Arcanis was a researcher and inventor of the Malverand Empire, known as the god forger. His artifacts gave the empire's guardians their power, and many of his creations were stored in the Malverand vault. He had apprentices who also made artifacts. Thalena also used the name Arcanis in Xalmyrra.
History
Arcanis developed Malverine to encompass a wide range of words, expressions and descriptions, with contributions from Eremion and his wife. Barachiel then banned other forms of communication and enforced the language throughout the empire.
Arcanis disappeared after Barachiel traveled through the Aethrendar Gate. Isandriel believed he had followed the emperor and suspected that both might have returned to Valrindor. They were left without anyone able to replace the god forger.
Arcanis had forbidden the forced activation of god cores without wielders because their behavior could be dangerous and unpredictable.
Arcanis was a researcher and inventor of the Malverand Empire, known as the god forger. He developed god cores, Malverand hearts, essence cores and gates, and directed the expedition to Vireen, where he died. Thalena also used the name Arcanis in Xalmyrra.
Appearance
Arcanis had wavy dark blond hair and blue eyes. He was slightly taller than Eira and often hunched over his work.
Personality
Arcanis devoted himself to research, frequently missing council meetings and working through the night. He wanted enough time to understand and build everything he could, and continued creating new devices after gaining centuries of life. He accepted dangerous experiments as necessary steps toward further discoveries.
Magic
Arcanis could see the instructions and connections within matter, essence and living bodies. He used that understanding to strengthen materials, contain spells and design new artifacts. He also used air magic for flight and precise cutting. His unusual perception was a form of origin magic.
History
Lumeria and Maraveth
Arcanis grew up in Lumeria. He acquired his unusual magic there as a child.
Barachiel later found him in a village in Haverloch. Arcanis joined him to escape a life he found boring, and Raphael brought them to Maraveth.
Malverand technology
Arcanis first learned to capture spells in objects, producing essence lights and devices for preserving food. He gathered mages and engineers around him and taught them his construction methods. His early essence storage devices held power supplied by mages; later, he developed machines that gathered it from the surrounding world into mined crystals. These became the basis of essence towers, though their draining also spread corruption.
Seeking to extend their lives, Arcanis created the Malverand heart from his attempts to produce healing magic. Michael tested the first heart, and the guardians subsequently received their own. The hearts continuously repaired their bodies, but feeding them weakened their magic. Arcanis then developed god cores to provide greater power. Thousands of mages contributed essence and the will to heal to his first completed core, a golden tree. The being it produced later became Hrzai.
He supplied cores to the guardians and made the spiral shard for Barachiel. When the emperor bonded with it above Morozkaya, it drained millions of inhabitants and devastated the peninsula. Arcanis still considered the experiment successful because Barachiel could now remove corruption. At Barachiel's request, he also made the core that would allow Isandriel to destroy gods and guardians who became dangerous. Barachiel created Isandriel as an infant and bonded him with it.
He also designed cores intended to embed gods directly within their wielders, though these remained unresponsive during their early development.
Arcanis engineered the Malverand vault to block signals from the realm of essence. He also developed Malverine with Eremion and Aruviel. Barachiel enforced it across the empire.
Vireen and death
Eira became Arcanis's student and assistant. He studied her essence, body and magic, using her golden hair to strengthen the expedition ship's plating and her temporal magic to design gate schematics. He made gates that converted matter into essence and bent spacetime to connect distant locations.
Eira piloted the ship to Vireen. When its gate was activated, Michael and Eremion traveled there and returned safely, but Barachiel disappeared during his passage. His spiral shard emerged split in two, and the gates thereafter opened into the void. Arcanis organized an expedition to investigate, then disappeared himself.
He eventually reached Vireen after spending a long time navigating the void with air magic and a sight enhancer. The gate's damaged matter stabilization had left his body breaking apart. He recognized that Eira came from the future and entrusted Malverand's work to her before disintegrating. She kept his heart and the geometric core he had brought.
Relationships
- Barachiel: Barachiel gave Arcanis the support and mages needed for his research. Arcanis considered him his only friend until his years with Eira.
- Eira: Arcanis regarded her as his best student and was reluctant to send her to Vireen. He trusted her to continue his work after his death.
- Jareth: Jareth carried Arcanis's spirit, though his own inventions largely adapted or rediscovered earlier technology.

Arcanis engineered the Malverand vault to block signals from the realm of essence. Lothar proposed a common language, and Barachiel commissioned Arcanis to construct Malverine to encompass every possible concept. Arcanis developed it with Eremion and Eira, who lived in the past as Aruviel. Barachiel enforced it across the empire.
