Varnhallow temporal anomaly

magictemporal

The Varnhallow temporal anomaly was a vast barrier that enclosed Varnhallow outside the ordinary passage of time. Life continued within it, but crossing its boundary could separate travelers and carry them into different eras. Michael, known within Varnhallow as Eltaru-Ninsath, ruled the country inside.

Barrier

Ordinary attempts to enter the temporal wall returned travelers to their starting point. Deylin saw it as a blue wall stretching across the horizon and into the sky. He opened a passage by matching its temporal rhythm while Anshar and Vianna destabilized it with intense heat. His companions were separated during the crossing.

Origins

During the collapse of the Malverand Empire, Michael and Sigvariel gathered their strongest followers to build an army for Isandriel. They intended this force to help him end the rule of the remaining guardians. Their preparations used temporal mages' years and the power of Horol’Khai. The anomaly gave their followers time to develop an advanced fleet, while Isandriel waited in Astralem.

Collapse

Eltaru broke the spell by drawing Essence from cores, the surrounding world, his necklace and nearby mages. The drain spread to weaker citizens, aging and killing them, while his own body cracked under the strain. Thalion led a fleet of survivors out of Varnhallow to meet Isandriel in the past.

Deylin's group escaped separately near Arcanis Village. Their crossing had taken them three years beyond their departure. The barrier was gone, leaving Varnhallow's forests, hills and plains open to ordinary travel.

The spell needed continual maintenance from Michael, Sigvariel and Horol'Khai. Even with their work, it grew unstable: rifts opened and pieces of buildings disappeared. Gods within the anomaly could not reach the world outside it. Horol'Khai was an exception until she weakened.

Eira could open a narrow passage without creating an entire temporal bubble. This drained her Essence and required concentration to keep her companions together. She could aim for a particular time, but could still miss by a few years; other travelers risked emerging centuries or millennia from their intended time. Michael gave the anomaly's creation as its earliest exit, but Horol'Khai later forced Eira through a crossing that carried her much further into the past.

Michael and Sigvariel intended to seal themselves and their followers inside the anomaly and rebuild their strength. Outsiders' arrival was an unforeseen complication. Michael had not planned for Thalion to lead the army or for travelers to alter history through other exits.

Eliona worked to break the barrier from outside as part of Raphael's plans. Sigvariel emerged in another era as Sigurd, initially unable to remember his past. Horol'Khai returned to him after the spell ended.

Outside the anomaly, Eliona and Azarion worked to break the barrier for Raphael. Its collapse opened the way for Zain's forces to attack Rimvold under an arrangement with Raphael.
