Overview

The Maraveth Core is the massive red central machine housed in the Maraveth Core Chamber beneath or deep within Isandro's Palace in Maraveth (Intergalactic Empire). It is the central control system for the Malverand Intergalactic Empire, with cables radiating from it toward cities and autonomous systems.

Imperial personnel usually call the machine the core or main core. Its massive red sphere distinguishes it from the surrounding machinery.

The core handles communications, artificial systems, defense systems, official ship tracking and steering, navigation calculations, weapon production, and research processing. During the Proxion system evacuation, much of its processing power is committed to Proxion communications, organization, and ship coordination, with additional processing allocated to places such as Zeydrith and Chronasis.

Design

The core is a large, undulating red sphere encased in layered glass-like protection. Its chamber contains large cylinders, power generators, warp engines, consoles, protected cables, hanging bridges, white-jacketed workers, and a dormant half-circle gate wired to the chamber's power source.

The machinery around the sphere is built to keep essence out. Thick protected cables, essence repellers, layered shielding, and the absence of wireless transmission near sensitive systems are part of a design meant to prevent essence from entering the machine or spreading through imperial infrastructure.

Essence Risk

The core contains or can access the empire's copied spell technology. Essence contamination can push it toward sentience. An earlier essence exposure created a sentient version of the core's systems: it overrode its guardrails, nearly destroyed the core, caused widespread chaos, and had to be shut down and forced through the chamber gate into the void. Rafe and Isandro's teams are trying to prevent a repeat. If containment fails, the nearby gate can be used as an emergency void route, matching the empire's earlier response.

An essence-infused version of the current core could destroy the Spiral Mandate and endanger the empire. If the core gained sentience, it could divert its own power and escape imperial control.

5369 AX Core Instability

The core reacts violently after Thalena / Helena Hyperion dies as an essence-made body in Isandro's palace and her essence is pulled toward Zarephon. Sparks flare from the red sphere, cracks form in its protective layers, and Rafe's teams stabilize it by disconnecting and reconnecting cables. Eamon works from Zarephon to control the breach.

Shutting the core down is rejected because Proxion's evacuation and navigation systems would collapse. A shutdown would leave Proxion's people to die and give enemies outside Proxion an opening.

By the time Eira, Kaelion, and Xarion arrive from the Zarephon breach, the empire has to keep the core running and shielded from essence. Isandro's people are trying to build or sustain another core. They need extreme sources such as stellar energy to supply the necessary power. Kytherite from Meridian and the richer deposits on Draxil are being funneled into the replacement-core work. The Proxion evacuation and Spiral Mandate threat continue.
