Overview
The Battle of Valalav is the ambush around the destroyed site of Arcanis Village after Varnhallow collapses. Azarion, Eliona, Raphael, Alistair, and their allies use the injured survivors as bait for Thalena. Valalav becomes the nearby city threatened by aftershocks, broken ground, inland waves from the Navan Sea, and Raphael's ice.
Battle
Thalena reaches Arcanis Village from Rimvold after Varnhallow breaks and Azarion, Eliona, Raphael, Alistair, and their allies attack Deylin's group. The area has already been devastated: craters, lava, fire, ruined trees, drained land, and water pulled inland from the Navan Sea mark the site where the village once stood. Zhang, Anshar, Lysander, and Deylin survive with critical injuries. Thalena enters the battlefield to rescue them under fire.
Azarion attacks from concealment with immense air-and-divine blasts. Eliona hides him through illusion magic. Azarion is Eremion's former second-in-command, and Eliona is the temporal mage who breaks Varnhallow. Thalena saves Zhang and Anshar, then reaches Deylin and releases an hourglass-shaped abyss-like origin spell that freezes essence-based things in black and white.
Eliona fires a red corruptor projectile from a compact spellblaster-like weapon. The projectile pierces the frozen spell, breaks it, and leaves red lines spreading through Thalena's body and shields. With Azarion continuing to hammer her position, Thalena steals a second small cylinder from Eliona and crushes it, sending herself and Deylin into the void.
Virel, Sigurd, Thorik, and Lythariel arrive after Thalena disappears. Virel uses vector magic to turn one of Azarion's blasts back against him, then survives the shift to close combat when Thorik's lightning knocks Azarion off course and Lythariel's darkness barrier blocks another blast. Eliona's red projectile fails against Lythariel's darkness barrier, and Azarion and Eliona retreat.
Raphael's ice attack across the Arcanis Village battlefield follows Azarion and Eliona's retreat. A vast wall of ice advances across the battlefield, freezing fire, lava, air, ground, and waves from the Navan Sea. Aldar arrives on Glin with Ilyra and Tazarin. Ilyra saves fallen Haverloch mages. Tazarin redirects waves; Aldar uses the spiral shard to raise a massive wall of fire, and Virel redirects an ice shard aimed at him. The ice wall shatters, and Raphael disappears.
Aftermath
Much of Valalav remains standing. Its roads are washed away or broken, its trees are knocked out of alignment, and its ground is fissured. Haverloch mages protect survivors and hold back the remaining waves. Virel brings Aldar into the city center to recover.
The Battle of Valalav removes Thalena and Deylin from the immediate effort to stop Raphael, Azarion, Eliona, Alistair, and their allies, exposes Eliona's red spellblaster projectiles as a weapon against Thalena's abyss-like magic, and forces Haverloch, Xalmyrra, Thalassai, Skarnheim, and surviving Order allies into closer cooperation. Alistair also fights Simon's Haverloch group near Varnhallow alongside Rahmavir chosen and members of his organization, including Severin, Doss, and Boss, before the attackers withdraw.
