The river can be reached from the large lake connected to Myriandel. Its route to the source made it a military objective: forces from Myrravel and Rahmavir planned to converge there to attack the Oracles' capital.

Course and headwaters
The river can be reached from the large lake connected to Myriandel. Before Zarephon's destruction, its headwaters lay in a deep lake within a mountain cavern behind the city. The river ran beside the passage into the cavern, whose walls were covered with murals and glowing essence veins. A rift at the bottom of the lake released water and essence into the plains.
Destruction of Zarephon
Alistair planted devices in the source cave and triggered them with a cosmic beam while Eira, Kaelion and Xarion descended toward the rift. The explosion destroyed Zarephon and tore apart the surrounding earth, momentarily severing the river's flow and leaving its bed empty.
Eira and her companions escaped through the source rift as the cavern collapsed. Ozaith reduced the opening after they crossed into the other Valrindor; Eira left it open.
