Thalassai Legions

The Thalassai Legions are the military forces of Thalassai. Their mages defend cities and coasts, train soldiers and carry out military operations under the imperators. The navy supports coastal defense, exploration and civilian evacuation.

Command and ranks

Aelius, Hadrian and Marcellus lead the legions as imperators. Aelius is responsible for military order in Chronasis, while Hadrian commands in Pyrenis. Legati serve beneath the imperators.

The military also deals with rogue mages and criminals. Under Thalena, offenders of high magical level were usually executed because of the danger they presented.

Navy

Admiral Pontarius commands Thalassai's navy. Its ships explore the seas around Xolterra, defend threatened coasts and rescue island populations. Pontarius presents maps and reports on the southern darkness and eastern storms to the archons alongside Naryon.

Defense against the darkness

When the southern darkness advanced, Thalena ordered the legions to prepare using ancient creature records updated by Jin. Deylin trained soldiers and helped improve weapon designs. Pontarius evacuated most of the threatened island villages, while Ignaros assembled forces in Pyrenis. Thalena instructed Aelius to keep Hadrian and Marcellus informed of the threat.

Imperators hold the highest military rank. Legati rank below them and above centurions, and are generally mages of level seven or higher.

Recruitment and training

The legions recruit strong mages. Hadrian can recommend recruits to the military academy in Pyrenis, giving them an insignia bearing his magic as proof. Training combines sparring with enchanted and mundane weapons, tactical drills and refinement of magical techniques.

Qualified centurions take practical, strategic and theoretical tests for promotion to legatus. Hadrian tests their individual defense against his attacks and their ability to command formations. Successful legati can request a posting in another city.

Legati train in the colosseums of Pyrenis and Chronasis. They also guard city perimeters, help reinforce barriers and fight as elite forces.

Virel used the recruitment system to infiltrate the legions, concealing his true abilities. With Hadrian's recommendation, he rose to centurion, passed the legatus tests and transferred to Chronasis. He later used his military knowledge to plan the attacks on Pyrenis and Terranova while avoiding the imperators.

When the southern darkness advanced, Thalena ordered the legions to prepare using ancient creature records updated by Jin. Deylin trained soldiers and helped improve weapon designs. Pontarius evacuated most of the threatened island villages, while Ignaros assembled forces in Pyrenis.

During the Alliance against Thalassai's attack, Thalena sent the main legions to Pyrenis and Terranova, keeping an elite force of mostly legati in Chronasis. Hadrian defended Pyrenis; Pontarius and Marcellus supported Terranova alongside Thalcoris's army. Pyrenis suffered heavy losses from offshore construct weapons, while Terranova largely held. The attackers withdrew during the catastrophe at Chronasis.

Political authority and reconstruction

After Thalena's disappearance, Ignaros proposed allowing imperators and legati to vote in the selection of the new archon of Chronasis. The assembly accepted the change, and the imperators supported Cassian's appointment.

Cassian ordered spare legions and mages of level seven or below to help rebuild Pyrenis and other damaged regions. He assigned Marcellus to reconstruction in Terranova and ocean patrols using windweavers. Aelius selected promising fighters of level eight or higher for further training in Chronasis. After the eastern storms disappeared, Pontarius carried a delegation to Teryndal to establish contact with Xalmyrra.

Eastern expeditions

With Pontarius's fleet near Terranova, Cassian asked him to assess a route around the Plains of Eternity. Hadrian warned that the surrounding seas and inland areas held dangerous creatures and that any expedition would need exceptional mages.

Aelius's departure

A timerift took Aelius and his companions from Stella Aeterna in Chronasis to Varnhallow in the distant past. Aelius served Thalion's Order there under the name Ignatius. Hadrian and Marcellus continued leading Thalassai's forces during his absence.

History

Foundation

Helena created the army after instigating the Internal Thalassai War. She recruited promising survivors, including young people orphaned by the fighting, into a settlement north of Chronasis. Concealing her identity with black hair, she trained them for decades; her students began teaching other recruits as the force expanded.

She appointed the strongest mages as imperators, with legati and centurions below them, while retaining the older civil title of archon. Her army conquered the warring regions and ended the conflict. Helena entrusted Thalassai to the imperators and commanders, then withdrew while the country rebuilt. She later entered civil government under the name Thalena.

Attacking sea and flying creatures forced the fleet to expend its defensive essence cores, while the overflowing essence near the plains weakened their magic and made draining difficult. The expedition mapped haze reaching closer to Thalassai's western seas than expected.

War with Ulzathir

After Zain conquered Solvarria, Cassian ordered the army to prepare for war, and Hadrian checked Marcellus's readiness in Pyrenis. Hadrian and Anshar subsequently led the conquest of Solvarria, with Marcellus and mages of high level helping hold the territory.

After an essence bomb caused a tsunami and earthquakes around Pyrenis, the army returned from Solvarria to assist. Marcellus and Ignaros led rescue efforts. With Raphael dead, Cassian expected less support for Zain and decided to attack Ishtanûr to prevent another such blast, coordinating with Haverloch. Hadrian and Jin selected elite legati from Chronasis for the campaign.

Thalassai's army withdrew from the battlefield after the black hole's detonation, while Cassian and his strongest allies pursued Zain. Marcellus transported Cassian into the battle to defeat Khauren, who had taken Zain's body. Solvarria's former government was reinstated, and Anshar became emperor of Ulzathir.

Thalena's account

In Thalena's Shores of Eternity, Aelius joined the Valrindor Council's mission to Ithyreon and died when darkness creatures caught the group by surprise and defeated them with superior skill. Later, Hadrian and Marcellus helped evacuate people from the Malverand Intergalactic Empire through its gate as the empire's Valrindor collapsed. Both were among the people Thalena lost in the years that followed.
