Mike is a medic and researcher in the Malverand Intergalactic Empire, known as Medic Mike of Maraveth. He helped Isandro and Helena Hyperion develop the early Maraveth core and specializes in medical nanomachines and reflective nanite technology.
Appearance
Mike is tall, with blue eyes, long white hair tied in a ponytail and a long white beard. He usually wears a green coat and glasses.
Personality
Mike welcomes unfamiliar mages and takes an interest in their bodies and abilities. He is less cautious about working with them than Rafe and Eamon. He enjoys games and drinks, and urges Isandro to spend more time enjoying life rather than working for the empire.
Abilities
Mike began as a gifted divine mage. His medical technology uses nanomachines to repair cells through methods based on divine healing. He has developed numerous treatments and uses scanners to study unusual bodies, essence and nanites. He also works with essence containment and the power systems that open gates.
Mike programs black box constructs for defense and research, setting their instructions and safeguards before deploying them.
History
Early research
Isandro recruited Mike to the research team he formed with Helena beneath Maraveth. They sought to build a system that could manage the empire and improve itself. Mike studied nanotechnology while the team developed the first core. He wanted to reproduce magic through technology and surpass its capabilities.
As Mike, Rafe and Eamon weakened with age, Helena and Isandro preserved them for the future. Mike was later remade with a new body, retaining his original brain.
Work with the other Valrindor
When Thalena's essence copy disintegrated in Maraveth, Mike and Rafe captured her particles in a capsule. Mike worked to preserve her brain and memories. During the core containment emergency, Mike led the work to power the gate beneath the city, with Amos assisting. Amos later used it to search the void for Thalena and her companions.
Mike and Rafe also sent a black box through the enlarged breach beneath Zarephon. Mike gave it instructions to protect the breach and repel essence, with a safeguard that would make it collapse if essence contaminated it. The construct could reassemble beyond the breach and imitate a creature it encountered.
When Eira, Kaelion and Xarion crossed into the empire, Mike welcomed them and studied their abilities. He accompanied Eira and Kaelion to the Hyperion system and fired three black boxes toward Vespera, with their instructions set for defense and research. On Meridian, he guided them to the Obelisks beneath Novaris. His recording of Kaelion touching an obelisk later allowed Thalena to identify a displacement that the observers had mistaken for Kaelion's own blink.
Mike tested Kaelion's resistance to solar radiation and suggested that he could replenish essence from a sun. He supplied the breathing apparatus Kaelion used during his attack on the Spiral Mandate in the Proxion system.
He later helped Emilia send Eliona and Azarion to Vespera to study its life and locate his black boxes. After returning to Maraveth, he studied Abraxas's damaged nanites and discussed using the quasicrystals in Thalena's star shard to combine essence and technology.
Thalena's account
In Thalena's Shores of Eternity, Mike examined Xoh’Tenol and a solar core before the Spiral Mandate attacked Valrindor. During the destruction of Maraveth, he issued evacuation orders and escaped through the gate. He and Eamon continued their research in Chronasis and repaired equipment in the ruined Maraveth. They remained behind after other survivors departed for Meridian, searching for the solar cores. They eventually located Xoh’Tenol in space, and Mike piloted the ship Thalena used to recover Xoh’Tenol's body, Kaelion's heart and the cores.
Relationships
- Isandro and Helena Hyperion: They recruited Mike to their early research and preserved him as he aged. He continues working for Isandro and encourages him to enjoy the life their work has made possible.
- Rafe and Eamon: His research colleagues since the early core project. They work together on nanite technology, essence containment and the problems connecting the two Valrindors.
- Eira and Kaelion: Mike befriended them during their travels in the empire. He acted as their guide, explained its technology and played games with Kaelion.
