Vireen

Overview

Vireen is a habitable planet near Valrindor in the same solar system. Arcanis names it during ancient Malverand studies of Valrindor's solar system and chooses it as the target of Malverand's first interplanetary colony project.

The Vireen expedition fails for Malverand: the project connects the Aethrendar Gate to Vireen, strands Barachiel and Arcanis on the planet, and forces Aruviel into the choices that lead to the later origins of Belanor and Jareth.

Geography

Vireen follows an outer solar orbit in Valrindor's system. Its path stays close enough for Arcanis to plan a direct skyship voyage. From space, it is an indigo-blue world with a luminous atmospheric halo, dark almost black seas, red landmasses, green regions, deserts, storm belts, and snowy mountain peaks.

The Malverand expedition lands near a river delta close to an ocean, with mountains inland and strange vegetation across the red earth. The planet has breathable dense air, elevated gravity, and reddish-brown essence that requires spell adjustments. The colony region has salt-rich soil, denser water, orange angular forests, reflective green grass, bugs, birds, predators, edible fish and crabs, and imported livestock that begin mutating after arrival.

Ancient Colony

The first expedition leaves Valrindor in 1021 BX aboard a colossal essence-powered skyship piloted by Eira under the name Aruviel. The crew includes skilled mages, researchers, builders, healers, engineers, supplies, seeds, livestock, god cores, Malverand hearts, and a massive gate meant to connect back to Valrindor.

The settlers build a town from Vireen's red earth, using fire magic to harden the soil into a dense metallic material. They also develop smaller local ships, adapt their food supply, scout the planet, and prepare the Vireen-side gate. By 1011 BX, the colony is stable enough for the gate test.

Aethrendar Gate Disaster

Michael crosses from the Aethrendar Gate to Vireen and returns safely. Eremion follows, reunites with Aruviel, and also returns. When Barachiel enters after them, the passage collapses into a black void, the spiral shard splits on Valrindor's side, and Barachiel reaches Vireen with fatal damage from the passage.

Barachiel spends his final hours on Vireen with Eira before dissolving into white particles and leaving his Malverand heart behind. Arcanis later reaches Vireen through the half-functional Vireen-side gate after navigating the void with air magic and a sight enhancer. He arrives already dying after using Eira's future magic to create the gate schematics, tells her to keep his Malverand heart, gives her that heart and a geometric core, and dissolves there as well.

After the damaged gate remains active, two atraxi bodies emerge and are killed by a cosmic beam. Eira revives them with Malverand hearts, sends the future Belanor and Jareth onward through the void, removes the Vireen-side gate, and takes the colossal expedition skyship back toward Valrindor. The original settlers remain stranded on Vireen; Eira has removed the gate and taken the ship that carried them there.

Malverand Intergalactic Empire

In the Malverand Intergalactic Empire, Vireen is a developed world in the Valrindor system, colonized early by the empire. Imperial starcharts show it beside Corthis and Valrindor, and large ships can reach it from Valrindor in a few hours.

Eira later visits this Vireen with Isandro, Mike, and Kaelion. The planet retains red soil, black seas, orange forests, and salt-tinged air from the ancient expedition. The world has also grown into cities, starports, farms, shield towers, and storm defenses. Imperial records preserve ruins and texts from an older settlement, including Aruviel's message that Barachiel and Arcanis died on Vireen.

Secrets and Mysteries

Vireen is where Barachiel and Arcanis truly die after the Aethrendar Gate collapse. Eira's actions there also preserve the chain that leads to Belanor and Jareth: she revives two atraxi bodies with Malverand hearts, sends them through the void, removes the Vireen gate, and leaves the remaining colonists stranded because the colony has become dangerous.
