interrupt the desert. Ulzathir receives little snow even in winter. Brahzûn has dark stone domes, spires and towers with a golden tint, and its central government building echoes the capital’s spiraling citadel. A busy road connects it with Sharûmara.

Trade
Brahzûn, governed by Zhulkar, produces textiles and raises ibrashi for wool. Food imports from Haverloch are vital to Ulzathir. The conquest of Solvarria brought engineers who tested essence engines on sandships; Archibald also sent specialists to help implement a planned railway between the nations.
History
Ozaith’s rule
Ulzathir emerged as an independent nation supported by trade and diplomacy during the expansion of the ancient Malverand Empire. It became a refuge for people fleeing the empire. Ozaith ordered that all refugees be accepted, including those with little magical power, and that they be treated well. New arrivals were expected to contribute through work. Simple stone buildings stood on the outskirts as Ishtanûr expanded.
As the Plains of Eternity expanded eastward, they cut the land route to Myrravel and Solvarria and encroached on Ulzathir itself. Nadun, Ozaith’s wielder, led the northern campaign. Sharuzh plotted with King Ranan and Queen Nuvyra of Myrravel to kill him and obtain the source. Their ambush killed Nadun, and the Order subsequently exposed the traitors and avenged him.

Zain militarized Ulzathir, repaired its ships and distributed resources for his campaigns. He allied with Solvarrian separatists led by Archibald, besieged Sol, and captured Solvarria. Archibald was installed as its ruler, and Solvarrian troops joined Zain’s army.
Zain secretly accepted Khauren as his god, presenting his new power to the public as proof that Ozaith had evolved rather than died.
Ulzathir is a nation in eastern Valrindor, ruled by Emperor Anshar. Its capital, Ishtanûr, stands near a large river that leads to the ocean. Dark stone and pale gold distinguish its cities and public buildings.
Geography and settlements
Ishtanûr’s broad streets, towers accented with gold and spiraling Council Citadel dominate the capital. Forests and dunes surround the city. Its pale gold roads have been repaired after the war, and the damaged citadel is partly rebuilt and in use. Ulzathir lies across the sea from Thalassai and is the eastern nation closest to it by boat.
Much of Ulzathir is occupied by the Dahruz Desert, the largest desert in Valrindor. Ulzathir also has temperate areas. A busy road connects it with Sharûmara.
Government and society
Anshar governs from the Council Citadel with new advisors and officials. His coronation was endorsed by Ishqari and Zhulkar, and his public programme called for unity, trade and a peaceful future. Zhulkar, the governor of Brahzûn, represents Ulzathir at the Valrindor Council at Anshar’s insistence.
Under Ozaith, his sons and daughters governed the regions and maintained peace. The capital’s council assembled around Ozaith’s throne, and the god appeared elsewhere in the nation as well.
Aether magic is common. Mages fly between buildings, while aetherships use docking platforms. Ulzathir’s mages wear black robes, with deeper black indicating higher rank.
Trade and transport
Brahzûn specializes in clothing and trade. Its surrounding farms raise ibrashi for wool, and the animals also pull large carts along the roads. Wool exports continued through Zain’s takeover; after the war, Virel concluded a new export agreement with Zhulkar. Haverloch supplies rice and corn to Ulzathir.
Sandships cross the desert using air magic in their sails and aether magic to lift their hulls. Zain’s conquest of Solvarria brought engineers and trials of essence engines on sandships, along with plans for a railway between the nations. The Valrindor Council’s broader rail project also includes a proposed link between Ulzathir and Thalassai beneath the ocean.

Sharuzh plotted with King Ranan and Queen Nuvyra of Myrravel to kill him and obtain the source. Their ambush killed Nadun, and the Order subsequently exposed the traitors and avenged him.
The original Ozaith left Ulzathir with Thalion. The god who subsequently ruled Ulzathir and attacked Thalassai was a reborn Ozaith, distinct from the original.

Ulzathir’s invasion of Thalassai ended in defeat. At Chronasis, Cassian destroyed Ozaith after Xelthys struck the god with her sword.

Zain secretly accepted Khauren as his god, presenting his new power to the public as proof that Ozaith had evolved rather than died.
Conquest and rebuilding
Thalassai and Haverloch attacked Ishtanûr to end Zain’s rule. During the battle, Zayren created a singularity near the defenders; its release devastated the capital’s eastern outskirts. Zain fled west, where Alistair—under the identity of Aldar—crippled his body. Khauren seized that body, and Cassian destroyed the god and the possessed body.
Anshar initially remained in the capital as its temporary ruler, then was crowned emperor. Ishtanûr began rebuilding, and Solvarria’s own government was restored. At Anshar’s coronation, Cassian, Virel and Simon joined him in a public gesture of cooperation.
Thalena’s account
In Thalena’s Shores of Eternity, Ishqari’s crystal exploded while Ishtanûr was recovering from the war. Much of the desert collapsed, and the lake feeding the capital’s river was displaced. The resulting flood submerged Ishtanûr.
