Archon is the title of a regional ruler in Thalassai. Its five regions are led by five archons: Thalena, Naryon, Ignaros, Calythos and Zephyra. Thalena governs Chronasis as archon of Space and Time. Zephyra is archon of Air and governs Aetherion.
The title predates these rulers. Historical records name Orin Avenhart as archon of Time and Khoradyn Kaldaryn as archon of Earth.
Archon is the title of a regional ruler in Thalassai. Five archons govern its regions and meet at the Celestial Nexus to discuss trade, agriculture, diplomacy and security.
Authority and duties
The archons hold equal authority in the formal structure, though in practice the others follow Thalena. Each governs a separate region. In Chronasis, Thalena works with chronarcs and other officials. Military command rests with the imperators, who lead the Thalassai Legions.
Regional offices
- Space and Time: Thalena governs Chronasis.
- Earth: Calythos governs Terranova.
- Fire: Ignaros governs Pyrenis.
- Water: Naryon governs Thalmyris.
- Air: Zephyra governs Aetherion.
Naryon was newly elected when Jin Leiyun visited Thalmyris. Pontarius, the admiral of Thalassai, previously held the Water office. The title itself is much older: historical records name Orin Avenhart as archon of Time and Khoradyn Kaldaryn as archon of Earth.

Archons are elected. Traditionally, the other archons and regional leaders cast the votes. At Cassian's election, the assembly extended voting rights to imperators and legati.

History
Earlier rule and Thalena's reforms
The title predates Thalena's rule. Orin Avenhart held the title of archon of Time, while Khoradyn Kaldaryn was archon of Earth.
Thalena, then living as Helena, killed Kairessa, the archon of Time, and the officials who had uncovered Thalena's destruction of historical records. She spread false accusations that other regions had attacked Chronasis, provoking the Internal Thalassai War. She later raised an army under a concealed identity and ended the war. While creating the military ranks of imperator, legatus and centurion, she preserved the older title of archon.
With archons and local leaders chosen by vote, she became a governor in Terranova. She later advised an aging archon of Time, who recommended her as his successor. The archon assembly unanimously elected her, and she styled herself archon of Space and Time. Her appointment of chronarcs to help govern Chronasis inspired other archons to establish their own titled officials.
After the archons of Air and Water retired, Lunorax and Pontarius took their offices with Thalena's support. Lunorax later resigned to remain Thalena's chronarc, and Zephyra succeeded him. Naryon succeeded Pontarius, who preferred his duties as admiral.
