History
The Green Emperor's invasions
Shaoying belonged to an alliance with Linsothar and Hengvaris against the shapers of Shroudvale, but the Green Emperor pursued expansion into neighboring lands. He ordered his army to seize Cloudrift and force Thundermarch to submit. Garrik, accompanied by his mentor Astrid, served in the invading army to reach Tianlei and question him about Malverand and Eremion.
The army looted towns and villages during its march. Fighting outside Cloudrift continued for weeks as Shaoying sent reinforcements. The emperor's guards drained essence from the land and their own soldiers, killing people and leaving the fields barren. By the time the invaders reached the city's outskirts, their ten thousand soldiers faced only a few hundred defenders.
Ren Wuye, Tianlei's wielder, fought alongside Isaac and Simon to repel them. Ren's lightning shattered the invaders' cosmic and divine barriers, killing hundreds. Isaac disintegrated attackers and their spells, while Simon summoned meteors that crackled with lightning. Shaoying's invasion was defeated. Garrik and Astrid withdrew from the fighting and left with Isaac and Simon.
Decades later, Ren had stopped fighting, encouraging the Green Emperor to attempt another invasion. Garrik and Astrid marched to defend Thundermarch with more than a thousand mages. They met Khoradyn's army on the way to Cloudrift, and the two forces united.
Before their first battle together, Khoradyn offered the approaching invaders their lives in exchange for joining his ranks. They attacked him instead. Garrik shielded and healed his troops as the united army defeated the Shaoying force. Many invaders fled or died, while those who surrendered were accepted into Khoradyn's army. Garrik subsequently gave him command and remained his second in command.
