Terranova

Overview

Terranova is the earth-aligned land and city-region of Thalassai, ruled by Calythos, the archon of earth. Chronasis, Pyrenis, Aetherion, Thalmyris, and Terranova make up the core Thalassai regions, and Terranova has fertile land, agriculture, food exports, textiles, and the Palace of Earth.

Terranova's fields feed Thalassai, its weavers produce high-quality and essence-rich clothing, and Ozaith's army lays siege to its territory during the later Thalassai invasion.

Geography and City

Terranova is a green region of plains, rolling hills, farmland, and rich soil. Its fields grow cotton, wheat, corn, barley, fruits, and other crops, and its farmlands also produce prized textile materials.

The city has cobbled streets, homes near the outskirts, libraries, baths, a local colosseum, and the Palace of Earth. Later roads connect Terranova with Aetherion, Chronasis, and Tequaltor.

Palace of Earth

The Palace of Earth is Calythos's palace and the seat of Terranova's archon of earth. It is carved directly into the cliffside above the city and built from the surrounding hills, with dark stone visible from Terranova's streets and steps where Calythos receives visitors.

Agricultural advisors such as Aevandros serve Calythos at the palace. Helena passes the palace with Aevandros during her early Terranova years, after searching local records in the city. Jin reaches the palace after leaving Pyrenis, and Calythos receives him there for Terranova's earth-magic training.

Government and Society

Calythos rules Terranova as archon of earth. His administration includes agricultural advisors such as Aevandros, and his rule emphasizes farming, irrigation, cultivation, earth magic, and useful craft. Terranova sends administrators to archon meetings, moves trade goods through national routes, and provides healers, supplies, food production, scouts, and soldiers when the archons mobilize.

Marcellus holds imperator-level military responsibility for Terranova and Aetherion. He scouts from Terranova and later takes temporary responsibility for Terranova's recovery and patrols. During that period, Calythos stays in Chronasis and remains Terranova's archon.

History

Helena studies Terranova after leaving Pyrenis during her long campaign to erase Malverand records. She flies over its fertile fields, settles near the city's outskirts, grows fruit, practices weaving, and searches the local libraries. During this period she meets Aevandros, an agricultural advisor to the archon, who shows her the baths, colosseum, and Palace of Earth before she accidentally kills him.

Terranova and Pyrenis fight after Ozaith's followers remain active in Thalassai. Aetherion intervenes to enforce peace. Chronasis stays focused on its own politics.

When Helena returns to Chronasis in 4332 AX, she falsely blames Terranova for the attack on Chronasis and ignites the Internal Thalassai War. The Internal Thalassai War devastates Terranova's farmlands and spreads damage across Thalassai. After the Internal Thalassai War ends and common talk of the black-haired commander fades, Helena reenters politics through Terranova, wins a local leadership position, and then rises toward the Chronasis archon seat as Thalena Xenith.

During Calythos's rule, Jin Leiyun trains in Terranova; Calythos teaches him earth magic through farming, irrigation, plant cultivation, and dueling. In the later Thalassai invasion, unidentified ships and hostile forces threaten Terranova, and Ozaith's army lays siege to it. Tazarin's army, Pontarius's navy, Marcellus, Hadrian, Calythos, and the legions fight in its defense. After the siege of Terranova, Terranova remains mostly intact and keeps food production at full capacity; Cassian orders increased food production so the region can shelter people displaced by Ozaith's invasion.
