Khauren

Divine Pacts and False Ozaith

Khauren is a god from the Malverand era, the former god of Eremion, and the hidden deity behind Zain's public "new Ozaith" claim in Ulzathir. He speaks through fiery pact marks in his wielders' palms, first as the flame sigil carried by Eremion and later as Zain's flame shard. Through those pacts he urges both men toward imperial rule, gathers strength through mortal belief and essence, and seeks a way to leave the God Realm.

Zain uses Khauren's pact to preserve Ulzathir's faith in divine continuity after Ozaith's death, while Khauren uses that same belief to increase his own power.

Flame Shard

Khauren's pact leaves a flame sigil, flaming shard, or fiery shard in the wielder's palm. Eremion carries the earlier mark, and Zain later carries the flame shard while presenting Khauren's power as Ozaith's return or evolution.

Personality and Goals

Khauren is ambitious, patient, secretive, and persuasive. He nurtures Eremion's belief that he should rule Malverand, introduces him to a void being interested in origin magic, and uses Barachiel's fall to seek a way out of his pact with Eremion. Eremion's refusal to release the pact leaves Khauren trapped with him even when that bond blocks Eremion from taking a spiral shard.

With Zain, Khauren is more open about the transaction: Zain needs power and legitimacy, while Khauren needs a powerful wielder, followers, and enough essence to reach his full potential. Khauren wants freedom from the God Realm and from dependence on an unwilling pact-bound wielder. He intends to possess Zain, sustained by Ulzathir's followers and belief, while origin magic breaks the God Realm as a refuge for rival gods.

Abilities

Khauren channels power through divine pacts that mark his wielders' palms. He communicates through his wielder's mark, advises his wielder, investigates the God Realm, senses divine threats, casts alongside Zain, and draws on belief and essence from followers. Zain's public displays in Ulzathir strengthen the flame shard, and Ulzathir's belief supplies the essence Khauren needs outside the God Realm.

His pact gives Zain access to destructive fire magic. When Zain is brought to the edge of death at Rimvold, Khauren takes control, uses Zain's aether magic to keep the body alive, and leaves him casting red-line, black-line, and spatial attacks. Khauren knows origin magic and uses it to destabilize the God Realm, creating conditions that can strand or destroy rival gods while giving him a path to possess Zain.

Khauren can run low on essence, hides his location from rival gods, and admits that changes in the God Realm exceed his understanding. Khauren is far stronger than Nahm, and vulnerable allies should flee if Khauren appears.

History

Khauren is bound to Eremion before the Vireen expedition. He encourages Eremion's resentment of Barachiel's guardian order, urges him toward imperial rule, and brings him into contact with Oktlix, the void being Khauren later uses against Barachiel and draws into his origin-magic plans.

During the Aethrendar Gate attack, Khauren uses Oktlix against Barachiel in the gate passage. Khauren's attack at the Aethrendar Gate removes Barachiel from Valrindor, splits the spiral shard into two claimable pieces, and gives Eremion a reason to break his pact with Khauren so he can claim the shards. Eremion keeps the pact even when it prevents him from wielding a spiral shard, leaving Khauren bound to him.

As Malverand collapses, Khauren remains Eremion's divine companion while Eremion opposes Isandriel, Raphael, and rival guardians during the Fall of Malverand. He discusses origin-magic disturbances with Eremion, warns him about threats, and remains bound to Eremion as the guardian creates second-generation shard wielders such as Azarion, Koriel, and Rhaeniel.

After Eremion returns in Blackcrag, Khauren retains more memory than Eremion. He hides in the God Realm as a distant new god, investigates surviving deities, and advises Eremion while the guardian rebuilds power. When Thalena defeats Eremion and leaves him weakened, Khauren kills him with red origin-like lines that destroy Eremion's body and leave only his Malverand heart.

After Eremion's fall, Khauren answers Zain's reach toward the God Realm and forms a new pact with him in Ulzathir. Zain hides Khauren's name and gives Ulzathir a false divine-continuity story: the pact is Ozaith's return or evolution. Raphael knows Khauren through the shard, accepts him as an old ally, and uses the bond to bring Gabriel's faction into alliance with Zain.

Khauren grows stronger through Zain's rule and Ulzathir's belief. At Rimvold, Zain is nearly killed by Zayren, Lythariel, and Remus before Khauren takes control, keeps Zain alive through his aether magic, and leaves him with origin-like attacks and little memory of the survival. After the Pyrenis attack, Cassian and Tianlei prepare to strike Zain before Khauren can deepen the damage to the God Realm, lock out rival gods, and possess Zain permanently in the mortal realm.

Relationships

  • Eremion: Khauren is Eremion's god, adviser, and closest divine companion, but he also works to escape their pact. Eremion trusts him deeply and refuses to release the bond, and Khauren ultimately kills him after Thalena leaves Eremion weakened.
  • Zain: Zain becomes Khauren's later wielder, political cover, and intended permanent host. Their pact gives Zain fire magic, but Khauren can take control when Zain runs low enough on essence.
  • Raphael and Gabriel: Raphael knows Khauren from the Malverand era and draws him into the alliance around Ulzathir, Rimvold, and Malverand technology. Gabriel belongs to Khauren's ancient god generation and aligns with him through Raphael's faction.
  • Oktlix: Oktlix is the void being Khauren uses to attack Barachiel during the Aethrendar Gate attack.
  • Opponents: Ozaith, Nahm, Tianlei, Cassian, Virel, Eira, Thalena, and their allies work to expose or stop Khauren's use of Zain and the new Ozaith claim.
