The Burning Frost Crystal is a first generation god core from Malverand that gave rise to Pyrathalor, the god of fire and ice. Isandriel took it from the vault beneath Maraveth and carried it while seeking someone capable of wielding its power.
Appearance and Properties
The crystal is small enough to carry in a robe or pocket. Its surface shifts between frost and flame, and it burned and froze in Isandriel's hand. It can respond to Essence channeled into it, but a mage's ability to supply power does not ensure that they can wield it.

Isandriel's Experiments
Isandriel took the dormant crystal with Michael and Raphael's permission, hoping to find a protector. He considered Aldred as a possible wielder, but Aldred had already acquired a spiral shard when Isandriel next met him.
In Radiance Prime, he tested the crystal with Dalren, who channeled fire magic and power from an Essence core into it. The crystal shivered briefly, then became inert. Isandriel took it back.
Isandriel and Thamrielle then forced it awake on a volcanic glacier in Morozkaya. They channeled their power through it without absorbing it, using Essence cores and drawing Essence from the surrounding land. Ice melted and the volcano erupted. An obsidian being emerged and named himself Thalor. The crystal remained with Isandriel, its colors dimmed to pale streaks of Essence. Thalor later worked at the forges in Radiance Prime.
Pyrathalor's Awakening
Viviana, who had already known and wielded Pyrathalor's power as Vianna before traveling into the past, encountered Thalor in the construct workshops. Isandriel gave her the crystal to test. After giving Thalor her glaive, she had him channel Essence into the crystal with her.
The activation released an eruption of fire and frost that devastated Radiance Prime and collapsed the Spire of Triumvirate. Thalor took on a form of fire and ice and named himself Pyrathalor. Viviana and Isandriel took him to Morozkaya, where she left him to help its people.
Before traveling into the past, Vianna's pact with Pyrathalor had placed a crystal of fire and frost in her palm and granted her his power.
Capture and Loss of Power
Thalena captured Pyrathalor with a black hole near Chronasis, leaving Vianna's shard muted. Cyrena and Deylin made an Essence core from his captured power. Aelius carried this stored power into the invasion of Thalassai, then passed it to Cassian, who used it against Ozaith. Thalena finally drew out the remaining Essence to destroy Ozaith's asteroid. That later Essence core shattered, and Pyrathalor's remaining Essence was destroyed.
